Mao - a manga series written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi - has recently released an English version through Viz Media. Takahashi is known for having created one of the most popular manga turned anime series of all time - Inuyasha.

Mao tells the story of an exorcist named Mao who meets a girl named Nanoka, who mysteriously traveled through a portal and was transported to the Taishō period. Much like Inuyasha, the manga explores themes of the supernatural, as the duo investigates murders that occur in a ghost-inhabited village.

Takahashi seems to be very busy as of late, as the artist recently oversaw the production of the Beads of Subjugation - the necklace worn by Inuyasha throughout the series that makes him sit like a dog whenever Kagome yells, “Osuwari!” - or “Sit!” in the English dub.

Mao was originally released over two years ago - in May of 2019 - as part of Weekly Shōnen Sunday in Shogakukan, a well known Japanese publication. Since then, rumors have been circulating that the series will be getting an anime adaption soon. If so, it wouldn’t be the only manga getting the animated treatment as of late, as it was recently announced that the sequel series, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, will be getting an anime series. A teaser trailer was recently released through an announment by the manga’s illustrator - Atsuo Ueda - on their official Twitter page.

If you are an Inuyasha fan, you’re going to have to get your fix of the half-demon somewhere other than Netflix. As a lot of Inuyasha movies - as well as one about the future hokage, Naruto Uzamaki - were removed from the streaming platform earlier this month.
