Bungie has announced its first new game in almost six years. At tonight's PlayStation Showcase, Bungie revealed Marathon with a psychedelic trailer showcasing a very different form of cyberpunk dystopia.

We're not sure yet if Marathon could be considered a reboot or a remake. According to Bungie's new site, Marathon will be an extraction shooter where players "compete for survival, riches, and renown in a world of evolving, persistent zones, where any run can lead to greatness." Instead of a security officer, players take the role of a "runner", searching strange signals for "mysterious artifacts", "long dormant AI, and "troves of untold riches."

The original Marathon, released for the Macintosh computer back in 1994, was one of Bungie's earliest successes. An early first-person shooter that was compared favorably to Doom, Marathon placed players aboard the UESC Marathon, a colony ship construction out of the Martian moon Deimos. Marathon was intended to head to the Tau Ceti system to begin colonization of the system's fourth planet, but as is so often the case, aliens invade and start killing the colonists.

The player in the original Marathon is definitely a human, but there didn't seem to be any humans to be found in tonight's trailer. Robotic caterpillars, android soldiers, and colorful AIs appear to be the main characters. In the original game, three AI computers controlled Marathon, and it appears they'll be a major component of the new game too.

It's been known for a while that Bungie has several games currently in development. This is the first time we've heard of a Marathon remake, which could be the rumored third-person action game or the multiplayer PvP action title with esports aspirations. The exceptionally bright colors would certainly make it easy to differentiate between squads, although very little of the original Marathon seemed to lend itself to team-based combat. There's also a rumored fantasy game and an entirely new IP beyond the Destiny universe.

Marathon will be for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, with full cross-play and cross-save. We don't have a release date, but you can sign up for notifications on Marathon's website.
