Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is now officially the best-selling Mario Kart game ever. Eat Deluxe 8's dust, Mario Kart Wii.

For the most part, a game's sales will spike when it launches or right after. Its sales will then drop off significantly. There are exceptions to that rule, and most of them are Nintendo games. You only have to check out the UK boxed chart each week for proof of that. Games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Super Mario Odyssey are almost always in the top ten, years after they launched.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also one of those games, often breaking the top three in the weekly chart. The game continues to perform so well that it is now officially the best-selling Mario Kart game of all time. That's according to Nintendo's latest financial report which revealed Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 3.34 million copies in the last three months alone.

Those additional sales bring Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's running total to 38.74 million copies sold. Before now, Mario Kart Wii has held the title of best-selling Mario Kart game for a number of years, shifting 37.38 million copies. That record has now been broken and there's no telling when the new number will stop rising. As highlighted above, the latest Mario Kart game's sales are anything but slow right now.

There was actually a little ambiguity surrounding the record holder before this latest confirmation. Since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is technically a jazzed-up Switch port of Mario Kart 8, some have combined the sales of the two. If you fall into that camp, then Mario Kart Wii's record was broken a while ago. Now Mario Kart 8 Deluxe stands alone since Mario Kart 8's sales were very low for a game in the series due to it being on the Wii U.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe holds a few records at this point. It remains the best-selling game on Nintendo Switch, and is also the best-selling racing game in US history. Its continued success also probably means there isn't going to be a Mario Kart 9 any time soon. Much like Rockstar is with GTA 5, which has now sold 155 million copies, Nintendo won't want to replace a game that is still selling as well as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
