Any Mario Kart Tour racer is familiar with the many different items that can be used to take out opponents in a race to get past them on a course. But what some people may not know is that there is a stealthier (and less violent) way to speed past opponents and get the lead in the race—slipstreaming

Slipstreaming is a driving technique used throughout the Mario Kart series. Also known as "drafting", this tactic involves driving directly behind another racer (or, as it's called in the real world, "tailgating") and following them for an extended period. If the player tailgates another racer long enough, they will receive a speed boost giving them a chance to pass the player on the course.

In Mario Kart Tour, this is a simple method to use that involves minimal control usage, and just requires the player to drag their finger to direct them behind another player's kart. The longer a player drives behind the racer, the stronger your slipstream will be and the easier it'll be for you to pass other drivers on a course.

Players can get a sense of how strong their slipstream will be by watching their kart while driving behind other players, as a faint white and smoke-like ring will appear around your driver, building in intensity and size as their slipstream gains momentum. Upon activating the slipstream, white lines will appear in place of the white ring, to indicate a player's significant increase in speed.

Slipstreaming can be tricky to do in a course with a lot of twists and turns, so it's recommended to perform this maneuver in straight-line tracks. It's still doable on sharp turns, but it might be more difficult to keep directly behind another player while turning.

Beyond just using slipstreaming to increase their speed, players can use this to their advantage to take out other players. For additional damage, players can use this extra boost of speed to ram into the player they are slipstreaming and momentarily knock them off of their path. To do this, players should not try to move out of their position behind another racer when slipstreaming. Instead, players should simply stay in place and let the slipstream activate while the other racer is still in front of them. The increase in speed will cause the player to zip past their opponent and cause them to take some damage.

When driving behind another player, be mindful of whether or not they're carrying an object, and, if they are, what object they're carrying. If a player is driving behind an opponent and they have a particularly useful item (such as a red shell), they could use the player's slipstreaming attempt to their advantage and easily take down the driver.

Players can also chain slipstreams by quickly moving behind different racers. Chaining slipstreams won't cause a player to move any faster, but it will keep the slipstream boost going for longer.

Slipstreaming is a simple racing tactic that can amount to significant benefits in a race. With these tricks and tips in mind, it should be easy for anyone to use slipstreaming in a race to speed their way to first place.
