It is without any surprise that Mario is considered as the most iconic video game characters of all time. From playing the knight in blue overalls to an accomplished athlete, the red plumber is a real example of versatility. On the other hand, his brother Luigi is far from Mario's stardom. NPC only seem to recognize him as Mario's sidekick, and they always seem to forget his name. However, people often remember that he saved Mario, a few times in the Luigi's Mansion series and that he mainly assisted his brother in numerous titles. It is in this light that we've decided to take a look at 25 Hilarious Mario Vs. Luigi Memes That Make Fans Choose.

Though most of the casual fans would choose Mario over Luigi, each of the brothers has their strengths and weaknesses. Though we doubt that we'll be able to bring you to the other side of the fence, the article aims to highlight the inconsistencies of both Bros. If you've only played the mainstream Mario games, like Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 64, not only will you be able to understand most of the entries, but you'll also be acquainted with new titles. As always, please feel free to comment and share the article. Sit back, get your glasses ready and lets-a-go (Mario's voice).

25 Unwanted Guest

via: ebaumsworld.com

Back in high school, I was the unpopular guy that somehow managed to befriend the "cool" kids. While it had its advantages, I still felt unwanted by certain people whenever I was going to events; my situation was the same as Luigi's. Living under his brother's shadow, Luigi often serves as a punching bag to the non-playable characters. Although Luigi proves to be as efficient as Mario, NPCs usually qualify him as a useless character. This infamous meme is a perfect example of Luigi's status. As the Bros. arrive in the castle, they are greeted by a Toad, who seems to be happy to see Mario.

When the mushroom-headed little guy sees Luigi, he doesn't seem to be as excited and barely notices him.

For an explanation, it looks like Luigi is only tolerated in the castle because he's with Mario, the Mushroom Kingdom savior. Since the red plumber is a respected figure in the castle, they seem to give him a free pass. However, we sincerely doubt that he'd have enjoyed this privilege, should he have been alone. Oh, and for those interested, you will find this moment in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, a funny and exciting RPG.

24 Luigi Because You Were Forced To

via: :themetapicture.com

If you were born in the 80s, chances are that you've already played Super Mario Bros on the original NES. Sure, the game is available on literally every possible Nintendo platform now. However, Generation Z players will never get to experience the same thrill of enjoying this classic as we did. In 2-Player Mode, each player gets to control the Bros. consecutively to finish the levels. Though my childhood friends were more into sports, my main gaming player proved to be (and still is) my little brother. One of the unspoken video game codes of conduct is that guests or younger siblings get to play with the second controller, for multiplayer.

The artist highlighted the fact that Luigi was the constant figure that younger siblings had to associate themselves when playing Super Mario Bros.

At the time, Mario & Luigi were identical and didn't have any unique features. As time advanced, the characters were given personality traits that defined them. While Mario was the hero, Luigi always seems to be the coward sibling that would run away if the occasion was provided. In real life, the 1P-2P situation shows that your older brother (Player 1) is the leader of any given situation, whereas your (Player 2) just a mere sidekick. Poor you.

23 Run For It!

via: memegenerator.net

Although Mario's athletic performance is of an Olympic athlete, his physical appearance tends to show otherwise. His chubby body and mature look make him seem as if he's an inactive middle-aged man. However, Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that Mario is 24 even though the Super Mario franchise has been alive for more than 30 years. Though Luigi is always considered as a second option, his physical looks would mark him as the most performing hero, instead.

The comic strip is generously illustrating Luigi's superiority over Mario; while the Red brother is struggling to catch a Star Rabbit, (a species that appears in the Super Mario Galaxy series), Luigi seems to have no problem finding the animal. The meme is a direct reference to the SMG series. In the games, the Green Mario can be played as an unlockable character, if specific requirements are met. His main advantage is his speed, as he's significantly faster than his older brother. The Galaxy series would not be the first time that Mario & Luigi compete to chase rabbits. In Super Mario 64 DS, released in 2004, players must also capture fast bunnies to unlock mini-games. Again, Luigi is proven to be faster than Mario!

22 Like It Never Happened

via: imgflip.com

Back in 2013, Nintendo officially dubbed the year as "The Year of Luigi," in celebration of Luigi's 30th anniversary. Although the year saw the release of many Luigi-exclusive titles, the reception was mixed as most of the games were existing games only remade with Luigi as the main character (New Super Luigi U & Dr. Luigi). Additionally, the affected games released during the ill-fated Wii U cycle, which ultimately changed the popularity of the games. The meme is a simple-yet hilarious consequence of the failed marketing campaign. In the image, we see several Wii Remote displayed on their shelf. The controllers seem to be sold at the suggested retail price, except for Luigi's. It is important to cite that Luigi's Wiimote is an accessory that was released for the year of Luigi.

Not only is the accessory on sale, but it's also on clearance sale, meaning that the store wants to get rid of the inventory.

On top of it, the Mario special-edition Wiimote is right beside Luigi with the full price tag. How disrespectful can it be when both of the controllers act the same? Given the Nintendo Switch success, maybe Nintendo should think about establishing a new year for Luigi. Regardless, we would still purchase the Luigi Wiimote because of its price tag. Would you? We won't judge you if you were to say no. Ok, maybe a bit.

21 From Wario-Day To Mario-Day

via: shencomix.com

Despite being second to Mario, Luigi is still considered one of the most recognizable characters in the Mario universe. Sure, Luigi may never rival his brother in popularity, but the Green Mario nonetheless have some success of his own, partially thanks to his Luigi's Mansion series. Except for party-themed series like Mario Kart and Mario Party, other iconic characters are often cast to tertiary roles. Shencomix shows an interpretation of Luigi's popularity with his comic strip.

In it, the author is comparing Luigi to Thursday. The author explains that although he is not as famous as Friday (Mario), he's more popular than Monday (Wario) and Tuesday (Waluigi). Sure, the author mostly meant that these two days represent the brutal return to work after a relaxing weekend, but Wario & Waluigi are genuinely less popular than Luigi. As for Wednesday (Toad), he is shown to be the average day with no significant plus or minus. It seems to perfectly represent the Mushroom Kingdom residents as they are part of most of the Super Mario titles with no weighty roles. In the end, it is pleasant to see an illustration that credits Luigi's role, compared to the many other arts that mock him.

20 The Record States It

via: coloringsquared.com

When we look at the numerous titles that Mario featured in throughout his career, we can't help but wonder how Nintendo managed to get all of these ideas. I mean the guy has been featured in racing games, party games, and even educational games (we don't advise you to try them, though). While the plumber's resume is quite impressive, we wouldn't be able to say much about Luigi. Yes, he's mostly featured in titles that include his brother, but most of his parts are significantly downplayed. It is one of the reasons why Mario is preferred over its brother. The meme is offering an obvious answer to the siblings' popularity poll.

The image is displaying most of the numerous sports that Mario has done over its career.

The author then compares it to Luigi's resume which only includes his Luigi's Mansion and Baby Luigi roles. Although the artist asks us which brother is cooler, he is influencing the reader to choose the red plumber, thanks to its vast functions. On a personal level, I find that the meme is biased as Luigi was also present in all of Mario's sports titles. It would have been more representative for the author to include pictures of Luigi. Also, Mario & Luigi's game style is similar to Ryu & Ken, from the Street Fighter series; while they play similarly, both characters have their strength and weaknesses.

19 Don't Mess With Luigi, Mario

via: BlowTheCartridge (Cameron Davis)

Though Mario Kart: Double Dash had an exciting co-op concept—in which a character would drive while the other one would provide offensive assistance, the title is often considered to be one of the least popular of the series. Even so, I had fun playing the game, as it allowed my brother and I to partner up instead of competing against each other (I love my co-op games). However, it may be frustrating whenever you're on driving duty as the success of your team is directly affected by your performance. Often, it may be the cause of tension between teammates whenever you land second or lower. Author Cameron Davis is demonstrating this reality with its comic strip.

In the panels, Luigi is continuously shown criticizing Mario's driving skills. The latter thinks about how he dislikes backseat drivers, alluding that he prefers the single cart format. I love the strip because it shows a positive side of Luigi. While he is often cast as a frightened, low self-esteemed plumber, the Green Mario is shown to have some leadership qualities. Furthermore, I enjoy seeing Mario being at the receiving end of Luigi's wrath. Great job, Davis!

18 Blood Is Everything But Thicker Than Water

via: memegenerator.net

There is one thing I don't seem to understand with Mario Kart: how is everybody able to race together given the history that certain characters have? Fact, it's only a video game, but would it be appropriate that you were to race alongside your nemesis who tried to steal your love interest, on many occasions (I see you, Mario)? Regardless, it seems that the racing series appears to be a sort of truce between heroes and villains. However, it still looks very bizarre that a character would target its aggression towards the person that's directly in front of them, instead of their official enemies. The meme is perfectly disclosing this flawed logic.

In the picture, we see Mario readying his fireball item. The reader is led to believe that Luigi stands in front of his brother. Given their sibling relationship, It would be unthinkable that Mario would harm his brother. However, the caption indicates that Mario replied to Luigi's pleas by saying that he doesn't have any brothers. In other words, the red plumber is ready to attack anyone on sight merely to win a single race cup. How ridiculous can it be? I know, it's only a video game, but come on Mario.; you can't go ham on your brother like that, brother!

17 Only Worth A Kiss?

via: gabasonian.deviantart.com

Veteran players may surely remember the Super Mario 64 ending. After spending countless hours traveling through paintings and besting Bowser, Princess Peach only treats you with a kiss and a cake. Pretty lame from someone who rules all over the Mushroom Kingdom. The DS remake of Super Mario 64 offers many elements to the game, such as the inclusion of new playable characters (Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi) and multiplayer content. Despite these additions, Nintendo omitted to change the ending and instead opted to integrate the three characters onto the scene with no significant role. Gabasonian shows another perspective from this particular moment.

Even though all of the players have contributed to saving Peach, Mario is the only one that ends up getting kissed on the nose.

The strip reveals the dissatisfaction of some characters: Luigi wished he was the one getting kissed while Wario is complaining about not receiving any money. As for Yoshi, he doesn't seem to mind and only repeats his name. Gabasonian successfully highlighted the usual motivation behind the players that have been shown throughout the numerous games of the series. We hope the protagonists will think twice before saving Princess Peach now; especially after such a lousy gift.

16 Hipster Luigi

via: idrawcartoons.tumblr.com

As previously explored onto the list, Mario has always been cast as the first playable character in the majority of its game series. Given his popularity, we doubt Nintendo would change its winning formula anytime soon. Because Luigi is a less famous character than Mario, the second player position is often synonymous with failure. But what if we forget about this social stigma and evaluate the core of being a second player? After all, it's nothing more than a digital tag to differentiate players. If we take a look at fighting games like Street Fighter or Tekken, it only shows you which side of the screen your character will be. It is this train of thought that Samuel Milham wanted to manifest in the above art piece.

The image features a hipster-looking Luigi with the "Player One is too mainstream" caption. Hipsters are traditionally known to be anti-conformist and creative people that are unfazed by materialistic values. They often question the social norm and love to express themselves through different media. The Hipster Luigi seems to embody everything that has been said in these last sentences; he is redefining the second player option as being the new cool. If only hipsters were able to do something for the Toads, now... If there is one population that would need to get re-explored, it would be them!

15 Mario! Mario! Mario!. Can't You See?

via: pinterest.com

Mario always seems to be the man of the day as he always succeeds in rescuing her. One of the most famous theories is that Princess Peach voluntarily lets herself captured by Bowser. Although a bit far-fetched, this hypothesis also holds some substance. If you think about it, why would the Princess always get captured every time? After being stolen more than a dozen of times, wouldn't you learn how not to get caught? I'm sure seasoned players remember when Bowser Jr called Princess Peach his "mama," in Super Mario Sunshine. Though it is later proven to be false, the sentence still raised eyebrows amongst fans of the series. It is that theory that Otis wants to explore in his comic strip.

In the panels, Mario is led to believe that he must rescue the Princess from Bowser, but the truth is that she was getting satisfied by him. The artist also proposes that the King Koopa is a human in disguise. If that's the case, then it eliminates many questions about how they'd be having grown-up fun. I also love how the artist drew the brothers. They seem a bit aged and depressed from all these rescuing missions. We sure hope Mario doesn't know the truth.

14 You Can Blame It On The Stars, Not The Heart

via: superluigibros.com

The Super Star is a signature item of the Super Mario series that allows its bearer to be temporally invincible to enemies hits. Ever since its inclusion in the original Super Mario Bros. game, the Stars have also appeared in the form of divine characters, throughout the titles. For instance, the Paper Mario series features different portrayals of Stars that are crucial to Mario's main quests, once rescued. Despite being powerful, even Stars have their limit: they may allow you to complete the game faster, but they'll never be a factor of the pre-rendered ending scene. It is what fansite Super Luigi Bros tried to illustrate with its comic.

In the strip, Toadsworth hands a Star to Mario. The plumber heads to Luigi to impress him, but the latter is enjoying a slice of cake with Princess Peach. Saddened by the discovery, Mario returns to Toadsworth with a heavy heart. Whether Luigi had evil intentions or not is a subject of debate for another time, but the panels demonstrate that Mario lacks self-esteem. To explain, Mario needs to validate himself with the need of power-ups whereas Luigi doesn't require so. He's able to shut down Mario by simply being himself. Next time you want to impress your attractive neighbor, make sure to think like Luigi and to be yourself!

13 Not Even Trying!

via: loltribe.com

If you were born in the mid-80s, you have probably seen the TV series adaptations of the few leading Nintendo game series. The most famous series, the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, featured a live version of Mario & Luigi (portrayed by famed wrestler Lou Albano and Canadian actor Danny Wells, respectively) in a first segment of the show. The second segment would feature an animated adventure of the Bros. While the show was better than the 1993 Super Mario Bros movie, we still wouldn't call it a masterpiece. While the show tried its best to be on par with the video game series, there were still significant flaws that would irk even the most casual fans. This meme revisits one of the unintelligible moment of the TV series. In the sixteenth episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, Mario & Luigi must rescue Princess Peach who got captured by Bowser after he raided the party's ship. The Bros manage to infiltrate the King Koopa's fortress disguised as pirates. Mario instructs his brother that they need to act tough to maintain their cover.

Instead, Luigi almost blows their cover when he asks for a glass of milk.

Now, we all know that Luigi is usually not the brain of operations, but there are some limits to how dumb he can be. For more clumsy scenes, we highly suggest you buy the DVD. Oh, and don't be surprised about Toad's head. You'll understand when you'll look at the episode.

12 Exaggerating Has A Price!

via: gabasonian.deviantart.com

Following the success of Luigi's Mansion, Nintendo released its sequel Luigi Mansion: Dark Moon, back in 2013. While most of Nintendo's released games are Mario-labeled, it still felt good to see the lesser-popular brother again as the main character. After all, having a standalone series when you're a second-rate character is quite a remarkable feat. Usually, these type of games end up being cult classics amongst fan. Because of it, gamers tend to undermine mainstream titles and compare it with the underdog classic. In his simple image, Gabasonian shows what happens when a character gets too proud of himself and other popular characters must level him down. In it, Luigi is excited to have the Luigi Mansion coming up. However, the green plumber gets a bit too excited after the announcement.

Thus, the present characters diminish the importance of Luigi's series by highlighting some of their milestones.

What Gabasonian overlooked in his profile is the platform in which Dark Moon would release. While the first Luigi Mansion would release on the Nintendo Gamecube, the follow-up would instead come out in the Nintendo 3DS. It is a major downgrade, knowing that the series passed from a major platform to a handheld console. Oh, and if you take a look at the back of the picture, you'll notice Yoshi and Wario eavesdropping on the conversation. I wonder what would be their accomplishments, should they have joined the discussion.

11 Mario & Green Mario

via: safelyendangered.com

Despite being acquainted with Mario & Luigi, there is no information about the Bros. parents. The only thing we saw about them is a glimpse of the sibling's father in Super Mario Issun-Boshi, a Japanese anime movie released in 1989. With Mario being the main face of Nintendo, we wonder if he had preferential treatment from his parents. It might have been possible, given how Mario has an outspoken personality, compared to the more reserved Luigi. Comic artist Safely Endangered is exploring this possible fact in his comic strip.

In it, we see Mama Mario greeting her two sons. While she remembers her most famous son, she struggles to remember her youngest son's name. As Luigi inquires about the situation, his mom apologizes by calling him "Green Mario." The nickname is being used by many other characters that forget about the younger brother. I get the fact that NPCs may not know about Luigi; after all, he doesn't have his brother's stardom. However, how can a mother forget about her offspring? We certainly don't envy Luigi during family reunions!

10 No Green In The Odyssey

via: double-xp.com

Super Mario Odyssey released to widespread critical acclaim and mostly followed its traditional recipe. A courageous Mario? Check. A damsel-in-distress captured by a threatening Bowser? Check. Annoying Toads that mainly serve as comic-reliefs? Check. Despite that, one major character was missing in the adventure: Luigi. Sure, Mario's brother would later appear in a DLC of the game, but he would only appear as an NPC with no significant impact on the story. Josh Crandall & M.S Corley from Double XP—a video game flavored comic blog— shows a fictive version of the development of the game.

As Mario & Peach speak about the making of Super Mario Odyssey, the princess remembers that she forgot to alert Luigi about the game.

The next image shows a freshly awaken Luigi looking for the couple. On a personal level, I'm a bit disappointed at Nintendo for not correctly including Luigi in the game. Given his status as Mario's brother, it is a bit of an insult that he is given the same importance as less popular characters like Captain Toad and the Koopa Bros. Even Pauline, in which we haven't seen since the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong, had a more prominent role than the Green Mario. Get your priorities straight, Nintendo!

9 Platinum Worth, Ranked Silver

via: memegenerator.ne

This is something that we've covered in a few entries already. Since Super Mario Bros 2, Luigi can jump higher than his brother. In platforming games like Super Mario series, it is a significant advantage, as it allows you to land more efficiently at places. While speed and strength are important elements in video games, they aren't as valuable as the hop since most enemies don't require much to be defeated. In fact, most foes need a simple step in the head.

Despite that, it doesn't seem like Luigi is getting the praise he deserves.

Thus, the meme represents the injustice that the green plumber is facing. Why would Luigi be second when he's more useful than his brother? It's a bit of an insult, in my opinion. When you take a look at every modern Super Mario game, Luigi only appears in a few of them. Even when present, he's mostly cast as a bonus character that doesn't affect much of the initial plot. I wonder if Nintendo would be able to acknowledge the green plumber a bit more than now. It would be nice to see further Luigi games instead of Luigi-flavored remade versions of original games. Just saying, Nintendo.

8 Long Live Luigi

via: funny.co (WarlordCringe)

Except for the Luigi's Mansion series and The Subspace Emissary portion of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, there wasn't much occasion when Luigi rescued Mario. Thus, it always undermines Luigi's status as a serious character. That's too bad because Luigi is even stronger than his brother. In many video games and film plots, we've seen a load of characters defect to the enemy's side because of their jealousy over the protagonist. While it adds some juice to the initial story, the relationship between the two characters is often irreparable. This is what WarlordCringe is exploring, in the above comic panel.

As Mario is hanging on the ledge, Luigi then pushed Mario to his demise. The third square shows Mario's final instant before joining the Cheep Cheeps, in the river. The "Long Live The King" quote is a reference to the Middle Age proclamation when a new king is coronating, following the death of his predecessor (and also a reference to The Lion King). It refers to Luigi's new status following the premeditated disappearance of his brother, in the strip. Though we know Luigi is comfortable with being the runner-up character of the series, it is still something that we can't help but think about, also.

7 Be Without You

via: imgflip.com

Let's be real Nintendo fanboys, no matter how you love the likes of Kirby, Donkey Kong, or Samus Aran, Nintendo's cash motor is the iconic Mario Bros. Sure, there s Pokémon and The Legend of Zelda series, but it just wouldn't be the same if Mario weren't present. The same could be said about the Super Mario series. While there are characters that prove to be more popular than some Nintendo flagship series, Mario's absence would have dealt some substantial damage to the series. Could you imagine Luigi being the new face of Nintendo? We doubt so. The meme brings a reality that can be said about both brothers.

The image depicts a depressed Luigi that is saddened by his brother's loss.

The picture plays well with the caption as it describes the importance that the green plumber have for his brother. In a more realistic perspective, the meme explains that Mario's disappearance would also mean Luigi's downfall since the former is the pillar of the series. Trivia fact, the picture was initially supposed to be the Game Over screen from Luigi's Mansion. It was later changed due to its scary nature. On a personal level, I can understand Luigi losing his money mak—, I mean brother!

6 200CC No!

via: jesseoldershaw.tumblr.com

If there's one thing I regret about my childhood is that I rented Mario Kart 64 over 40 times at my local Blockbuster video store. Yes, the game was addictive, but I would've been able to buy it, should I have saved my weekly five dollars allowance for three months. Despite that, Mario Kart 64 brought so many joys and tears that it forever holds a place in my heart. The 150cc represented the most difficult mode in the game, where players had to use everything to their advantage to arrive first in the race. When the 200cc mode was introduced in Mario Kart 8, players were mainly challenged by the speed of the game as it required total mastery of their cart and courses. JesseOlderShaw humorously describes the first day of Mario Kart players experiencing the 200cc.

In the strip, we see Luigi announcing the challenging mode to Mario. Visibly excited by this, Luigi undertakes the Mario Circuit course at the highest difficulty but is unable to control his car and crashes to his demise. The strip is an explicit representation of how players are continually hitting the sides in 200cc. In order not to share the same fate as Luigi, we recommend new challengers to drift when required and sometimes to let go of the acceleration button when on steep curves. Trust us; you'll thank us later!
