Avengers: Infinity War has become not only the blockbuster hit of the summer but most likely the hit of the year. Everyone has been anticipating its release for what feels like ages, and now that it's finally out, a lot of us are shocked, while some of us maybe are not, by Thanos' actions, especially at the end of the film.

Even if you saw it coming a million miles away, there is absolutely no argument over whether or not Thanos was incredibly cruel to the Avengers, as well as the universe as a whole. And while we may have always known a lot about Thanos going into Infinity War, including his undeniable cruelty, it still did not prepare us for all of the havoc he was going to wreak throughout the movie.

And maybe that is because not everyone is fully knowledgeable in everything about Thanos, including his incredible powers that seem to mostly stem from his genetics...as well as some other enhancements.

Well, for those of you who fall directly into that group, there is plenty to learn about Thanos, his powers, and the odd mechanics of his body.

If you've ever wondered why it is that he seems nearly indestructible in almost any fight against the world's most powerful superheroes, or why he looks the way he does, we have answers for you right here. So look no further, and start to take notes on everything about Thanos with the 25 Weird Facts Only Super Fans Knew About Thanos' Body.

25 An Unfortunate Genetic Mutation

via The Verge

It is never fair when you are the only unattractive member of your family, regardless of if you are highly likely to turn into an evil villain one day anyway. So when Thanos was born with Deviant Syndrome, it seemed to solidify the fact that he was doomed from there on out.

His mother was completely shocked and eventually went insane just from the sight of him - literally. He would actually visit his mother, Sui-San, in the asylum, even though she probably would have been just fine never seeing his face again.

Being the ugly duckling of the family certainly can wear on anyone’s psyche, so I’m positive it was no walk in the park for Thanos either. It is especially unfortunate since he was born in Titan, specifically in the underground city of the Eternals.

This means that he was the only one to look deformed in the whole city.

In fact, he’s the only individual to be affected by this deformity as far as we are aware.

With the purple hue of his skin, his “hide-like” texture of his skin and the odd bulkiness of him, in general, it’s no wonder he feels so insecure. But more on that later.

24 With The Snap Of His Fingers…

via Release MAMA

Both in the Infinity Gauntlet as well as Avengers: Infinity War, we have seen just how powerful a snap of someone’s fingers can truly be. Well, at least we can see that in the case of Thanos, but he is far more powerful than the average human being. Especially now that he wields the Infinity Gauntlet.

In the comics, Thanos literally makes half of the population on Earth disappear with just a snap of his fingers, after a falling out of sorts with Lady Death. The “psychic emanations” that came from him took out “a quarter of the galaxy,” as a matter of fact.

This is a pretty intense power for anyone to have, but especially someone such as Thanos. Even before we all finally saw Infinity War, we were concerned the moment Thanos threatened in a tv spot for the film that he would snap his fingers and “cause chaos to half of the world.”

Of course, we all know that *spoiler alert* that circumstance turned out to actually happen in the movie as well, much to all our dismay. It would have been an impressive power, had he not disappointed us all by having a large number of the universe just erased from existence. Especially since that included a good portion of the Avengers.

23 Possessing The Power Of Infinity Stones

via CBR

The Infinity Stones were not always called that. First, they were known to be Soul Gems. And while Thanos may have not always wielded the Infinity Gauntlet, he didn’t necessarily need it either to possess them on his own.

As we all know, the Infinity Stones, or Soul Gems if you prefer, are so powerful that no mortal is able to even withstand one of them, let alone all of them at once. Even when we’re talking about the Marvel Cinematic Universe's version of them, and Guardians of the Galaxy, in particular, we saw the power stone literally “obliterate” anyone who touched it. The only reason Star-Lord was able to withstand it was due to the fact he is half-Celestial, which we learned in the second Guardians film.

So the fact that Thanos has been seen in the MCU not only having the stones in his possession but holding them before he places them into the Infinity Gauntlet, means that he is able to hold them with little to no harm coming to him. Sure, Thanos is probably the most powerful villain we have ever seen, but that is still quite the substantial ability if I ever did see one.

22 Weak Genetics

via Pinterest

Thanos is known to have fathered many, many children. But not a single one of them looked like him…at all. And there was a very specific reason for that disappointing circumstance he found himself in.

The problem goes back to his early days when he was just a young Titanian with a pretty big deformity going on. He decided, during a seriously violent episode, to off his mother. She ended up being his 18th victim. When he committed this heinous act, it was to “cut meaning from her flesh.” Ouch.

This meant, at least according to Thanos Rising, all of his future children would resemble their mothers completely while looking absolutely nothing like Thanos. He was known to have tried to “breed” with a substantial amount of alien races and did end up having many children, but not a one looked like their father.

The only one to even come close was Thane, but that was only after Black Bolt “initiates terrigenesis,” but even then, he only sort of looks like him at that point.

While Thanos may have caused the demise of most of his children in the end, all for Lady Death, anyways, that doesn’t make the fact that none of them looked anything like him an easy thing for him to swallow. Plus, tracking them down to end them must have been quite the difficult feat without having any basis of their looks to go off of.

21 Weighty Issues

via Vox

Thanos is not the best-looking individual, as we all know. But his disproportionate body is not only displeasing to the eye but is at times, downright baffling.

And while he may be better known for his unforgiving nature and evil plans he has for the world, and the galaxy as a whole, he’s also known for his odd and unpleasant looks. Honestly, if you have ever looked at a full-length image of him, whether it be from the comics or in the MCU, it is pretty alarming that he is able to move around comfortably in the frame that he has. The truly strange thing about his body is the fact that he’s 6’7” and yet he weighs a whopping 985 lbs (which we found out in Marvel Avengers: The Ultimate Character Guide #2). That is literally near a half a ton.

It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense that at 6’7” he weighs that great amount and isn’t toppling over.

How he’s even able to walk is beyond me.

Plus, the height alone is nothing that is out of the ordinary, especially when you think of athletes, so it’s hard to figure out why his looks alone can strike the fear into any other being. But maybe his gruesome personality is what does it for them.

20 Heightened Intelligence

via space.ca

Thanos has an incredible mind, so much so that he is regarded as one of the most brilliant beings in the galaxy. The Mad Titan is a “practiced scientist,” much like his father, and has done everything from DNA splicing to robot making, and everything else in between. So it’s no wonder he is known to be one of the smartest beings we’ve seen in the MCU thus far.

Even Bruce Banner, a.k.a The Hulk, is known to be one of the most intelligent men/ superheroes on planet Earth. But his brain is no match for Thanos’, as we learned in Thanos vs. Hulk. He said to Banner, “Your reputation as a genius appears well deserved. Unhappily for you, that is solely by Earth standard.”

That is a seriously bold statement to make about Mr. Banner, but he backs it up time and time again. Most people notice his brute-like appearance first and foremost, which is understandable, but he is so incredibly smart that it has benefitted his evil plans time and time again.

So since he is not only an extremely strong and powerful being but is also highly intelligent, that makes it a double whammy for literally anyone who comes up against him.

19 Stony Appearances

via Iron Age Productions

One of the most tumultuous relationships in the Marvel Universe has to be that of Thanos and Lady Death. Yes, the personification of demise is a lady, and Thanos fell madly in love with her.

She was the reason for much of Thanos’ nefarious schemes. Granted, most of what Thanos does is already evil in nature just because he wants to be…well, evil.

But she was largely responsible for everything that occurred after The Mad Titan met her. So when he had come up with a plan to basically “annihilate every living being in the universe” just for her, it would eventually become his undoing.

This is because, when he poured through mountains and mountains of research and found out about the “soul gems,” or Infinity Stones as we now know them, he eventually did obtain all five of them.

Lastly, he had to get the Soul Stone, which could actually steal souls. But it turns out that Adam Warlock had it in his possession, and he was the one to stop Thanos in his tracks with the help of Lord Chaos and Master Order, once his soul was released from the gem.

This meant that they turned Thanos’ entire being into stone in retaliation.

That’s what he gets.

18 A Silver Lining

via MensXP.com

There is something to be said for looking to put a positive spin on a generally bad situation. It is typically hard for anyone to do, let alone a power-hungry evil Eternal who wants to obliterate most of the universe's population. But in Thanos’ case, he just might want to, since this positive spin is on his Deviants Syndrome because it in actuality has a pretty great reason not to hate it so much.

The thing about his disease is that while it deforms his appearance greatly, it also gives him a lot of strength thanks to his “advanced bone structure.” I mean, he has been able to have punches thrown at him by the greatest heroes in the galaxy without looking remotely hurt.

He even took Thor’s hammer to his face which is truly insane when you think of the power behind it.

His strength in his skin and bones gives him a lot of powers in itself, seeing as he can not only withstand a serious beating from the strongest beings in the planets but also because he has near impenetrable skin, as we’ve seen countless times.

All of that comes in hand when you’re trying to decimate half of the galaxy.

17 A Love Curse

via Nerdist

There are plenty of reasons it is probably a terrible idea to become involved with demise, or Lady Death if you prefer. It is even worse when you become so blinded by love that it ultimately becomes your demise in the end.

So when a whole lot of drama started to occur between the two star-crossed lovers, things went haywire for Thanos pretty fast.

The first thing to go wrong for him was when the Silver Surfer came to him after he started to be plagued with visions of demise. Thanos was all too aware of why this would be happening. He knew this meant that Lady Death was looking to the Silver Surfer to be her new…companion of sorts.

So, of course, Thanos did what Thanos always does: he ended him. When he brought him to Lady Death in hopes she would “appreciate his offering” and then she definitely did not, it only got worse for him.

He decided to bring him back to life, which only served to make Lady Death even angrier. Ultimately, she decided to put a cruel curse on him which was the curse of immortality.

While this was technically temporary, it meant that he would never “feel Lady Death’s embrace.”

16 Survival Of The Fittest

via uk.businessinsider.com

We may already know that Thanos, for a time, was literally immortal. Meaning absolutely nothing and no one could end his life. But even before Lady Death put that curse on him, he was always an Eternal.

Because of this, it meant that he had incredible strengths and powers that all Eternals have, even if he became a pariah in his own world (Titan) due to his deformities. Included in this long list of powers he has is super-strength, advanced intelligence, and so on and so forth.

But what is truly fascinating is because he is that of an Eternal, he also has the ability to go prolonged periods of time without any food or water.

For humans, we cannot last more than roughly 21 days without either of those beyond important life sources. But Thanos can go unthinkable amounts of time without so much as a bite of food or a droplet of water.

I am sure he eventually has to partake in some sort of sustenance to make sure he doesn't get too weak, or worse, become ill in some way, which would only serve to take him away from his current twisted goal.

Even so, it's quite astounding he is able to go that long without any food or water, Eternal or not.

15 Moderations To His Physique

via crazzycomics.com

It is a widely known fact that Thanos is one of the strongest beings in the galaxy. There has been an insurmountable number of times where he was able to fight off a mighty “foe” of his with little to no effort.

But not all of those times were purely because of his own strength alone. The other reason behind his brute strength is the fact he decided to give himself the gift of bionic “improvements” to add to his already amazingly strong frame.

This meant that he was able to fight off some of the strongest and most powerful beings from here to Asgard.

For instance, he fought off the likes of Odin and his son, Thor, the God of Thunder.

In Thor’s case, he was even in possession of the Power Gem at the time (in Silver Surfer #88), and yet, Thanos was still able to fight him off due to his enhancements of bionic amplifications.

The fact that he was able to do not only that but fight off The Hulk with only the use of one of his hands is hard to wrap your head around. But at the same time, Thanos does always seem to have a new trick up his sleeve.

But that’s just Thanos for you.

14 A Harmed Mind

via The Fandomentals

While Thanos is one of the most brilliant beings we’ve ever come to know in the Marvel Universe, he also is not necessarily the most stable.

Some say that those with the most brilliant minds are also the most harmed, and that seems to be the case for The Mad Titan.

There is a problematic situation that has been confirmed by Lady Death herself which is that he can only see her due to his “psychosis,” which he then adamantly states to anyone who questions his sanity because of it. But furthermore, he blatantly shows signs of having an inferiority complex.

Of course, he probably isn’t even aware he has such a thing, seeing as that typically lies in the subconscious part of one’s mind. But it causes him to overcompensate quite frequently.

This all stems from his feelings of not measuring up, whether it be because of his family, or his twisted relationship with Lady Death, or the fact he was born with deformities, we’ll never know the true reason for it.

But it did result in him not only being one of the evilest beings in all the land but also in him wanting to cause utter destruction to all of the galaxy.

13 Having His Heart Ripped Out (Literally)

via Ultimate Comic Con

Drax the Destroyer has quite the long and sordid history with Thanos. They were doomed to be enemies the moment Thanos decided to end the lives of his family, which I am sure any of us could readily agree is the appropriate reaction when that happens.

From that moment on, it has been Drax’s mission in life to cause the demise of The Mad Titan, understandably so. And eventually, he did actually succeed in doing just that.

But let me go back and explain. When Thanos decided to play a much smaller role in Annihilus, it was because he wanted to see how a “new radical shift in the universe” would play out.

In the end, though, it seemed to all be for naught, since he learned that they would also be destroying the universe, including the Negative Zone. That meant his plan had backfired on him, once again, so after attempting to release Galactus, Drax showed up just in time to literally punch him straight through the chest, with Thanos’ heart in his hand.

So Drax finally got the revenge he had been craving for so long, thanks to Thanos’ poor decision making. Of course, the drama between the two did not end there, as is the case for most mortal enemies.

12 Addicted To Love

via Release MAMA

Speaking of hearts, it very hard to imagine that Thanos has one in the first place and is actually capable of loving someone other than himself. But he is capable of that, it seems. Because of that, I think it is safe to say that if Drax hadn’t ripped out Thanos’ heart, proving he does indeed have one, we would have eventually found that out just by seeing how much he desires to love and be loved in return.

This has been demonstrated time and time again. Whether it be because he has decided to do yet another disturbing thing to garner the attention of Lady Death, or it is because he craves the approval and love from his own family, we have seen that he is ultimately one of the loneliest villains we have ever seen in the Marvel Universe.

In Thanos Rising, he even said, “All I ever wanted was someone to love and love me back.”

When you truly think about him saying such a thing, it almost makes you feel bad for the guy. Almost.

But as quickly as you start to feel bad for The Mad Titan, you soon realize he brings a lot of his own misery on himself and is just an all-around evil dude in general.

11 Spine Removal

via Ultimate Comic Con

All throughout the many years that Thanos has been involved in storylines in the Marvel Universe, he has been through his fair share of trials and tribulations. But this one, in particular, is quite the doozy. The one I'm referring to is when Thanos had found himself in quite the predicament when the two Life Rafts that were used to save those from Earth-616 and 1610 brought him to Battleworld.

This was a planet that was entirely filled with “remnants of other realities” that were being controlled by none other than Doctor Doom. From that point on, things weren't looking good for Thanos.

That is because, unfortunately, this led to him being a victim of Doom’s wrath. It all started when he had been banished to the Deadlands. This place was the home of many “superpowered zombies,” you see. He decided after this point to convince the creature that made up the Shield to fight against Doom.

That was a huge mistake because when Thanos started to relish in his plans coming to fruition, Doom decided to take matters into his own hands, quite literally. He very quickly and effortlessly removed Thanos’ spine.

Needless to say, Thanos had royally messed up.

10 No Match For Thanos

via We Got This Covered

While Thanos was born an Eternal and has always had many outstanding powers, as well as a great intelligence that is unparalleled, he is not technically a god.

Even so, Thanos has long regarded himself as a god in his own right, regardless of the fact that he really isn't. That has a lot to do with the fact he has not only gone up against several other gods and defeated them, but because he “challenges the creators of all matter”.

This was only more apparent in his mind during Infinity Gauntlet. See, he was able to do many incredible things that no mortal would ever be able to do. This includes destroying planets that are literally being thrown at him by Celestials.

Even when Eon, Galactus, and the Stranger all joined forces together to combine energy, all Thanos has to do to thwart them was punch the matter directly into oblivion.

I can't think of anyone else who would be able to make it out of a fight quite like that.

So to think that he is able to go up against these beings with unthinkable power and not only survive, but most times, win the fight, is pretty outstanding.

9 Energy Absorption

via Comic Vine - Gamespot

Thanos clearly has quite the long list of strengths, powers, and abilities that seem never-ending at times, which we have touched on a few times already. And due to the fact that he not only is already powerful all on his own but also because he has several body enhancements, he has another ability that would make any foe cower.

And that is the ability to absorb energy and, in turn, emit it from all parts of his body.

Yes, you heard that right. Thanos can literally shoot energy out of his body, should the mood arise for him. This means that he has been able to take down many enemies using this power alone. In Infinity Gauntlet, for instance, he was able to take down Quasar by using his energy absorption to shoot cosmic energy out of his eyes and hands.

He has used this power of his over and over again all throughout the comics, including the time he defeated Galactus in the events of Annihilation.

This ability is quite handy for many reasons, including that he is able to heal his own wounds as well as anyone else who may be injured. Though, I can't exactly see him being selfless and stop to help heal someone without anything to gain for himself. But still - cool trick.

8 Universe Jumping

via The Verge

It seems to be extremely rare for The Mad Titan to be physically affected by well, anything really. No matter how dire the circumstances are that he finds himself in, he always manages to either find a way out of his own demise or just ends up being impervious to whatever could harm him. Or he is just able to fight whoever his opponent is in that moment, and typically will come out of it the victor.

It certainly is very neat, I’ll give him that. But it is even more interesting to me that after he literally jumps through different universes, yet he still is in perfect health.

In the Marvel Universe, there exists a multiverse within it, where basically there is always another version of someone out there in a different universe, who is taking similar but slightly different actions in slightly different scenarios.

So the fact that Thanos is not only able to jump universes while staying healthy but is also able to withstand an atmosphere such as the one in the Cancerverse with little to no effects, even with the "deformed creatures" and "desolate planets," is pretty darn unreal. Not to mention, impressive. I guess that's just how life goes for Thanos, though.

7 Telepathic Attacks

via Pinterest

There is no argument here that Thanos has one of the most brilliant minds in the Marvel Universe. We have discussed just how incredible his intelligence is, even going so far as to compare it to Bruce Banner, who is one of the most intelligent men on planet Earth.

But he has more to him than just being incredibly smart. Case in point: he also has some serious telepathic abilities that have helped on more than one occasion to assist in winning against his many enemies.

The Mad Titan is known for not only showing up in his enemies’ minds as a “projection” of sorts to manipulate or anger them, but he also has the abilities to read minds as well as perform psychic attacks.

And let’s not forget the fact that he has been seen performing mind lobotomies as well, as we saw in Avengers Annual #7. His appearance and reputation alone could strike fear into most men, but this added skill of his is especially frightening, I have to say.

Especially because there is no telling when, how, or why Thanos could show up in your mind, especially if you’re not on his good side at the moment.

6 The Summoning

via SYFY WIRE

Thanos and Lady Death’s twisted love affair is not something people can always wrap their heads around. Two of the evilest beings to ever exist, in love, yet ready to destroy the other at the drop of a hat? Alrighty then.

But because Lady Death was able to resurrect Thanos after Drax the Destroyer ended him, things got even more interesting, and even stranger, between the two mega-villains. That is mainly because Lady Death decided to make him immortal after resurrecting him, and they soon came up with an evil scheme.

They decided to head to the Cancerverse, where Life beat demise, to defeat Lord Mar-Vell. He was the “avatar of Life” in that specific universe. So when lord Mar-Vell ended up putting a sword through Thanos, thinking he ended his life, he was soon in for a rude awakening.

This summoned demise, who then took on Mar-Vell and sent him to his end, along with several other inhabitants.

Pretty much, this means should Thanos ever be in a tight spot, and wants to get Lady Death’s attention, all he has to do is perish and she will show right up.

I am positive that has been helpful for Thanos more times than he can count.
