Comic book movies are officially trending, much in part to what Marvel and Disney have brought to the table. Over the course of the last decade, with the release of 19 MCU films, Marvel has created something most never thought possible. This is especially true after how Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War performed at the box office. There’s no stopping the train now, as another 19-20 films are likely being planned out for the next decade. With all this praise, however, comes problems. Not every film can be perfect, but the chances of creating plot-holes, mistakes, and inconsistencies only increases when all those movies are shoved into one connecting universe.

Fandom is quick to give the MCU and Feige a pass on this because we’re simply enjoying seeing our childhood played out into live-action cinematography. But this shouldn’t be used as an excuse to not call out Marvel on their mistakes. Whether it be timeline issues or facts being misrepresented, creating an entire universe built around hundreds of characters who are all tied to the same story is inevitably going to create problems. For now, these issues are small, and most can even be considered petty. Avengers: Infinity War closed the door on several plot-holes from the past, but quickly opened a host of new windows and escape pods. Leading many to question whether it’s simply a fluke, or if this will become the standard for years to come. Only time will tell. Until then, let’s examine and break down several problems, plot-holes, and inconsistencies created through Avengers: Infinity War. This article has been written to be fun and thought-provoking. Please don't take any of these entries too seriously.

Spoilers ahead for those who have yet to see Avengers: Infinity War or any of the other 18 MCU films.

26 Gamora Soul Stone Connection

Via Twitter @jamiebearse
Marvel Gamora and Thanos Infinity War

Not a single soul knows where the Soul Stone has been hiding, except an old villain from the MCU and Gamora (who somehow found a map). It sounds like lazy writing but let’s break it down to find out for sure. Gamora, at some time in her past, prior to hooking up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, is tasked by Thanos to hunt down the Soul Stone. This is plausible. While hunting it down, she finds a map. Here’s where things start going off the rail.

Who decided to create a map leading to the Soul Stone? Where is this individual now?

There’s also the issue of Gamora burning the map. How did she know it was the only map ever made, let alone a true and accurate map? Did she follow through and go see for herself? On top of it all, Gamora decided to tell Nebula she once found a map and burned it. What makes this scenario a bit off, is that Nebula has always been jealous of Gamora. If she really wanted to keep the map a secret, telling anyone about it would be one step forward towards thwarting Gamora’s plan of hiding the Soul Stone from Thanos. Which is supposedly why Gamora kept it a secret from Quill.

25 Dwarves On Nidavellir Create Infinity Gauntlet

Via Screenrant.com
Marvel Infinity War Eitri (Peter Dinklage)

Thanos having Eitri and the Dwarves on Nidavellir make the Infinity Gauntlet for Thanos isn’t the plot-hole. It’s the timing behind it. The first glimpse MCU fans get of Thanos putting on the Infinity Gauntlet is during a post-credit scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now combine that knowledge with Eitri’s question to Thor in Avengers: Infinity War, “Asgard was supposed to protect us.” Thor replies to this question with, “Asgard is destroyed.” Thor may have misunderstood what Eitri was implying, or he was using the destruction of Asgard as a cop-out for failing to protect Nidavellir.

Heimdall not knowing the Dwarves of Nidavellir were attacked by Thanos is a major plot-hole (as he’s supposed to be able to see everything).

But this issue was never brought up or addressed. It’s also important to note that there is a two-plus year timespan between Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War. Meaning the Infinity Gauntlet could have been made prior to Loki taking over as the pretend Odin. Even if Loki was ruling Asgard at this point, why would he let Thanos invade Nidavellir to have the Infinity Gauntlet made in the first place? It’s not like it would serve his agenda, and we know Loki at this point was all about what was best for him. The bottom-line to all this speculating comes back to the old statement of, “Too many questions and not enough answers equals a plot-hole for the ages.”

24 Dusting Groot

Via Nerdist.com
Marvel Infinity War Groot

The purpose, as described by Thanos himself, of the snap is to randomly eliminate half of the beings in the galaxy and create a balance that does not currently exist. There are two incidents in Avengers: Infinity War which could contradict Thanos’ statement. Meaning he was lying, or we’re looking at glaring plot-hole. The first incident revolves around Dr. Strange bargaining with Thanos for Tony Starks life. Thanos promise to spare Iron Man if Strange gives him the Time Stone. Does this mean Thanos has control over which individuals can survive his snap? The second incident occurs when teenage Groot gets dusted by the snap, being that Groot is the last of his kind. That doesn’t sound like balance to me.

Going off the notion that Thanos has control over certain individuals perishing during his snap, wouldn’t he want to keep certain races from becoming extinct? Or did he pick on Groot, simply because he got rubbed wrong by our favorite teenage tree hero? The inter-web has also been buzzing about why Thanos chose dusting beings over snapping for resources. Most write this off as him being evil, but in truth, it has to do with him being right. Thanos wants to prove his ideas were correct regarding his home planet all along.

23 Thor And The Bifrost

Via Wattpad
Marvel Infinity War

When one MCU plot-hole closes, another is sure to open. Avengers: Infinity War explained how the dark magic of the Bifrost works when Heimdall calls upon it one last time. This one beat resolved several plot-holes from past MCU films, allowing moviegoers one less Reddit thread in the cosmos. But all that went to waste when Thor just happens to Bifrost into Wakanda to save the day like Mighty Mouse. Just for the record, I loved the visuality of this scene. Does it make the plot-hole worth it? Absolutely.

Not for everyone, though. For some, Thor beaming in at correct spot during the most opportune time seems too far-fetched to get over. And I get that. The only way Thor may have known to head to Wakanda, was if he made a pit-stop somewhere else first. But there was no one to tell him where to go. They were all already in Wakanda or fighting Thanos on Titan. The writing was lazy. I feel the visualization of Rocket sitting on Thor’s shoulder as he warps in from the Bifrost, along with teen Groot in tow is enough to give this plot-hole a pass. Perhaps in Avengers 4, the writers will work in a scene to explain this mystery.

22 Trip To Knowhere

Via nerdgeekfeelings.com
MCU Planet Knowhere

I previously mentioned this entry in my Everything Wrong with Avengers: Infinity War article but wanted to dive into it deeper here. Gamora is the only one who knows where the location of the Soul Stone is. Yet, she wants to head straight into the most likely place Thanos will either be next or has already been to. Given that Thor was floating in space when team Guardians arrived on the scene, it seems more than probable that Thanos would beat them to Knowhere. Heck, the only reason they go is that Star-Lord wants to show Thor he can take Thanos on too.

Gamora, instead of telling Peter the truth, decides to tell him to eliminate her if things go bad.

At what point did sacrificing one’s life become the go-to idea when there are still other options available? All Gamora had to do was go into hiding, and the best place to hide would have been Earth. Maybe the battle in Wakanda would have gone down differently if the Guardians were there and Gamora had shared everything she knew about Thanos with the Avengers. The result would have likely been the same, with Thanos getting all six Infinity Stones, but the story would have followed a more logical path.

21 Disappearing Accents

Via baltana.com
Marvel Infinity War Wanda

A major question most MCU fans were asking after Avengers: Infinity War, was where did Scarlet Witch's accent disappear to? While we’re not complaining, as most fans didn’t like the accent in the first place, it still creates a plot-hole which wasn’t explained in the film. Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) had a thick Eastern European accent when she was first introduced with her brother in Avengers: Age of Ultron. In Captain America: Civil War, the accent wasn’t as heavy, but it was still there.

Thanks to Josh Horowitz, he asked the Russo brothers about what is infamously being called Accent Gate, on his Happy Sad Confused podcast. The directors responded by saying, “We have intentionally tried to strip that accent away for a couple of reasons. One is you’ll notice at the beginning of Civil War that Black Widow is training her to be a spy, and two is she’s been on the run, and one of the most distinguishing characteristics that she has is her accent. So, if you’re gonna try to disguise yourself or hide yourself or not be caught, you’re going to try to limit those trigger warnings that would make it easy for someone to identify you, which would be inclusive of her accent.”

Yeah, no. Maybe changing one’s appearance would help while in hiding, but only changing one's accent won’t help much.

20 Thor’s Power

Via Marvel Studios
Marvel Avengers Thor

For the good guys to lose round one in Avengers: Infinity War, Thor’s powers were watered down. This plot-hole, for any die-hard Thor fans, was completely obvious. It all starts during the very first scene of the film. Thor has been beaten down by Thanos because he was holding back to obviously not hurt any of his people on the ship. After this first beatdown, Thor had no reason to hold back, as it was only him, Loki, Hulk, and a barely breathing Heimdall left alive. He could have unleashed his lightning, maybe taking out a few members of the Black Order before Thanos got the Space Stone from Loki.

In the same scene, we also see Thor get held back by Ebony Maw’s metal imprisonment. At the time, it seemed somewhat logical. But after witnessing Thor open the gate to create his new weapon on Nidavellir, along with jump-starting a frozen star, Maw’s metal prison looks like it should have been child’s play for Thor. This plot-hole gives Ebony Maw way more power than he has or deserves. Dr. Strange being held by Maw is one thing, but Thor is a god. And not just any god, he’s the God of Lightning.

19 Wakanda Rhinos

Via Animation World Network

There are a few questionable MCU characters missing from Avengers: Infinity War, with somewhat lazy excuses for them not being in the film. Like being under house arrest, or chilling with the family in Timbuctoo. But what about the Wakanda Rhinos seen in Black Panther? With so many alien Outriders invading, the Rhinos would have helped level the odds on the battlefield. This also could have prevented Scarlet Witch from leaving Visions side. The Rhinos could have been used to protect parts of the shield where Outriders were slipping in around the city, taking away the urgency of opening the shield in the first place.

Much like Wakanda’s tech wasn’t utilized in the final battle, neither were the war Rhinos.

The only explanation for leaving them out of the movie is because animal lovers might have been upset over seeing a Wakanda Rhino get run over and mauled by a group of Outriders. This is somewhat understandable, but it doesn’t make it any less of a plot-hole. Much like Thor’s powers being watered down, so were the advantages of fighting in Wakanda. With the lack of air support, firepower, and the Wakanda Rhinos — it almost seems like the writers wanted our MCU heroes to lose. Because there’s more money to be had in two movies as opposed to one.

18 Invisible Spider-Man

Via melty.fr
Marvel Spider-Man Infinity War

In the grand scheme of events which take place during Infinity War, this entry might seem a tad bit petty. I fully recognize that. But it still needs to be addressed. Peter Parker has his Spidey senses go off as Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian set their ship down over Dr. Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum. Peter recruits Ned to provide a distraction so he can slip out of the bus. Being the dubious side-kick, he is, Ned doesn’t miss a beat. Peter uses the opportunity to slip out the side window of the bus but then takes a moment to put on his mask.

Nobody driving behind the school bus noticed a teenager stuck to its side, putting on the infamous Spider-Man mask?

The likelihood of Peter not getting caught on camera or video while crouched to the side of a school bus is low. Somebody in the cars behind the bus must have noticed a teenager stuck to its side. Let alone watched him put on his mask. Peter Parker's character is all about remaining a mystery to the public, so why be so blatant by putting on his mask outside the bus. All the students were distracted, thanks to Ned, so putting on the mask before heading out the window would have made more sense.

17 Not Using The Time Stone

Via Pinterest and Marvel
MCU Dr. Strange

An argument can be made regarding not using the Time Stone during the fight on Titan. And it’s a plausible argument since Dr. Strange did view 14,605,000 timelines prior to the fight. He knew there was only one path to take and using the Time Stone wasn’t a part of it. But what about in New York, or once he was saved by Iron Man and Spider-Man. Let’s break it down.

He might have been hesitant to use it in New York because he believed he could take on Ebony Maw without using the Time Stone. There are complications to worry about, but you’d think a spaceship hovering over the city would be a reason to break it out. After all, didn’t Dr. Strange say he’d rather use the Time Stone than run and hide to Tony Stark? For argument sake, will give this one a pass. Once saved, however, Dr. Strange should have brought up using it during his conversation about taking Thanos head-on with Stark. This would have brought them all back to Earth, giving them a better chance of defeating Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian on their own terms while not being stuck in outer space. Strange then could have used his powers to investigate future timelines, giving the heroes more than one road to victory. Maybe.

16 War Between Old Friends

Via Pursue News
Marvel Avengers Captain America and Iron Man

The fight between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers during Captain America: Civil War made for a great film. It was believable, considering the circumstances the heroes were facing. Stark is hardheaded, not wanting to give an inch, especially when he believes he’s in the right. He’s not the most level-headed individual in the MCU (slightly behind Star-Lord), but Stark is smart. So, when he finds out the big bad aliens are coming back to Earth for round 2, his leadership skills should have kicked in.

A fearful Tony Stark wouldn’t hesitate to call in Captain America and the rest of the Avengers.

Consider Iron Man's choices here. Either become a criminal like the others because the planet is at risk or continue to play by the rules (after he already broke the other Avengers out of jail). It’s a no-brainer. You call Cap. Instead, audiences were given a scene where Tony hesitates. The scene was obviously written to move the story forward in the movie, but it doesn’t make sense. It’s not how Iron Man would have reacted. He would have stepped up to the plate, swallowed his ego, and called Cap in to help with the battle in New York.

15 Bifrost Summoning

Via syfy.com

Thanks to the’s final act in Avengers: Infinity War, we were able to witness him using the Bifrost by calling on Dark Magic. Knowing he has this power answers previous plot-holes in the MCU while opening another. If Heimdall had this power, why didn’t he shuttle the King of Asgard to safety when the battle on the ship started to go south. Instead of sending Hulk back to Earth, he should have sent Thor (and maybe Loki) to Nidavellir. And then if he had time, Heimdall could have sent Hulk to Earth to warn the others.

There’s room for debate on this topic, as Heimdall may not have had time to use the Bifrost when the ship was first attacked. We don’t know, because the scene was left out of the movie. According to the comics, there’s a heavy price to pay for wielding dark magic. Which is why Heimdall doesn’t use it more often. But it’s also this very reason as to why sending Hulk doesn’t line up. Not only could using the Dark Magic be harmful to Heimdall, but to the one being sent too. Which is why it should have been Thor (who’s a god and has used it before) as opposed to Hulk. This may have changed some events in Avengers: Infinity War, but at least it wouldn’t have created another plot-hole in the MCU.

14 Destruction Of Nova

Via Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki - Fandom
Marvel Xandar

We are led to believe that Thanos only eliminates half of a planet (species) for the betterment of the galaxy. He lets half of the Asgardians escape when he attacks Thor’s ship and he only terminates half of Gamora’s people when he adopts her as a daughter. Thanos also lets some individuals live, if he feels they are worthy or he wants to let the universe decide their fate instead.

When the conversation of Nova comes up — where are the survivors?

If Thanos let some be spared when attacking Nova for the Power Stone, then a distress call should have gone out to the galaxy regarding the attack. But no one knows about Nova except Thor because Thanos had the Power Stone. If an individual had been able to send out some type of distress beacon, then Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy would have known immediately what Thanos was up to. Instead, we’re led to believe nobody survived the attack, which doesn’t line up with Thanos’ beliefs and actions throughout the rest of Avengers: Infinity War. Thanos is an evil guy, there’s no getting around that. But if his agenda was to make the galaxy a better place, it seems unlikely he would have destroyed everyone on Nova.

13 Where Art Thou Kraglin

Via Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki - Fandom
MCU Kraglin GotG Vol.2

Kraglin isn’t a major player in the MCU and he certainly wouldn’t have made a difference, but his absence was still noticed by die-hard fans. The last time we saw Kraglin was at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. In fact, it was during a post-credit mid-scene in which we see Kraglin learning to use Yondu’s Yaka Arrow. He wasn’t good at it then, but he would have plenty of time to practice prior to the events of Infinity War. Thanks to ScreenRant, we know James Gunn attempted to address this issue via Twitter. He responded to fans by saying:

“Kraglin is still around - don’t worry! He has important stuff to do and all will be eventually revealed (thus has been my top question of the day btw so I’m glad to see you’re keeping him in your hearts!).”

Much like other MCU characters, it seems Kraglin was sidelined due to the number of individuals already in Avengers: Infinity War. Is it possible Kraglin was going about other business? Sure. Just like it's plausible that Hawkeye and Ant-Man were busy as well. But at the end of the day, having so many characters missing raises questions while beginning to look a lot like convenient writing.

12 Unexplained Healing

via ABS-CBN News

Thanos has all six Infinity Stones and is about to perform his snap before being attacked by Thor. Thor dodges Thanos’ attack and drives Stormbreaker into the purple giant’s chest. Thanos appears to be severely injured by the attack but still manages to perform his infamous snap. We then see Thanos in the Soul Stone realm with a younger Gamora, followed by him returning to the present and using the Space Stone to warp off Earth.

The next time we see Thanos, he’s enjoying watching the sunset on a random planet. His injuries seem to be healed, minus damage done to his arm from the Infinity Gauntlet being used to perform the snap. The assumption on the inter-web is that he used the Time Stone to reverse the damage done to him by Thor after escaping. But this scene was not in the movie. If it did take place, leaving it out opens a major plot-hole. According to how events played out in Infinity War, Thanos should not have survived without being able to go back in time and snap prior to Thor’s attack. Perhaps it will all be explained in Avengers 4, but for now, it’s just another MCU problem.

11 Fearful Hulk

via: 65blogs.com

In Thor: Ragnarok, audiences were introduced to a new version of Hulk. Instead of being all about the smash 24-7, he’s beginning to form a personality of his own. In Avengers: Infinity War the growth of Hulks personality was used towards the explanation of him not wanting to come out and play. But is this reasoning legit? The MCU is notorious for changing themes from the comics to fit their own storylines but creating a frightened Hulk might have pushed the boundaries a tad too far.

Hulk is Hulk because he’s angry. His whole goal in life is to fight and smash.

Following the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, fans were led to believe Hulk was in charge because Banner was being a wimp. Now all of sudden, the roles are reversed? Creating this story arc is another way in which the Avengers powers were watered down just so they could be defeated in Avengers: Infinity War. This plot-hole will hopefully be explained in Avengers 4, allowing for the return of the Hulk MCU fans adore. Banner is the brains, and Hulk is the smash. It’s that simple. Changing this dynamic to his character not only seems out of place but doesn’t line up with his previous actions either.

10 Post Credit Plot-Hole

Via The Wrap and superpouvoir.com
Marvel Avengers Infinity War Post Credit Scene

There are two distinct moments during the post credit scene of Avengers: Infinity War in which a plot-hole has been created. The first revolves around the time difference regarding people being turned to dust. As I mentioned in a previous article, people begin fading away directly after Maria Hill states multiple objects have entered the Earth’s atmosphere. This correlates with the scene in which Okoye pulls up a Star Wars like hologram, informing the Avengers the battle is about to begin. It’s a huge time lapse problem which has yet to be explained by the Russo brothers.

The second plot-hole occurs when Nick Fury runs back to his vehicle and pulls out an Intergalactic Pager to call Captain Marvel. What about this event causes him to call Captain Marvel now? Shouldn’t the events of The Avengers been enough of a cause to call her in for help? After all, both deal with the possibility of Earth’s destruction due to an invasion from aliens. How Fury obtained the Intergalactic Pager will most likely be explained in the upcoming Captain Marvel movie, but his reasons for waiting to use it might not be explored. That is unless Fury somehow knew the about the Infinity Gauntlet and how Thanos might use it.

9 Iron Man Survives Fatal Injury

Marvel 25 Things Wrong With Avengers Infinity War

Team Avengers 2.0 are following the path towards Dr. Strange’s one timeline of success. During the fight, several mishaps take place, which one could say Strange knew about in advance. This leads to things falling apart for our MCU heroes quickly, with Iron Man taking a severe beating from Thanos. The battle comes to an end with Thanos driving a sharp object through the chest of Iron Man and Strange bargaining for his life.

Tony Stark is fatally injured prior to Dr. Strange bargaining with Thanos for his life in exchange for the Time Stone.

This scene reminds us of a similar healing which took place during Black Panther. Agent Ross is severely injured by taking a bullet in the back and is magically healed by Wakanda tech just a few scenes later. It is possible Tony survives his wound due to the same tech (Nano Technology), but it’s never addressed in the movie. Leaving many fans to wonder how in the world Tony was able to survive, let alone move around while everyone is being turned into dust. There’s also the question as to why Strange waited until Tony was injured. He could have made the deal prior to Thanos dealing what should have been a fatal blow.

8 Hulk Fighting Thanos

Via Den of Geek
Marvel Hulk and Thanos

In the opening scene of Avengers: Infinity War, audiences are presented with the destruction leveled upon the Asgardian ship. Ebony Maw recites his drawn-out monologue while the survivors are put to rest in the name of Thanos. Loki then makes a play at turning the tide by introducing the Hulk into the battle. But why wasn’t he fighting in the first place? If the Hulk can change the course of events all by himself, he should have been fighting when the Black Order first boarded the ship. Audiences weren’t shown this part of the fight, so its possible he was. But according to how Loki introduces him, it is made to seem like he wasn’t.

There’s also the issue of how the Hulk can take on Thanos and the entire Black Order by himself when apparently two gods couldn’t handle the task in conjunction with a small army and Heimdall. This entire order of events makes absolutely no sense. Even if Hulk was ordered to lay low while the fight began, could he have had the control to wait for Loki’s introduction? I think not. The Hulk loves to fight, and he certainly wouldn’t be sidelined by a request from either Thor or Loki. We know this because he charged head-on into fighting Surtur just moments before in Thor: Ragnarok when Surtur was needed to win the battle against Hela.

7 Splitting Up The Black Order

Via Marvel Studios
Marvel Infinity War Black Order

Thanos apparently forgot he once mentioned he would obtain the Infinity Stones by himself, as he puts together a crew to help him with his endeavor. The Black Order was necessary, not just to provide the action MCU fans were craving, but to help move the plot along too. The problem, however, is in their inconsistencies regarding their powers. In the opening of Avengers: Infinity War, they manage to take down half the Asgardians, Hulk, Loki, Heimdall, and Thor. But in later scenes, get their rear ends handed to them by heroes who are much less powerful (Black Widow).

If they can’t handle their business when split apart, why would Thanos order them to go their separate ways? It’s not like he was on a time schedule. The success over the Asgardian ship only proves that they should have been by his side for all the fights, essentially guaranteeing Thanos a win. But where is the suspense in that you might ask? Honestly, there isn’t any, but it would be the logical path to take. The only reason to split up the team would be to either cause a distraction or to move a storyline along for no apparent reason.
