The chances of an Avenger appearing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are a lot better than anyone may have realized, as a representative of Marvel has said that anything is possible in regards to a Marvel hero or villain appearing in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Bill Rosemann, the vice president and creative director of Marvel Games, recently appeared on Game Informer's GI Showwhere he talked about Marvel's relationship with Nintendo. Rosemann was asked if he could imagine a universe where a Marvel character could appear in Super Smash Bros.

“Well I mean, I can imagine anything," said Rosemann. "Hawkeye standing next to Link, and both shooting some arrows… I mean anything could happen, but I’m not the person that makes decisions such as that.”

It seems that Marvel would be open to a character appearing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and that the ball is now in Nintendo's court. There are numerous questions relating to licensing agreements that would likely prevent such an incredible crossover from happening, as Disney isn't likely to allow one of its prized characters to appear in a crossover game without asking for a lot in return and the roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is already packed as it is.

Masahiro Sakurai recently released a book that collected his Famitsu articles from the past five years, along with some new insights into the development of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Sakurai specifically named Goku and Iron Man as two characters who will likely never appear in the series, and now it seems that he may have jumped the gun a little.

It's unclear what exactly qualifies a character for the Super Smash Bros. series, as the games have long abandoned the notion of just containing Nintendo characters. There are even characters who bend the rules of being video game characters. For example, R.O.B. is based on a toy.

The Nintendo Switch has at least one major Marvel exclusive in the form of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, so it's clear that the two companies are on good terms. The major Marvel characters have all appeared in video games (including fighting games) in the past, so it wouldn't be too much of a jump to see the likes of Captain America, Spider-Man, or Wolverine in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
