Comic book movies are a genre in which avoiding spoilers is an impossibility. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, in particular, is a franchise that lays seeds for future events well in advance and this technique only makes the fans speculate and ache for more information. Almost every movie has some game-changing event that will have repercussions in future movies, and so there are numerous websites and groups who take it upon themselves to scrutinize every inch of a trailer, whether it is even the smallest of teasers, to catch any hint of a spoiler.

Perhaps watching the movie with prior knowledge gives these kinds of people some sense of security. No matter what the reason, the easiest way sometimes isn’t to go through such painstaking process of deciphering clues, it can be found in the film’s toylines.

Unlike films, toys can’t just be given a release date and have them distributed at that specific time. These action figures are used to hype up the film’s release and form part of the marketing and franchise media. A significant portion of revenue is generated from this, and so these toys are put up for sale some time before the film is scheduled in cinemas. Pre-orders also play a part, and to add further interest for fans these toys showcase the heroes as they would be seen in the movie. The downside to this is that they end up giving out crucial events in the film.

The following are 23 toys that spoiled Marvel movies. For those who haven't seen Avengers: Infinity War yet, here is your spoiler warning!

23 Thor With Both Eyes

via cbr.com

Thor: Ragnarok, though it might have been a roller-coaster of a ride filled with laughs and great moments, wasn’t one of the best times the God of Thunder had. To start off, he lost his father, he then lost control of Asgard to Hela, was dumped to and captured on Sakaar, made to fight his friend, then returned to Asgard only to blow it up. Finally, the poor guy even lost his right eye. Needless to say, he was really in need of a break.

Judging from this action figure, it appeared Thor didn’t need to wear an eyepatch anymore.

In Thor: Ragnarok, he had adopted his father’s trademark look and had sported the eyepatch to conceal the large gash where his eye used to be. Avengers: Infinity War trailers made it seem as if we were going to see this continuity in place but this action figure shows the God of Thunder in the get up from the film, all complete with his thunder powers in place too. So what was up with the lack of an eyepatch? This action figure made it all top apparent that Thor would not be eyeless for too long and we would see him at least healed partially for Avengers: Infinity War.

22 The Mark L (50)

via pinterest.com

Iron Man gets a new armor every movie. There have been 50 armors in total across all films! Tony Stark has really gone to work on these bad boys and each iteration brings something new to the table. On occasion, his armors don’t make sense such as the one that got destroyed after colliding with a truck. The absurdity of an Iron Man armor being blasted to pieces by an ordinary vehicle was too ludicrous o believe and we didn’t get anything as weird again, unless you count Tony losing to the Winter Soldier and Captain America in Civil War, but there were other factors in place so that one can be given a pass. Still, for Infinity War Iron Man needed to up his game and we saw him bring a new suit unparalleled in quality.

Unfortunately, this suit’s capabilities were shown earlier than expected. In the Infinity War trailers, we saw hints of nano technology for this armor but this toy figure took it one further and showcased the Mark 50’s modular capabilities. Iron Man can be seen brandishing a cannon of sorts, with his usual repulsors paling in comparison to what we see here. This made his repulsor feats in the trailers look meek compared to what we knew to expect from the action figure reveal.

21 Loki's Fate

via pinterest.com

Loki was always in danger outside of Asgard once his plan on acquiring the Tesseract failed. In The Avengers, Loki had the Mind Stone in possession thanks to Thanos, with whom Loki had somehow become associated with after his great fall into the abyss as seen in Thor. Thanos commissioned Loki to bring him the Space Stone, housed within the Tesseract, and in return gave him control of the Chitauri army. But as we know Loki not only failed in getting the Tesseract, he even lost the Mind Stone. The failures wouldn’t sit well with The Mad Titan. So once Asgard was destroyed and Thanos’ Sanctuary-II space vessel intercepted the Asgardians, Loki was target #1 for Thanos.

But while we knew Loki would face Thanos’ wrath somehow, it wasn’t completely clear if the Titan was on the Sanctuary-II himself. However, just like trailers, toylines are also given grand marketing and newer models are shown in situations as would be seen in the movies. Thus, this very specific posing of Thanos and Loki’s action figures made it clear that Loki would not be getting too far ahead in the story as he is still wearing the same costume from Thor: Ragnarok and we had only seen the spaceship scenes in the trailers featuring Loki, which meant that Thanos would be making Loki pay.

20 Captain America's New Gauntlets

via pinterest.com

In the original, leaked trailer of Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America was only slightly seen. He caught a spear thrown from Proxima Midnight and moved out of the shadows to reveal his new look, complete with long hair and a beard that was meant to showcase his new identity as a fugitive or a ‘Nomad.’ While all that was cool it wasn’t certain how he would fare in a fight against alien creatures as he didn’t have his trusted shield anymore. In the official trailer for the film, we saw King T’Challa order someone to “get (Steve) a shield.” However, the shield in question was not shown.

Spoiling the big reveal was the Captain America action figure.

While it undoubtedly looked cool as Steve’s new Devil May Care appearance coupled with his rather tattered suit had a nice visage to it, the focal point of interest was the two gauntlets in his grasp. As Black Panther made it ostensibly clear that Wakanda had as much Vibranium in abundance as a Cinema has popcorn, it was obvious that these new gauntlets weren’t just any other means of protection but Vibranium substitutes for the shield Steve had left behind in Captain America: Civil War.

19 Bruce Banner Taking Charge

via cbr.com

Thor: Ragnarok was the beginning of a ‘mini-arc’ for Bruce Banner and The Hulk that is meant to conclude with Avengers 4. As we saw in Ragnarok, Banner was dormant for 2 years as Hulk took control of the body. At the end of the film Banner was still not back and Hulk sparred with Thanos on the Statesmen ship. Banner is never on any of the MCU films’ posters and it is always the Hulk that is advertised. Due to this, it seemed like a given that the Hulkbuster we saw in Avengers: Infinity War trailers had the Hulk himself inside it.

False marketing from Marvel’s part also had us believing something else.

The Hulk was never in the movie except for the opening scene but the trailer had us believe he would be running into battle with the rest of the Avengers. As Tony Stark was too busy not being on Earth during the movie everyone was convinced it would be the Hulk commanding the Hulkbuster. But all we had to do was take a look at this toy Lego toyline to tell us what the true storyline would be. In it, it is Bruce Banner who exits the Hulbuster, not the Hulk. The toys within the case showcase the battle in Wakanda, leaving no doubt that it is meant to depict the same scene as in the trailer. This spoiler was at least effective in countering Marvel’s false advertising to some degree.

18 A Suit Of His Own

via pinterest.com

The original Black Panther teaser trailer left more to be desired, and maybe that’s what the studio was hoping for as watching the trailer left the viewer wanting to know more seeing that it didn’t seem to reveal too much as to what we would be seeing in the movie. Most of Black Panther’s marketing campaign focused on the country of Wakanda. It was done to perfection too as we couldn’t wait to see exactly what the big deal was about this place and if it really could be a game changer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Slightly lost in the shuffle was the antagonist, Erik Killmonger. He more than made up for it when the film was released and many argue he is the best comic movie villain to date.

But how he would lock horns with the titular Black Panther was spoiled beforehand when Black Panther’s toyline was teased in late 2017 which showed Killmonger very clearly labeled and wearing the Black Panther suit. Therefore, it was imminently obvious that we would be seeing the antagonist getting a suit of his own, like Iron Monger had in Iron Man, making a showdown of two Panthers a foregone conclusion.

17 Iron Spider's Suit Capabilities

via newtoysnews.com

The Iron Spider suit was first seen in the final scene of Spider-Man: Homecoming. At the time the film developers did the wise thing and had Peter Parker reject Tony Stark’s offer to join the Avengers and adopt the suit. It made his eventual anointment into the Avengers in Infinity War all the better and Peter’s donning of the Iron Spider suit in the movie was a much better way than Stark’s original intention.

While it was a foregone conclusion that Peter would be putting on the Iron Spider suit at some point in time, as that snazzy suit was too well prepared to just be a tease for the fans, its abilities weren’t at all shown in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

In the build-up to Avengers: Infinity War we saw previews of Peter in the suit but not much else was shown other than how cool it looked.

However, the toyline for the Infinity War suit revealed that along with the new capabilities, the suit would literally turn Peter into a spider by adding multiple limbs protruding from the back. This kind of suit was seen in the comics and would certainly be a fanboy’s dream. So its reveal before the film’s release must have taken away some of the pleasurable shock effect from the fans.

16 The Unlikely Trio

via marveltoynews.com

Thor was always going to be the bridge between the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. The Guardians were so far out in the universe that it was impossible to expect our heroes on Earth to have any chance of meeting these guys. Thor, meanwhile, had access to the Bifrost and by and large was more space-centric than the rest of his teammates, so it was natural to expect him to come across the Guardians. As it turned out, he did.

The toy figures, though, made it clear Thor would be teaming up with two specific members of the Guardians.

In the Avengers: Infinity War trailer originally shown, and leaked, at Comic-Con, we saw the Guardians picking up a lost Thor in space and it wasn’t clear if they would all be joining him on his adventure. But this toyline made it obvious that Peter Quill, Drax, Gamora, and Mantis would not be tagging along for Thor’s quest and that it would be the pair of Rocket Raccoon and Groot who would be accompanying the God of Thunder instead. An unlikely trio for sure as Thor would be expected to be taken aback by a creature he wasn’t certain was a rabbit or something else.

15 The New York Invasion

via bestofcomicbooks.com

We’ve already looked into the spoiler for Spider-Man’s new suit in Infinity War, but this toy set takes it one step further. In the trailers for the film it was not clear how Peter Parker would find himself in the company of Doctor Strange and Tony Stark on the planet Titan as Tony, Strange and Banner were supposed to be together in New York while Peter was on a school bus. This toy set told us exactly how he would rendezvous with them.

While it shouldn’t have been too difficult to believe Peter would find Tony and Doctor Strange somehow, the circumstances of their meeting was made clear by the contents of the toy set that shows Spider-Man and Doctor Strange battling one of the children of Thanos. In none of the trailers did we see Cull Obsidian–we’ll get to the spoiler of his name in a little bit too–in New York but it was to be expected once you saw these toys. Obsidian is shown to be in the midst of an attack on Doctor Strange outside his sanatorium and it is the Iron Spider costume that Peter has donned to assist Doctor Strange in his fight.

14 Discount Hulk's Name

via imgflip.com

It is most likely you never even knew what the name of the discount Hulk was in Avengers: Infinity War. The brute who was the largest of Thanos’ children in the film barely eked out a word during the runtime and displayed little to no intelligence. He was more or less an even more oafish version of the Hulk, who met his end in rather simple terms at the hands of the Hulkbuster (ironically). Out of all the Black Order, this guy had the least involvement to the plot as he didn’t have a rival, like Black Widow with Proxima Midnight or Doctor Strange with Ebony Maw. However, non-fans of the comics, who were no doubt unaware of this guy’s identity, would have found out what his name was by just looking at the name display in one of the toy sets from the movie.

In the same toy set as mentioned in the previous point featuring Doctor Strange and Spider-Man, Cull Obsidian’s name was displayed on the box and the encounter between the heroes and the villain was brought some shape and form. Maybe the creators were aware Obsidian didn’t have much to offer as far as dialogue was concerned and wanted to spoil his name reveal so that people would go into Infinity War knowing who this guy was.

13 Peter, I Am Your Father

via pinterest.com

In all honesty, the Guardians of the Galaxy had gotten way more famous by 2017 than they had been in 2014. When Vol. 1 was set for release it was a big gamble on Marvel’s part as the band of misfits were among the least recognizable of Marvel's superheroes. Hardly anyone had ever heard of them and this made the film even better as viewers saw them through eyes unburdened by expectation. By Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the team’s popularity was sky high and anticipation for the film meant many had done their homework on the characters’ backgrounds from the comics.

When Kurt Russell was announced as one of the characters in the film it was obvious an actor of is standing would be playing the antagonist.

It was also known to quite a few that Ego would be Star-Lord’s father. But not everyone uses the internet regularly or does fact checks about comic book characters before watching the movies. Thus, for these people, the cover for Marvel’s Legends series must have brought some shock as it starkly narrates Ego as Star-Lord’s long-lost father. This revelation, coupled with the most obvious scenario of Ego being the antagonist, made the film’s story rather obvious.

12 Guess Who?

via instagram.com

Captain America: Civil War didn’t have a main antagonist, per se. While Zemo was no doubt the primary instigator of the conflict between the heroes the climactic duel featured only Captain America, The Winter Soldier, and Iron Man. Due to this, the film lives up to its Civil War tagline. But many people tend to forget that the entire conflict began because of an incident in Lagos where the Avengers’ plans went awry, resulting in a huge explosion that took many lives. It might not have been entirely clear what they were trying to prevent in that scene, but the reveal of former antagonist Crossbones intrigued everyone.

As it happened, Crossbones was attempting to make away with a chemical weapon and that was what the Avengers were trying to stop. It was a surprise to find Crossbones alive as he was believed to have perished in The Winter Soldier. While this toyline didn’t reveal who was under the Crossbones mask, they didn’t need to actually tell us as it was obvious. There’s also the fact that the toys feature an escaping truck with the chemical weapon in clear view and the Avengers in pursuit. This was the opening scene of Captain America: Civil War as seen in Lego.

11 The Fate Of Heimdall

via newtoynews.com

Here’s another significant spoilery toy for you. Although this was not seen in Avengers: Infinity War, this Thor toy gave away the loss of his best friend Heimdall. The fate of the Asgardians was always bleak at best when the end credits scene of Thor: Ragnarok showed Thanos’ Sanctuary-II approaching ominously. Thor was obviously not going to be one of the goners of Thanos’ wrath so it had to be some big-time players whose loss would stamp in Thanos’ threat to the viewers for the rest of the film. Among the most powerful characters on the ship were Loki, Hulk, and Heimdall. Loki’s fate was also spoiled as told earlier on in this list and here we see Heimdall’s end teased heavily too.

Heimdall was never seen without his trusty sword. It granted access to the Bifrost on Asgard and after its destruction, it would only take something monumental for Heimdall to part with it. Ultimately, the all-seeing Asgardian met his end at the hands of Thanos in the opening scene of Infinity War and Thor’s action figure having possession of it instead of a Heimdall action figure should have alerted fans to the scene in the movie beforehand.

10 Nidavellir, The Place To Be

via cbr.com

As mentioned previously, Thor, Rocket, and Groot’s adventure in space was ruined already by their collective action figures on sale. This box set showed us exactly what they would be up to. Not only that, it also told us where the heroes would head off to craft Thor’s new weapon. As can be seen above, although the figurines are all misplaced and not given proper context, Thor is clearly up to some thunder busting as he is seen powering a mechanism with his powers. Those who have seen Avengers: Infinity War will know that Rocket’s space pod was used by Thor to provide power to the mechanism, and when that wasn’t enough Thor himself would make use of his powers.

Even Groot can be seen fashioning the handle for Stormbreaker in the back while the other two are busy with the creation of the weapon. To top it all off, the back of the toy box set reveals the name of the location as Nidavellir. The trailers for the film had given enough indication that the trio would be busy with making the all-powerful weapon and it might have been this obviousness that motivated the toy distributors to not give a care for spoilers on the box set.

9 The Asgardian Showdown

via bestofcomicbooks.com

Hela was said to have command over those that had perished. In order for her to live up to that moniker, she had to display some feats in that regard, and she did not disappoint as she used the Eternal Flame that was housed within Asgard’s vault and revived her army. Thus, she was the rightful Goddess of Death. What was left to be seen after that was how she would command the army and how the battle would play out.

This box set gave away the film’s climactic fight.

Our heroes hitched a ride from Sakaar, aboard the Grandmaster’s trusty air vessel and used it to go through a wormhole as a shortcut to Asgard. Hela would still not back down and used her army to prevent the fleeing Asgardians from escaping into space. All this was great to watch but was already shown in superb detail as part of a Lego toy set. This had comprised of all the characters that would be in the scene like Valkyrie and Thor, along with Hela’s army, and the ship the Asgardians would escape from. It wouldn’t take a real sharp mind to crack this scene as even Hela’s loyal wolf Fenris was part of the package. Only the finale of a movie would have such a situation.

8 Hawkeye's Aid Of Loki

via pinterest.com

We look back all the way to 6 years ago on this one. Hawkeye made his debut in Thor in 2011 in a blink and you miss guest appearance, and for most viewers, his actual debut was in The Avengers. This is why it was a shocker to see the bowman’s lego figure driving the car and aiding Loki’s escape. It was a spoiler for the beginning scene of The Avengers where Loki made his explosive appearance by taking down the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents on the scene and manipulating Hawkeye’s mind using the scepter that we now know housed the Mind Infinity stone.

But this toy set made it appear more sinister to fans as it implied that Hawkeye had been in cahoots with Loki all along. Perhaps to throw off people from figuring out the entire scene from the film, the toy developers threw in Iron Man too and it looked as if Iron Man was giving chase to the duo. Still, there’s no denying that this Lego toy set did reveal that Hawkeye would be working for Loki someway and somehow which in itself was a big spoiler as Hawkeye was on The Avengers poster as part of the all-star team.

7 En-Vision-ing The Movie

vi imgflip.com

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, we saw for the first time the inclusion of heroes other than the original members whose solo movies had led us to the All-star team films. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver had already been promoted to be in the film, albeit as antagonists rather than their eventual role of protagonists, but there was one more character that was set to be in the movie. Vision’s only teasing appearance had been of his eyes.

In the trailers the way this was implied made it seem as if Ultron would realize his mission of acquiring a much stronger body for himself. But for those who took trips to their newest supermarket the reveal wasn’t so surprising after all. The Vision’s big reveal was very casually given away as part of his toyline. As can be seen, it wasn’t even part of an expensive brand, which meant that you didn’t even need to go into a comic book or toy store to find the action figure. Considering Ultron’s main motive in the film was to get a more able body for himself it wasn’t the smartest of moves from Marvel to allow Vision’s toy to reveal that Ultron would not be transferring his conscience into this body.

6 A Surprise Of A Reveal

via imgflip.com

Spider-Man might just have the best rogues gallery in all of comic book history. He is best rivaled by Batman, whose own list of antagonists are of the highest quality, but as we are here talking about Marvel villains then Spider-Man takes the top spot. In the Spider-Man films by this point, we have already seen the heavy hitters of Doc Ock, Green Goblin, and Venom. With Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel decided to take a lighter approach villain-wise and opted for the Vulture. Michael Keaton, ironically formerly known as Batman, was awesome in the role and the movie was better for it. But there was another well-known Spider-Man villain present in the Shocker.

The Shocker’s presence in the movie was not teased at all and this toy must have confused most people. There was no way around it either as the label clearly told us it was Shocker and was from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Spider-Man: Homecoming logo was visible just above. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suffered from stuffing a whole lot of villains so it was a point of apprehension for fans to find out there would be two villains in Homecoming. Thankfully Shocker was more of a side-villain than a primary antagonist and the Vulture remained the main threat.

5 Calling All Heroes

via imgflip.com

It wasn’t wholly unexpected to see War Machine in Avengers: Age of Ultron as the character is Tony Stark’s best friend and had had a pivotal role in all the Iron Man films to that point. However, War Machine’s very inclusion in Age of Ultron was a spoiler in itself as he had never been seen with the Avengers before that. He had been considered as more of an Iron Man-centric character seeing that there was never any mention of him in The Avengers nor in the Captain America movies, which should have been the closest association War Machine could have with another hero’s solo film series. Therefore, the knowledge that War Machine would be in Avengers: Age of Ultron gave away that there would be a conflict with global consequences.

Of course, you would have to be pretty naive to think that there wouldn’t be any global trouble to expect from Ultron, but we still had no clue just how big things could get in that film. Besides, War Machine was not the only character spoiled as an action figure for Falcon was also released for sale alongside that of War Machine.

4 The Merc With No Mouth

via pinterest.com

There have been films other than the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies spoiled by a toy collection and this one is the oldest on the list. In 2009, X-Men Origins: Wolverine was set for release. The film, while being a prequel, was set to introduce some new heroes. One of these was in the studio’s long-term plans and was a character whose debut carried some anticipation. Deadpool’s fourth wall breaking tendencies were sorely missed.

And this toy gave away the fact that he wouldn’t even be addressing the audience considering that he had no mouth to speak from. On this occasion it was ironic that his nickname was supposed to be the Merc with a Mouth as he was neither a mercenary–by the ending of the film–nor had a mouth. Although his Wade Wilson persona stuck rather close to the comic book iteration, the Deadpool persona’s mute and strange look was given away when the toy collection was released. Specifically titled as Deadpool on the casing, fans were made aware that the character would be meeting a sticky fate by the end of the film. And nobody really liked what they saw and what they expected.
