Marvel's Avengers will feature six playable characters on launch, and different players will encounter alternate endings.
There might still be six months between now and the release of Marvel's Avengers, and an awful lot of games to be released during that time, but that doesn't mean we are any less excited about its arrival. Yes, the revelations and previews of the game have been less than stellar so far, but whatever happens, this is still an Avengers game after all.
One of the biggest complaints about the game following the release of its first trailer was the design of the characters. It is plain to see from more recent footage that the issue has been addressed. They don't look more like their MCU counterparts, and they're not supposed to, but they have definitely been improved.

The game's developers are being very careful when it comes to what they reveal about the game and when. Over the course of the past few days, two pretty big things have been revealed. Firstly, upon launch, the game will have six playable characters. Crystal Dynamics head Scot Amos said so during an interview with IGN Italy. Since most missions have been designed to be played through with a specific hero, that shouldn't be an issue for most players.
The six characters playable from launch will be Ms. Marvel, Hulk, Black Widow, Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. Since the story is based around the death of that last hero, we're guessing he won't be playable for long but will return at some point. Although, Cap might not return for all players. Amos also revealed that the game will have alternate endings.
What those endings are and how they will work remains to be seen. Since Square Enix previously revealed that the game will be continually added to via updates, and the story will be far from over once the original game is finished, it'll be interesting to see how different alternate endings are built upon. On the character front, it's probably safe to assume that other heroes will be added during those updates. In fact, the appearance of Ant-Man has already been teased.
