Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's roster might be complete, but the game's director Masahiro Sakurai has revealed the series might not be done for good.

Sora from Kingdom Hearts was added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate last month. His addition means the biggest roster in Smash history is now complete. It might also mean that's the last time we ever get to see a dramatic Smash fighter reveal. Series director Masahiro Sakurai has hinted that Ultimate could well be the last Smash game ever.

In a partial u-turn, Sakurai has now admitted he is undecided on what the future holds for Super Smash Bros. “I don’t think about sequels often. But I can’t say that this is definitely the last Smash Bros,” Sakurai revealed to Famitsu in an interview translated by VGC. “I need to think about whether we should release another Smash Bros. game at the risk of disappointing the users.”

This is a little surprising as Sakurai has previously admitted he doesn't know how he and the rest of the Smash team could make something bigger and better than Ultimate. The game and its roster took a tremendous amount of time and effort to put together. Sakurai has admitted since Sora's reveal that the team responsible for preparing the DLC worked as hard as they would have to create an entire game.

Later in the same interview, Sakurai also admits that he doesn't think the Smash series can continue without him. That might sound a little big-headed, but he adds that he has actually tried to leave the series to someone else before. “I’d like to leave it to someone else, and I’ve actually tried that, but it hasn’t worked out.”

As the future of Super Smash Bros. remains in limbo, other developers are trying their hand at filling the void it may leave in the future. Nickelodeon via All-Star Brawl, and perhaps a Warner Bros. Multiverse fighting game in the future. Leaks suggest we will soon be able to have Batman and Gandalf square off, but no one working on the game has revealed anything official just yet.
