The conclusion to Bioware's Mass Effect trilogy was notoriously hated by fans of the series and the company. The discussion surrounding it has survived long after the game was no longer relevant since it ties into discussions about crunch in the gaming industry and people who worked on the game have discussed what they might have changed.

As fans of the series wait for more details about the newest installment, there's been lots of speculation based on the current trailer about how the endings of Mass Effect 3 will play into the next game. These details are the ones you may have missed or not known about Mass Effect 3's infamous "colour-coded endings".

10 The Refusal Ending

Mass Effect 3 Ending, Shepard Speaking To The Child

It's often said that Mass Effect 3 has three different endings, with varying degrees of success depending on how well the player did during the course of the game. This isn't entirely true, however - players who weren't too scared to disrespect the Child who explains the rules to Shepard could either declare they wouldn't choose, or agree before shooting the child.

Either way, the boy's voice goes much deeper and robotic, declaring that the cycle will continue. Sometime in the future, it's seen that Liara's time capsule has managed to survive underground. It may be a dissatisfying ending, but it is a possible ending.

9 Where You Land On Earth

Players realized quickly that the Earth missions took place in London, given the iconic Big Ben seen in the panning shots. However, fans may not have realized that you can actually orient yourself when beginning the mission.

The Priority: Earth mission begins on the left bank of the River Thames, around the location of the (contemporary) Hungerford Bridge. Players were able to determine this by the positioning of Big Ben, among other identifiable landmarks they could spy in-between fights.

8 Different Characters Narrate The Different Endings

Players who didn't replay the finale to discover the other endings might not realize that each of the three primary endings are narrated by a different character. General Hackett voices the "Destroy" ending since Shepard is presumed dead.

The "Control" ending features Shepard as the narrator, having taken over as the AI and lost all human form. Finally, the Synthesis ending is voiced by EDI, the AI robot companion to Shepard since her and Joker's romantic relationship has such a vested interest in the synthetic-organic merge.

7 Admiral Hackett's Opposite Outlooks

Hackett may only voice one of the possible endings, but there are actually two variations of his narration. In one version, he speaks mournfully of the sacrifices they had to make to defeat the Reapers but seems hopeful about their future and the potential to rebuild.

However, if the player's Effective Military Strength (EMS) is low going into this final mission, Hackett's "Destroy" narration is much more depressing and bleak-. He isn't nearly as hopeful for the future as he is under other circumstances.

6 The Krogans Are Rebuilding Tuchanka

The Krogan species, over the course of Mass Effect, is struggling to survive despite a biological weapon released upon them, the Genophage, that limited how much they could reproduce.

That's why it's so heartening to see that, in the endings of Mass Effect (assuming the player didn't disobey the child), the Krogans are actively rebuilding their waste-land planet of Tuchanka. If the player chooses the Synthesis ending, there's even an extra card showing Tuchanka's new towering buildings.

5 Quarians Are No Longer Isolated In Control Or Destroy

Mass Effect 3 Destroy or Control Ending Quarians

Quarians in Mass Effect are a race of nomadic aliens, forced off their home planet in a war to travel the stars in their ships, collectively called the Migrant Fleet. They seldom leave their ships to interact with other species on planets.

However, one of the cards during the Control and Destroy endings shows multiple Quarians mingling on a planet's surface - it's only briefly on the screen, so it would be hard to catch the detail that they are on a planet, which they aren't usually. Hopefully, this means that, after Mass Effect 3, the Quarians' luck turns around.

4 The Geth Return The Qunari Homeworlds In Synthesis

Mass Effect 3 Synthesis Ending Geth and Quarians Peace

If the player chooses the Synthesis ending, a card appears during the ending that shows the Geth and the Quarians mingling together in harmony on a planet. While this could theoretically be any planet, the Quarian is clearly not wearing a mask.

That detail suggests that the Quarians have returned to their homeworlds, where they could more easily survive without their suits. Eventually, theoretically, their immune systems would recover and they'd be able to visit other planets without a suit.

3 Shepard's Paragon Vs Renegade Narration In "Control" Ending

If Shepard chooses the Control route to end Mass Effect 3, there are also two different versions of their narration. However, unlike Hackett, Shepard's narration isn't dependent on the EMS level since the player needs to accomplish such a high EMS to unlock the Synthesis ending in the first place.

Rather, it depends on whether Shepard was primarily a Paragon or Renegade. Understandably, a Paragon Shepard has very different intentions for their newfound powers than a Renegade Shepard would.

2 Whether Shepard Survived The "Destroy" Ending

Mass Effect 3 Destroy Ending

A player who chooses the Destroy ending expects Shepard to die - they are reasonably forewarned. Indeed this is true - assuming the player has a low EMS. In that case, the player's romanced companion places Shepard's name on the memorial wall, steps back, and is comforted by the other surviving party members.

However, if Shepard entered the final battle with a significantly high EMS, their romanced companion won't place the name on the memorial wall, only hold it and smile. In the final moments, a blink-or-you'll-miss-it moment, Shepard's armour is seen under the rubble, and the chest rises with a quick breath before cutting to black.

1 Buzz Aldrin As Stargazer

Mass Effect 3 Stargazer End-Credits Scene

"Stargazer" is the character that appears in the post-credit scene, where Shepard's exploits - and how they saved the galaxy and fought the war - are told to a small child by an adult. The only occasion where the Stargazer is female is when Shepard chooses to disobey the child and allows the cycle to continue.

In all other endings, Stargazer is male and fans may have recognized his voice without being able to place it. That would be because he is voiced by the famous American astronaut, Buzz Aldrin!
