Since the release of Mass Effect 3, fans of the space opera have been dying for a new entry to the series that is as good as the initial trilogy. Unfortunately, they've had to endure some subpar games by BioWare such as Mass Effect: Andromeda, which did not live up to the hype, and Anthem, their latest project that has been a massive flop.

Despite recent turmoil with company departures, BioWare generated some excitement earlier this month when they released a trailer to a new Mass Effect game during The Game Awards. Now, fans are digging deep into every detail to figure out what to expect in this new entry.

10 The First Shot

For those that watched the trailer in real-time, there probably wasn't much thought of what specifically was being shown at the very beginning. The first image fans will see once they hit play is a shot of both the Milky Way Galaxy and the Andromeda Galaxy. This has led to wide-spread speculation online if this means that the next Mass Effect will be a sequel to both 3 and Andromeda. There's no way to confirm this as of now, but if that is the case, fans who skipped the latest entry of the season may want to give it shot.

9 Historical Transmissions

As the "camera" in the trailer begins to transcend into the Milky Way Galaxy, fans will begin to hear different transmissions. The first two are noteworthy as they are pulled from real life, recordings from different eras. The first fans hear is "We know now that in the early years of the 20th century, this world was being watched." This is a quote from The War of the Worlds, a novel by H.G. Wells from 1938. The second transmission is "Rodger. Copy. Eagle, Houston. You’re go for landing. Over." These were the words of Charlie Duke communicating with Apollo 11 during the 1969 moon landing.

8 Other Transmissions

The camera continues to move deeper within the galaxy and the trailer then begins to play recordings in-game discussing events that happened in the world of Mass Effect's history. "Arcturus Station, unknown vessel approaching. Initiating first contact protocols" refers to the start of the war between Humans and Turians.

“Humanity now stands as partners of the galaxy,” refers to the end of said war and humans becoming allies to others. Then, fans may hear "Ark 6 is away. Godspeed." This may be a reference to the initiative to send Arks to the Andromeda Galaxy to combat any reaper concerns.

7 The Destroyed Relay

Watching the trailer in real-time not knowing its Mass Effect, the first stand-out clue is the destroyed piece of debris that flies toward the camera around the 40-second mark. Some may not have immediately identified it, but looking at it closely, it appears to be a destroyed relay. These relays are destroyed in some endings of the third game, and the shape can clearly be discerned here. In addition, there is a bunch of audio playing that isn't quite clear, but the indication of the moment indicates people communicating as a spaceship comes under attack or is malfunctioning.

6 Snow Planet & Reaper

The trailer finally shows the fans some life with a ship flying towards what is currently an unknown snowy planet. There is speculation online that the planet the rest of the trailer takes place on is actually Earth. However, there is no confirmation of this at this time despite some evidence out there. The next scene cuts to a figure climbing what appears to be a snowy mountain but is actually a dead reaper. If players look close enough at the background, they could see another downed reaper, indicating some sort of battle happened here for that to exist.

5 N7 Armor

This part is not-quite-hidden but the speculation behind it is not as front and center. The pivotal scene of the trailer is the figure, who fans still haven't seen clearly at this point in the video, detaches something from a helmet on the ground. After wiping away the snow, the N7 emblem is clearly seen. The speculation around this scene is that this is likely the armor of Commander Shepard and the figure has found their body or at least the armor they used to wear.

4 Liara

Liara's reveal in the 2020 Mass Effect Trailer

During this moment, fans finally get to see who was walking up the mountain this whole time. Liara T'Soni, the Asari researcher who has spent her life studying the Prothean technology and culture. One key detail that those may have missed is the detail of Liara's face and clothing.

By analyzing her facial lines, we can assume that Liara has aged hundreds of years since the events of Mass Effect. She is also wearing Matriarch clothes that her mother similarly wore in her older age.

3 Her Crewmates

The reveal of Liara certainly took away from two other interesting elements in the same shot. The first point of interest is the three figures standing outside of their ship after landing. It is not clear exactly who these individuals are, but some fans have at least figured out the race of these three individuals. While the figure on the left appears to be a Salarian, the other two could be up for interpretation. Some say the middle figure is either a Human, Quarian, or Prothean. The right figure could either be a Turian or a Krogan.

2 The Mudskipper

The other point of interest behind Liara is the ship that she and her crew came in on. It's a smaller ship that, if it is the ship players will be using, is a little bit more cramped than in the past. This ship is called the "Mudskipper," which is only known thanks to the art that was revealed earlier this year with the release of BioWare's 25th-anniversary book. Many speculated that this was only going to be included in the upcoming remaster of the trilogy, but its inclusion here means it may play a significant role in the plot.

1 Signs Of The True Ending

Commander Shepard during the final choice in Mass Effect 3

The question in everyone's mind about any further continuation of the story in Mass Effect is what will BioWare choose as the canonical ending to Mass Effect 3? The player had a choice between Destruction, Control, and Synthesis as the ending, each leading to different elements of the plot drastically differing from one another. Based on the destruction of the relays and the dead reapers, it would appear that the Destruction ending is canon. Liara also does not have green glowing eyes, which would indicate she has not been synthesized. None of this has been confirmed, but these details could help form that conclusion.
