Given the reception that the last Matrix film received, many of us were hoping for at least a solid 6/10 with the latest instalment, Resurrections. But it's hard to tell what everyone thinks of it, because the reviews are completely all over the place.

Reviews for The Matrix Resurrections range from high scores such as 70, 80, and 90 - to low figures of 40, 30, and even 25. While fans are only sitting down to watch the divisive film today as it premieres, it doesn't look like the critics are in agreement at all.

The reviews put Resurrections at an average score of 65 out of 100, a bit of a dip from the film that started it all in 1999. With an average score of 73, it's only really brought down by a handful of average reviews, and one negative score. Resurrections is only a few points ahead of the more poorly received The Matrix Reloaded - but it's at least nowhere near as bombed as the third film, Revolutions. Even after all this time, the last chapter in the initial trilogy has failed to find a place with critics and fans alike, still being received poorly.

On the flip side, the few that have had a chance to see Resurrections today seem to be much more in agreement. It sits at an aggregated score of 5.7 out of ten, so it's faring much worse on the whole. However, given that the top review lists "feminism" as its main crime, that might not be the best indication of what the film is actually like. God forbid there's a bit of politics in a Matrix film.

The Matrix Resurrections is in cinemas now. It reunites Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss for the first time since the 2003 sequels, reprising their roles of Neo and Trinity respectively. Jada Pinkett-Smith also returns as Niobe, but Yahya Abdul-Mateen II joins the cast as a younger-looking Morpheus, with Lawrence Fishburn reportedly not even asked to return for whatever reason.
