Opinions: everybody has them. We, as reviewers and general media writers at TheGamer, can only express how we feel about certain subjects. That may fall in line with other critics out there, or yourself for that matter, but everyone is different. I can site myself as a prime example. From time to time I see a lot of disagreement with my review scores on my YouTube channel, ReActionExaminer. I’m all for a good discussion, but it’s the comments that disagree with me vehemently that get me down. Am I wrong in these cases? No, because again we all have different personalities. A great example of how I can be categorized as being wrong is my feelings on the ever-growing battle royale genre.

I don’t find any of these games fun past a few matches since a lot of time is spent running around looking for gear only to get shot to start again. Time is precious to me and multiplayer in general bores me. In this case, again, I know I’m an outlier. So with that thought process in mind, I got an idea. What if I took a look at the user review aggregates on Metacritic and compared them to the media scores? I wanted to find the lowest scores possible for popular games to see the thought process on the other side. What I found in my research was truly surprising and also a bit nauseating. The things people can attack online are stunning. To counteract the negativity I also searched to see what fans think are the ten best games of all time.

30 Worst: Ghostbusters (0.4)

screenshot

For a comparison, media reviewers gave Ghostbusters a 32 for the Xbox One version. So by that score, they loved it next to fans. I would aim somewhat higher, but I didn’t like it either. I also think it’s a bad game, but nothing truly offensive. This came out around the film reboot and my theory is that fans were just ready to trounce on anything new related to Ghostbusters. That’s a just a theory, again, but can it be that far off from the truth?

29 Worst: Dragon Ball Evolution (0.9)

RedVGFox YouTube

For a comparison, media reviewers gave Dragon Ball Evolution a 28 on PSP. This is a really weird product that still baffles me to this day. It’s a game based on a movie based on an anime. There is plenty of terrible Dragon Ball fighting games out there, but this might be the worse since it recreates the likeness of the actors from the film. It’s a bad movie and an even worse game. There’s really not much else to say.

28 Best: The Witcher 3 (9.4)

screenshot

For a comparison, media reviewers gave The Witcher 3 a 93 for the PC version. That’s only one point off so I would call that a win for this list. Whether you were a fan of the previous two games, or a newcomer, like me, The Witcher 3 was an amazing experience.

Please be good to this series, Netflix.

The best thing about it was the side quests, which may sound odd, but the developers really put a lot of time into them. Sometimes they felt like main events.

27 Worst: Star Wars Battlefront II (0.9)

screenshot

For a comparison, media reviewers gave Star Wars Battlefront II a 66 for the Xbox One version. The gap between these two scores shows me how toxic and vengeful the community can get when they’re unsatisfied. Was it the loot boxes that broke the camel’s back, or did these people just feel like sticking it to EA? Personally, I was flabbergasted how badly the launch went, but I still thought it was an okay game. A score of 0.9 says to me that the game doesn’t even boot up.

26 Worst: Metal Gear Survive (1.2)

screenshot

For a comparison, media reviewers gave Metal Gear Survive a 54 for the PC version. The dislike for this game could also be attributed to fans attacking a company rather than reviewing the game itself. I’d be lying if I said the idea of Konami making a Metal Gear game after the bad breakup with Hideo Kojima didn’t make queasy, but I held out hope they could pull it together. At the start, I was surprised and had some fun, but it was short-lived.

25 Best: The Last Of Us (9.2)

screenshot

For a comparison, media reviewers gave The Last of Us a 95 for the PS3 version. This time the users gave a masterpiece a slightly lower score, but not by much. To me, this was the last best PS3 exclusive, which signaled the end for the console. And boy what a note to go out on.

I still cry thinking about that opening.

Zombie games had been done to heck and back by this point, but somehow Naughty Dog made us care again. Who knew bugs and parasites in real life could be so creepy?

24 Worst: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 (1.4)

GameSpot

For a comparison, media reviewers gave Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 a 32 for the PS4 version. Usually I would side with my fellow media critics on these reviews, but in this case, I lean more towards the fans. In fact, I think the aggregate score of 1.4 is too high. This game is a 0 for one important fact. If you bought the disc in a store, you couldn’t play it. You literally had to patch the game in order to have an actual playable build. If that’s not crooked I don’t know what is.

23 Worst: Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (1.9)

pocket-lint

For a comparison, media reviewers gave Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 a 70 for the Wii version. When I read that entry I had to do a double take. I had no idea there was a version for the Wii. I figured the controls weren’t good thus the low fan score, but the high media marks made me curious exactly what the problem was with fans. I didn’t read all 300 some comments, but the gist I got was that it was worse than modern consoles in terms of the online connectivity, graphics, and controls.

22 Best: Xenoblade Chronicles (9.2)

imdb

For a comparison, media reviewers gave Xenoblade Chronicles a 92 for the Wii version. You can’t get much better than striking evenly with the scores now can you? I’m glad both parties recognized this as the piece of art that I feel it is as well.

The Monado knows!

The only thing negative I can really say about Xenoblade Chronicles was that it was super expensive at launch as a GameStop exclusive. Other than that it’s the best RPG on Wii, no questions!

21 Worst: Battlefield V (2.0)

screenshot

For a comparison media reviewers gave Battlefield V a 73 for the PS4 version. Before even reading any user reviews, based on that aggregate, I theorized there was going to be a lot of bashing on EA. Ding ding ding! I was right. Look. The Battlefield series has never held much interest to me, as the focus tends to be on multiplayer. This time around fans felt the campaign made the multiplayer worse. That along with some other crazy stuff.

20 Worst: Umbrella Corps (2.1)

plati

For a comparison, media reviewers gave Umbrella Corps a 36 for the PC version. Both of those aggregates seem pretty good to me. The idea of a multiplayer game set in the Resident Evil universe has always interested me. Unfortunately, Capcom has yet to nail it and Umbrella Corps was the laziest release yet. Say what you will about Resident Evil 6, but at least the co-op was good. This was buggy to all heck. Did someone release the T-Virus on Steam?

19 Best: Vanquish (9.2)

ibtimes

For a comparison, media reviewers gave Vanquish an 84 for the Xbox 360 version. I was incredibly overjoyed to see this game get the respect it deserves.

Please make a Vanquish 2 Sega!

It’s not like 84 is bad, but 9.2 is closer to what I feel this one deserves. It’s such a unique concept for a cover shooter wherein you fight robotic aliens and power slide between cover stations, slowing down time. It is over the top, cheesy, and rad as heck.

18 Worst: The Quiet Man (2.2)

trustedreviews

For a comparison, media reviewers gave The Quiet Man a 29 for the PS4 version. With that, you can see both sides of the opinion are pretty identical. I’m actually surprised there was more held back by the fans this time around because as weird and hilariously broken as this game is, it’s also a rip-off. Yes, you can laugh at it with some buddies, but if you bought this you were buying a broken game. It’s an extremely weird Square Enix experiment.

17 Worst: Mortal Kombat Special Forces (2.4)

Emuparadise

For a comparison, media reviewers gave Mortal Kombat Special Forces a 28 on PS1. I can’t believe it took this long, but we finally have a retro game on the list. I honestly thought there would be more. Anyway, this game is another in a small line of Mortal Kombat spinoffs aiming to take the series into new genres. This was a 3D brawler starring Jax. I wish more fighting games would try this genre out like Street Fighter. The execution was just boring and repetitive.

16 Best: The Orange Box (9.2)

Reddit

For a comparison, media reviewers gave The Orange Box a 96 for the PC version. I said in the intro I was taking the top ten user reviews as they came up, but this is a slight exception. Just above this was Portal. Since that came in The Orange Box anyway I decided to look at this as a whole instead.

Portal was the best thing in this box.

I just wanted to clarify that. Anyway, what is there to say? All three series included were fantastic on both PC and consoles. This was a triumph.

15 Worst: Fallout 76 (2.4)

The Verge

For a comparison media reviewers gave Fallout 76 a 49 for the Xbox One version. Out of all three platforms, this version is the only one sitting in the red on Metacritic. Not that the PC and PS4 versions were much better. By all accounts, this was a bad launch. The idea of a Fallout kind of like Destiny sounded amazing, but it was simply rushed. Hasn’t anyone learned these things take time? I’m super interested to see how this game looks in a year though.

14 Worst: Persona 4 Arena Ultimax (2.6)

Atlus

For a comparison, media reviewers gave Persona 4 Arena Ultimax an 85 for the Xbox 360 version. Now, this was a shocker! I loved this game on PS3 and based on the media, it seems it was just as good on Xbox 360. This led me to reading the actual user comments again. Here is the weird thing, though. I could only access one review and it was positive. So Metacritic kept the scores, but deleted the comments for whatever reason. Were they that vile?

13 Best: God Hand (9.2)

gamersxtreme

For a comparison, media reviewers gave God Hand a 73 for the PS2 version. Personally, I would give this game a lower score. It has a zany concept and one of the best ending songs of all time, but it’s really rough around the edges.

A 9 in my heart and a 6 on paper.

Simply moving around and punching is like driving and aiming a tank. It will forever hold a special place in my heart, but at the end of the day, I know it’s mostly bad.

12 Worst: No Man’s Sky (2.8)

screenshot

For a comparison, media reviewers gave No Man’s Sky a 61 for the PC version. This was the first really great case for why video game reviews should change with time. There were other messy launches before this, but because No Man’s Sky was being praised like the second coming of Jesus, it was disappointing when the launch was less than what people had hoped for. By all accounts, it’s a lot better now, but it took a lot of time.

11 Worst: Fortnite (2.9)

Game Rant

For a comparison, media reviewers gave Fortnite an 81 for the PC version. Because the scores were so far apart I had to investigate the actual comments again. This time they were actually there. So from what I could gather people were not too happy with the original launch and messaging from Epic. It released as a paid game and Epic said it would be free later on. Plus there were lots of microtransactions, which is like a curse word in the gaming community. Remember, this was before they launched their Battle Royale mode. That’s when opinions changed.
