If you've played Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, then you may have acquired a nuclear missile at some point. You're given the option to create one at your Mother Base, and it's a good way to scare potential invaders from trying to storm your headquarters. But while building a nuke is good fun, the true objective of MGSV was for every player online to destroy their nuclear arms in order to bring about virtual world peace.

It was a lofty goal, and one that most players assumed was next to impossible. After all, who's going to toss away a WMD like a candy wrapper of their own accord? Not to mention that due to the high player counts on modern consoles and PC, it was wasn't very likely that everyone would band together to help bring about a world devoid of nukes.

But it did happen, thanks to the low player count of the PS3 version of the game. The number of active users on Playstation 3 was low enough that somehow, someway, everyone playing on Sony's last-gen console was able to join forces to rid themselves of such violent weaponry. It was truly a great moment in gaming history.

And then players just started building nukes again.

The video above shows the special cutscene that played when every last nuke in the PS3 edition of MGSV was decommissioned. It features Kazuhira Miller giving a big speech about how great the destruction of these bombs is while a monument is unveiled to commemorate the day. It then goes into some other details that make it pretty clear that Hideo Kojima really hates nuclear weapons.

Kojima must've been happy to see this huge undertaking come to fruition... then maybe a tad upset that people were just creating nukes all over again. According to a stat tracking site called MGSV Nuke Watcher, there are currently 56 nukes in the PS3 version. When compared to the 19,261 nukes on Steam and the 2489 nukes on Playstation 4, it doesn't seem like much. But it's still much more than zero, which means that this peaceful utopia barely lasted beyond a day or two.

Still, for a brief yet beautiful period, there was an armistice among the Metal Gear players on the Playstation 3. It didn't last long, but at least it happened. Hopefully, that's enough to bring a tear to the eye of Kojima while he's out there potentially making some horrific nightmare game with Junji Ito.
