UnMetal, the Metal Gear parody that has you play as a near-carbon copy of snake, has a release date. It also has a brand new trailer for folks to get a sense of this game’s retro-inspired tomfoolery.

It's clear right from the start what UnMetal is trying to do. Jesse Fox is about as close to Solid Snake as you can get without actually hiring David Hayter to be his voice actor. Fox is also a reference to Foxhound, the military operative group to which Snake belonged (and also the name Naked Snake's special ops team in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater).

But unlike Solid Snake, Jesse is not actually affiliated with any armed forces branch. He's just a guy accused of a crime he didn't commit who eventually escaped prison after stealing a Russian helicopter.

Gameplay is similar to the classic Metal Gear games from way back in the NES days, but with a few interesting additions. First, Jesse knows a fair bit of martial arts which he can unleash on guards, soldiers, and anything else that gets in his way. He's also particularly adept at using whatever he can find to accomplish his mission, whether that be toilet paper, a rusty wire, or even an eyepatch.

There’s also an enormous amount of narration going on in UnMetal. It’s not quite to the point where Jesse describes everything he does, but it’s close, and it definitely stands apart from the first Metal Gear games.

UnMetal is the product of Barcelona-based indie dev @unepic_fran, a solo developer whose past works include Ghost 1.0 and Unepic, a D&D-inspired Metroidvania. He's teamed up with indie publisher Versus Evil to bring UnMetal to Steam.

Showcased at E3's Guerilla Collective and Steam Next Fest, UnMetal has a demo available on Steam right now in case the trailer catches your fancy. The game itself arrives on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC via Steam on September 28.
