Metro 2033 was one of those games that didn't catch on nearly as fast as other franchises but has since grown massively in popularity. For those who have still not played the game, you can obtain it for free on PC on the Epic Games Store.

The Epic Games Store provides a brief synopsis of Metro 2033, saying that, in 2013, "the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland."

It elaborates that a "handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age."

Overall, the game does a great job of establishing a tone and atmosphere. The "Moscow underground," as it is described, shows humanity's attempt at living in a society at least somewhat resembling what came before. Some of the best moments in the game involve players exploring the surface, which is snowy and incredibly dangerous from the aftermath of the events preceding Metro 2033.

Earlier this year, controversy came when Metro Exodus was announced as a temporary Epic Games Store exclusive. Despite gamers' anger toward the decision from the publisher, Metro Exodus generated more revenue on the Epic Games Store than Metro: Last Light did on Steam. This must mean that the fans outraged toward the decision were at least somewhat overstated.

As for the latest release itself, Metro Exodus received an 82 on PC, according to Metacritic. While the game was fun, we stated in our Metro Exodus review that the game's immersion was slightly hampered by various bugs and technical issues, as well as the lack of Russian voices within the game.

With regards to Metro 2033 Redux, there is no excuse not to download the game at this point. For free, players can download a fun, immersive, apocalyptic, atmospheric adventure that combines exciting action with heightened tension. Metro 2033 Redux improves on the original in many ways. This includes improvements on the game's visual elements, as well as certain gameplay components that were made better in Metro: Last Light. Suffice it to say: there is no excuse not to download Metro 2033 Redux.
