A fan is remaking Metroid Fusion in Minecraft because you can make literally anything in Minecraft.

What haven’t we seen in Minecraft? Not much, to be honest. We’ve got Pirates of the Caribbean, Egyptian mythology, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and even Skyrim. You can build it all in Minecraft.

And now you can even build in two dimensions.

Reddit user NyuBug recently posted this video to the r/Minecraft subreddit. It starts off with what appears to be just regular old Metroid Fusion footage, but then the camera pans back to reveal that it's actually just a flat plane in Minecraft's creator mode.

It works by a 1024x1024 animated image that can store up to 256 64x64 sprites. So far it looks like the only sprite that's animated is Samus herself, but NyuBug is reportedly working on some custom AI to get enemies in there too.

For those unaware, Metroid Fusion originally came out in 2002 for the Gameboy Advance. At the time, it was hailed as the best Metroid game ever made and it still retains a special place in the Metroid hierarchy. Nintendo re-released the game in 2011 on the Nintendo 3DS, and again on the Wii U Virtual Console in 2014. No word on whether we’ll see yet another re-release for the Switch, but you know how Nintendo loves to make more cash off their back catalog.

Oh, and this footage? It's not just a video. The game is playable, according to NyuBug. "Currently, the system has a working smooth camera, player physics, sprite and background animations. I've tried to match the original game as close as possible."

Keep an eye on the Minecraft subreddit for updates. In the meantime, you might want to give another Nintendo Switch title a try in the form of Untitled Goose Game. Or in the case of the Minecraft version, Untitled Chicken Mod. It basically turns Minecraft into Untitled Goose Game, only this time you’re a chicken. No sense recreating the wheel when Minecraft already has a perfectly good chicken.
