Microsoft cuts ties with Brazilian YouTuber Mil Grau, who has repeatedly used his platform as a soapbox for racism and homophobia.

Public outcry regarding Grau’s incendiary comments and off-color ideology has been a topic of discussion for quite some time. As reported by 1v1Gaming, Reddit user The Era of Luigi has, ostensibly, been reporting Mil Grau’s account “for years.”

As public demonstrations erupt around the world in response to George Floyd’s murder, discussions such as the one regarding Mil Grau’s behavior have reached a tipping point. At the time of writing, Mil Grau - who has over 174,000 YouTube subscribers - is banned from Twitch, suspended from Twitter, banned from Facebook, and has had his YouTube channel demonetized.

Mil Grau’s fall from grace began with Xbox Brazil's public acknowledgement of the issue. “The content of the Mil Grau account does not reflect our fundamental values of respect, diversity, and inclusion. We already demanded the immediate removal of our brand from its channels,” tweeted the Microsoft-affiliated account on Tuesday.

The controversy then caught the attention of both YouTube and Twitch, who were quick to take action. YouTube shared a statement after moving to demonetize Mil Grau’s account: “With user complaints, we are aware of content on the XBOX Mil Grau Channel that violates our policies. The videos have been removed and the channel is permanently suspended from the YouTube Partner Program. We thank everyone who alerted us and reinforce our rejection of all forms of prejudice.”

Jubilation is underlying sentiment shared by the communities who have been pushing for the de-platforming of Mil Grau’s account, but some users say swifter action should have been taken.

The list of hateful statements and actions made by Mil Grau is not a short one, and each offense is equally as abhorrent as the last. As of recent, he’s thanked god that he’s white on stream and shared a meme in which two black men are seen burning a car on the left of the image while two white, Space X astronauts are flying to the moon on the right. The caption reads: “What white people are doing vs what black people are doing today.”

While the deplatforming of Grau comes as a relief to many, it begs the question: why was person spreading vitriol afforded an uninterrupted platform from which to share his ideas for so long? The global BLM movement seems like an awfully convenient time for the executives of Microsoft, Twitch or YouTube to have finally been "alerted" to his behaviour after having benefited from his work all this time. Only time will tell if this is the genuine start of a dedication to moderating their platforms or an advantageous PR move.
