NBA 2K20 is already 2019's best-selling video game following its release early last month.

Despite all of the complaints about 2K Sports' Microtransaction strategy, the title wasted very little time climbing to the top of the pack, unexpectedly beating Borderlands 3 as September's most bought game.

That is according to the NPD's list, the top 10 of which you could see below. The list isn't based on units sold, though, with the money the titles have brought in being the subject of consideration.

NBA 2K20 did not review very well ahead of its release and the launch was quite controversial in itself, yet here it is at the top of the charts.

We shouldn't be too surprised though. 2K made a move which has likely attracted more female players, adding all 12 WNBA teams, as well as the option to play an entire season with each one.

Even more so, though, is the fact the upcoming NBA season, which starts next Tuesday, is possibly the most anticipated in the history of the league. Contributing to that is the fact that Anthony Davis has teamed up with LeBron James in Los Angeles while Kawhi Leonard has joined forces with Paul George on the Clippers after leading the Toronto Raptors to their first championship last term.

Of course, there's also the Zion Williamson factor. The New Orleans Pelicans star is the most hyped rookie to grace the NBA since James did in 2003 and big things are expected.

There were also some other shock moves: the likes of Russell Westbrook to the Houston Rockets, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving signing with the Brooklyn Nets, Jimmy Butler leaving the Philadelphia 76ers for the Miami Heat, and Kemba Walker joining the Boston Celtics.

It looks set to be the most exciting NBA campaign in years and 2K Sports has really benefitted off of this. What a lucky bunch.
