Mike Myers voices Shrek for the first time in over a decade in his new Netflix show The Pentaverate
Aside from the Puss in Boots movies, it's been a long time since we've seen anything new from Shrek, despite it being one of the most successful animated series of all time. Even with a lack of anything new, Shrek has never been more popular, which has made Mike Myers' brief return to the character in his new Netflix show The Pentaverate even more special.
The Pentaverate is a spin-off of So I Married an Axe Murderer and it stars Mike Myers as Canadian journalist Ken Scarborough, who is trying to expose The Pentaverate, an evil society ran by characters that are all played by Mike Myers. Beyond the members of The Pentaverate is another of Myers' characters - Shrek.
During the fourth episode of the show, Scarborough can be seen running in a medieval town while being chased by a hairy big-foot monster called "the ogre of Dubrovnik". Just as it looks like the ogre is going to eat him, someone in a Shrek outfit pushes Scarborough aside and says, "I've got this one laddie. I'm the real ogre of Dubrovnik. Now get out of my swamp". Shrek then headbutts the ogre while "I'm A Believer" by Smash Mouth plays in the background.
This marks the first time that Mike Myers has voiced Shrek since Shrek's Yule Log back in 2010, which means that it's been a little longer than a decade since we've heard Shrek's original voice actor play the character. It's a sweet nod to the actor's most popular role and Shrek's status as a meme legend.
To be fair to Myers, it's not like he's had a role to return to - Shrek Forever After was viewed as the finale for the series for close to a decade, before development on a fifth movie that will reportedly act like a reboot began. That project has remained quiet for some time now, but we'll likely hear more after the upcoming Puss in Boots sequel.
