Villagers can be an important part of Minecraft. They serve as a convenient way to get new items, as well as providing experience so you can level up. To trade with villagers, they need to be near a job-site block; these blocks essentially dictate the villager's job.

Although villagers use these job-site blocks, you can too. Each job-site block has a specific use that may come in handy. In this guide, we are going to go over every job-site block, as well as what it does. Additionally, we will go over how to craft each one. First, let's take a look at the lectern.

Lectern

  • Associated Profession: Librarian
  • Building Materials:
    • 4 Wood Slabs
    • 1 Bookcase

Lecterns are podium-like objects where you can place books. In the image above, you can see an empty lectern. If you interact with it while holding a book, the book will be placed on the top section, in an open position.

This is helpful if you are playing in a multiplayer world with other people. Rather than passing around a book, players can just walk up to the lectern and read it.

Composter

  • Associated Profession: Farmer
  • Building Materials:
    • 7 Wood Slabs

Composters are often found near farmland areas of villages. Here, you can place any unwanted seeds and plants. Once the compost reaches the top, the seeds will produce one bonemeal that you can collect.

One bonemeal isn't that much, but if you connect a hopper and chest to the top of a composter, you can produce a steady amount of bonemeal. With another hopper attached to the bottom of the composter feeding into a chest, you can have a simple automated composter.

We use a composter in our guide for a bonemeal farm, don't forget to check it out.

Grindstone

  • Associated Profession: Weaponsmith
  • Building Materials:
    • 2 Wooden Planks
    • 2 Sticks
    • 1 Stone Slab

At a grindstone, you are able to repair and remove enchantments from any tools that you have. To do so, interact with the grindstone. Doing so will display a menu with three slots. Two of these slots will be inside an outline of the grindstone.

Place two tools that you want to combine here. The tools need to be of the same type; for example, you can place two diamond pickaxes here.

Once placed, you will see a new tool appear in the third slot. This tool will be at full durability, however, all the enchantments will be gone. Grindstones are a great way to remove any unwanted enchantment, and essentially make your tool brand new.

Blast Furnace

  • Associated Profession: Armorer
  • Building Materials:
    • 1 Furnace
    • 3 Smooth Stone
    • 5 Iron Ingot

Blast furnaces are similar to regular furnaces. While a normal furnace smelts/cooks everything equally, a blast furnace smelts ore and raw metals at twice the speed. Additionally, you are able to place iron, gold, and chainmail armor inside the smelter to receive an iron or gold nugget.

To use this job-site block, just add your chosen material along with a fuel source (like coal).

Smoker

  • Associated Profession: Butcher
  • Building Materials:
    • 4 Logs
    • 1 Furnace

This is the food counterpart of a blast furnace. With a smoker, you can cook any food item twice as fast. To use it, just add your uncooked food and a fuel source.

Fletching Table

  • Associated Profession: Fletcher
  • Building Materials:
    • 2 Flint
    • 4 Wooden Planks

This is the only block with no function outside of a villager's profession. The only reason you will need to make this block is for a villager (or decoration).

Cartography Table

  • Associated Profession: Cartographer
  • Building Materials:
    • 4 Wooden Planks
    • 2 Paper

At a cartography table, you are able to create and duplicate maps, as well as zoom out and lock the map.

The cartography table has two slots, allowing you to place two items. Let's take a quick look at how to use a cartography table below.

Brewing Stand

  • Associated Profession: Cleric

Brewing stands are an important job-site block for creating potions. Making potions is a complex process, so be sure to check out this complete guide to making potions.

Smithing Table

  • Associated Profession: Toolsmith
  • Building Materials:
    • 2 Iron Ingot
    • 4 Wooden Planks

At a smithing table, you are able to upgrade diamond tools and armor into netherite. To do this, head to a smithing table and right-click.

A panel will appear; place your tool on the left with the netherite ingot on the right. Doing so will generate a netherite version of the tool that was placed. Any enchantments will apply to the new netherite tool.

This is a great way to upgrade gear, however, you will need to have enough netherite to do so. One netherite ingot consists of four ancient debris, which can be hard to find. Be sure to check out our guide on how to efficiently mine for ancient debris.

Cauldron

  • Associated Profession: Leatherworker
  • Building Materials:
    • 7 Iron Ingot

Although cauldrons are associated with the leatherworker profession, you cannot use leather at this job-site block.

The cauldron is pretty simple; it will hold and collect water, snow, and lava. If you are holding a bucket or one of these materials, you can fill a cauldron by right-clicking on it while holding the bucket. If a cauldron is placed outside while it is either snowing or raining, it will fill up with water or snow as well.

Cauldrons can also collect liquids from dripstones. To do this, you will need your cauldron to be placed directly under the dripstone. Above the dropstone, place either water or lava. The dripstone will slowly drip the liquid, filling the cauldron.

Barrel

  • Associated Profession: Fisherman
  • Building Materials:
    • 2 Wood Slabs
    • 6 Wooden Planks

Barrels are storage spaces. Similar to chests, you can place items inside of one. A barrel has 27 storage slots and can be accessed even if there is another block on top of it.

Loom

  • Associated Profession: Shepherd
  • Building Materials:
    • 2 Wooden Planks
    • 2 String

At a loom, you can place patterns on banners to create unique designs. When you right-click on a loom, you will see a few different icons. On the lefthand side of the panel, you can place your banner, as well as dye and a banner pattern. The pattern is optional if you want to use one of the default designs.

In the center, you can pick the design that you want. There are several default designs to choose from. A preview of the banner will be displayed on the right of the screen. Under the preview, your banner will be ready to grab. Once you grab the banner, the design will be locked in.

Afterward, you can place the banner on the lefthand side again, allowing you to stack a new pattern on top.

Stonecutter

  • Associated Profession: Mason
  • Building Materials:
    • 4 Stone
    • 1 Iron Ingot

Lastly, we have the stonecutter. Stonecutters allow you to craft with stone-related blocks in precise quantities.

For example, to craft stone stairs at a crafting table, you need at least six stone blocks. Crafting with these blocks will result in four stone stairs. With a stonecutter, you can turn one stone block into one stone stair. Overall, you are conserving the number of blocks used, as well as crafting a precise amount of stairs.

Any stone-type block can be used at the stonecutter. These are essentially blocks that can be mined with a pickaxe, ranging from cobblestone and deepslate to basalt and prismarine.

That's every job-site block. Be sure to craft these blocks for your village, as well as for your own base.
