Enchantments are a powerful tool in Minecraft to give yourself a bit more strength and ability to survive in the wilds against mobs. One of the best enchantments in the game is called Mending, which is a rare enchantment that allows you to repair your enchanted item with experience orbs rather than placing it on the anvil and using diamonds to fix it.

Due to how powerful it is, Mending is difficult to get your hands on, but if you've been playing for a while and would like to make sure your armor stays in shape, it's definitely worthwhile getting. Here are 10 helpful tips when it comes to Mending.

10 Why Mending Is The Best

In case you didn't already know, Mending is an enchantment that allows you to refill the enchanted item's durability bar using experience orbs. Normally, you would have to repair an enchanted item by combining it with its core material at an anvil. For example, if you have a diamond sword that's enchanted, you can repair its durability by combining it with diamonds at your anvil.

However, depending on how often you do this and how expensive your enchantments are on it, you'll need a ton of diamonds. This is why Mending is better because you save on your resources and restore durability with experience points instead.

9 Treasure Enchantment

Most enchantments in Minecraft are considered level-dependent, meaning you can't actually get them at the enchanting table unless you have enough levels to pay for them. With 30 being the highest level required for the best enchantments, it's always better to wait until then.

Mending, however, isn't an enchantment you can get at the enchanting table. It's actually considered a "treasure enchantment", meaning it can only be found in enchanted books in various locations around the world. This is why it's such a rare and powerful item to have in your inventory.

8 Incompatibilities

Let's say that you do have an enchanted book with Mending on it and you'd like to put it on a tool that you already have. Usually, you can combine Mending with just about any tool or piece of armor, even the Trident and Elytra, which are both fairly good items to put Mending on since their repair costs are high or they cannot otherwise be repaired.

However, keep in mind that Mending cannot be combined with a bow that has Infinity. Although that would make the ultimate weapon, it's a bit too overpowered according to the developers, hence why it's unattainable in survival.

7 Enchanting With Mending

So once you do find yourself a book with Mending on it, you'll want to pick a piece of armor or a tool that you want to use it on. Pick carefully, because it's a very expensive enchantment and hard to come by again, and make sure you use it on a tool or piece of gear that's made of diamond to reap all the benefits.

In order to attach Mending to a tool or piece of armor, combine both the book and the tool or armor in question at an anvil. You'll need plenty of iron to build an anvil, but it's definitely a worthy investment.

6 Fishing

One of the first ways in which you can find a Mending book is to go fishing. With a regular, unenchanted fishing rod you'll probably be sitting around for a while unless you get extremely lucky. In order to up your chances of getting an enchanted book, you need to enchant your fishing rod.

We recommend two handy enchantments for your fishing rod: Unbreaking III and Luck of the Sea III. The former will ensure your rod's durability will deplete slower, and the latter will increase your chances of finding treasures like enchanted books while fishing.

5 Chests

Another method is to simply go out there and explore various locations like dungeons, mineshafts, End Cities and the like. These areas will always have a chance of carrying some enchanted books, although the chance of finding Mending specifically will be fairly low.

Your best bet is to try and find desert temples, which have four chests underneath their bottom floor. There's a decent chance that at least one of the chests will have an enchanted book, so head over to your closest desert biome and start looking.

4 Trading

If you're looking for a more efficient method, but which requires some planning and farming, trading is a solid option. You might be lucky enough to wander into a village and find a villager with a Mending trade, but usually, you need to trade with them first to unlock better trade items.

You can also start what's called a villager farm, which will supply you with a mass of newly generated villagers, which you can then trade with until you find someone with Mending. In terms of likelihood, this is probably the best method, even if it takes some grinding.

3 Raids

If you're close to a village, there's a chance that it will at some point become the target of a raid by Illagers. Although your first instinct might be to run away, fighting is actually better due to the rewards you can get from battling against the raiders.

If you're lucky enough, the Illagers have a chance of dropping enchanted books as a reward, although this isn't the most efficient method, nor is it highly likely to happen. Most of it is highly luck-dependent.

2 Vindicators

A final location where you might sometimes stumble across a Mending book is a Woodland Mansion. These structures tend to be thousands of blocks away, however, and spawn very rarely, making them not exactly the best spot to find your Mending book.

In case you do find a Woodland Mansion, you'll be happy to know that the Vindicators occasionally drop enchanted books when you kill them. Moreover, these books have a chance of being high-level enchantments like Mending, so it's always worth a shot.

1 Importance Of XP Farms

Once you finally do have your gear and your weapons enchanted with Mending, you need to ensure that you have a steady flow of experience points to replenish their durability meters. The best way to do this is to build XP farms.

In order to replenish a tool, make sure you're holding it in your right or left hand while absorbing experience points. Until your tools are fixed, you won't be able to gain any of the experience yourself, so keep that in mind as well.
