Each Minecraft seed generates an (almost) endless world for you to explore, with every block configuration to infinity and beyond. But that's boring, so let's go to another world. Vanilla Minecraft has two alternative dimensions to (almost) endlessly explore -the Nether and the End, which hangs above the Void. However, once you've flown over one End Island, you've flown over them all, and it's time to install some modifications.

There are plenty of mods that incorporate alternate worlds accessible only through portals or rituals, or even an unsuspecting door standing alone. Most of them are pretty wacky, defying the usual laws of physics and biology, but that means new loot to hunt down too.

Updated on September 21, 2023, by Rosa Baumgartl: As the Minecraft community grows, so do the talented individuals who create mods for our enjoyment. And who doesn't love exploring whole new worlds and dimensions?

There are hundreds of modifications, enough to suit every playstyle and server size. We've included a few more to diversify the kinds of dimensions you can visit, while also removing some mods that haven't been updated for a while, and so, aren't compatible with the latest Minecraft release.

10 Advanced Mining Dimension

Minecraft Mining Diamonds Underground In A cave With Lava Holding Torches

For some of us, Minecraft is simply a way to zone out and explore, while stockpiling precious minerals and coming across amazing world gen. As the game has developed, so too has the joy of simply mining, and the Advanced Mining Dimension is a brilliant place to take advantage of it without depleting the resources close to your base.

If the name doesn't clear things up for you, it really is just an entire dimension made up of twisting caves, ore-rich ravines, and impressive underground systems. The latest release is on 1.19.2 and includes the Cliffs and Caves update. To access this miner's delight, simply craft a teleporter out of a Stone Pickaxe and some Wood.

9 Extra Planets

Minecraft Extra Planets Mod

Mining isn't the be-all and end-all of Minecraft though, as Extra Planets proves. Bring up your intergalactic map by pressing 'M' and scroll through the moons and planets of the universe, highlighting important information about each one, including resources and radiation levels.

Build space stations as outposts, as well as rockets and other vehicles in which to explore these alien surfaces. Discover the unique traits of each planetary body, including the pressure, temperature, and length of the day. Improve your space suit to stay safe and meet the locals, or even the things that lurk beneath.

8 Deeper And Darker

Minecraft Deeper And Darker Mod With Warden Armor

With the release of the Deep Dark in 1.19, we found ourselves in the ancient lost city deep beneath the mountains, guarded by a terrifying creature that hunts by smell. Plenty of players had theories about who built these structures, and where the giant portals led to. Deeper and Darker aims to explore what our imaginations have conjured up.

To travel to the Otherside, you'll need to activate the center portal found in vanilla cities. But to see anything when you get there, you'll first need to defeat the Warden, who now drops vital loot such as the Warden Carapace, granting necessary night vision. The mod adds plenty of other items, such as Netherite armor upgrades, building blocks, and Sculk Transmitters. Look out for the Ancient Temple, as that's where the best loot, and scariest mobs, reside.

7 The Bumblezone

Minecraft Bumblezone Dimension Mod Bumblebee Bee Flying Honey Block

Everyone loves bees. They're not necessarily what players had imagined when the Mojang team announced their arrival, as they're certainly very large and blocky, but you can't deny how cute they are. For those of us who just can't get enough of their fuzzy butts and big blue eyes, you can visit an entire dimension within their hives, the Bumblezone. Obviously, destroying any blocks or hitting a bee will enrage any nearby.

Angering these little guys is a bad idea, as even full diamond armor won't hold them back. Luckily, all the loot here is bee-themed, and an armor set with flight can be uncovered from mazes hidden around. If you bee-friend some inhabitants, you can hold them in a bee cannon, ready to shoot at mobs to spread the bees' wrath. There are even three new enchants for weapons, and Bane of Arthropods is actually useful now.

6 Blue Skies

Minecraft Blue Skies Dimension Mod Snowy Portal

If you stumble across the Gatekeeper residing in a small village in your vanilla world, you've unlocked the chance to travel to the Blue Skies. Everbright and Everdawn are beautiful worlds, one cold and snowy, the other warm and tropical. Both are inhabited by new flora and fauna, and littered with devastating dungeons. Massive labyrinths with hidden keys and multiple floors must be cracked to reach the bosses.

And each realm has its own respective guardian, hidden away in a tall tower, ready to be challenged. The mod expects you to arrive with friends and mid-tier setups, but can be configured if you plan to try alone. There are new ores, blocks, achievements, and two new dimensions in this one mod.

5 The Aether

Minecraft Aether II Mod

This realm is the opposite of the Nether, being out in the open, on all sides, with a blue and green color palette. You'll need to have a way to fly, or else it's going to be a lot of precarious bridging out here, so pick up an Elytra first, or keep an eye out for Moa nests to hatch your own steed.

Overworld tools are pretty useless up here, so you'll have to start from scratch making Holystone Pickaxes after punching Skytrees. The different types of clouds produce different effects as well, some being bouncy, while Gold clouds will throw you towards Terra Firma at an alarming rate. With three tiers of dungeon to fight through, each with its own bosses and mobs, and the chance for enemies to drop presents and useful accessories, there are plenty of reasons to travel to the Aether.

4 Dimensional Doors

Minecraft Dimensional Doors Dimension Mod In The Void Stone Bricks

You come across a lone door. It's standing on an otherwise empty beach with no building to guard. If you dare to enter you'll be transported to an alternate dimension, made up of confusing designs and nonsensical structures. It's possible to craft your own Dimension Doors - Iron and Quartz will always open up into an empty void, ready for you to build whatever you please.

However, a Gold Door contains treasure and challenging traps to work through, as well as other doors that will often lead even deeper into these twisted dungeons. You might be tempted to simply break a few blocks and skip ahead to the goodies, but these realms are guarded by Monoliths, ancient beings able to teleport anyone to limbo. Crafting your own Rift Blade will fling enemies away from you, back into the void from which they came.

3 Twilight Forest

MMinecraft Twilight Forest Dimension Mod Castle Boss Tower

Hop through a puddle to enter the Twilight Forest, a generally peaceful dimension of giant trees, fireflies, and deer. Hostile mobs won't spawn outside of dungeons, and the air is filled with dusk's insects. Wandering through this magical woodland, you'll come across mazes and strange arenas, each only accessible as you progress through the boss structures.

Defeat the Naga to begin your questing, eventually battling a Lich, Snow Queen, and an unsettling giant reflection of yourself. However, if that's not your style, there are still tens of mystical biomes and exciting structures to explore, all bearing a sense of whimsy.

2 The Undergarden

Minecraft Undergarden Dimension Forest Cave Mod

A world being overrun by Rotspawn, an insidious blight from the Otherside that infects blocks and spawns strange enemies. The Undergarden is made up of 12 biomes, mostly forests, and oceans, but also swamps and caverns, with unique and well-designed mobs living in each. There are even neutral Piglin-like entities called Stoneborn that you can trade with. Most trades involve the ore Regalium which can be mined here.

This dense and lush dimension has one mini-boss, the Forgotten Guardian, a teal rock golem that drops Forgotten Nuggets upon death. There are wonderful aquatic mobs swimming in the murky oceans and strange vegetation to discover.

1 The Lost Cities

Minecraft Lost Cities Dimension Mod Jungle Biome Overgrown Road Buildings

This dimension comes with its own sad backstory; the races of the Trinkets and Baubles mod became infected by parasites, leaving their treasures behind in their homes in the hopes an adventurer would be able to save them. Arriving in the Lost Cities, you'll be surrounded by tall skyscrapers and subway platforms, suddenly in the 21st century, but with hoards of infected monsters infesting the haunted buildings.

Skirt around enemies from Lycanite, Familiar Fauna, and Vanilla Minecraft to find a variety of loot, ranging from Bread and Feathers, to Nether Stars and Ancient Tomes. Don't bother bringing a Summoning Staff though, as pets and familiars won't help you here. And dying won't get you out, only finding the materials for another portal can get you back home.
