Just imagine: You finally surface from a three-hour expedition searching for diamonds in the underground mineshaft. And upon entering your humble abode, it starts to rain. Sitting by the cozy fire of your furnace, the twinkling piano of Minecraft's background music hits your ear and you start to feel lonely.
Unable to bear the loneliness, you decide to find yourself a friend. A pal to eagerly greet you whenever you step through your front door. Whether it be a cat, dog, or even a skeleton horse, this guide will help you tame Minecraft's wild animals to add to the family.
9 Dog
Technically you'll be getting a pet wolf but hey, all dogs are just domesticated wolves, right? Though, who knows why anyone would ever settle for a pet dog since a "pet wolf" generally sounds more epic.
When taming animals in Minecraft, half the battle is sometimes knowing where to look. For wolves, you'll find them in either forests, or any of the taiga biomes (whether regular, great tree or a snowy taiga). Though, some prep work since you need to feed wolves bones (from naturally generated chests, killing skeletons, or fishing) to tame them. Feeding a wolf a bone gives players a 1/3 chance of taming it. You'll know they're tamed when they emit hearts and a red collar appears around their neck.
8 Ocelot/Cat
Beware: Whether it be your bed, your chests, or your furnaces, prepare to lose control of your home once you tame a cat. On the plus side, at least they keep creepers away.
Players can find black cats either in a witch's hut (in the swamp), or stray cats in villages, with one cat spawning for every one villager and four beds. Truly living up to their "scaredy cat" title, any sudden movements startle the poor things. Therefore, players must be careful and patient, and must sneak towards the cat and feed it raw cod or salmon (from fishing, preferably in the rain) while maintaining eye contact. Raw fish gives players a 1/3 chance of taming it and like with dogs, hearts will come out and a collar will appear once successfully tamed.
7 Horse
There are two ways to go about obtaining a horse: The criminal way, or the natural way.
If you're feeling criminal, you can steal a horse from the pen or stables found in villages. Otherwise, you can find them wandering in herds of 2-6 in plains or savannas. Wherever you get your horse, the same process. Unlike dogs or cats in which players feed them to gain their trust, players must use the Temper method for horses. When a horse spawns, it's given a set Temper number. Taming a horse requires attempting to ride it in which a random number from 0-100 will generate. If the number is below the horse's Temper, it will be tamed. To make the process easier, player can either be persistent since the Temper increases by +5 every time they're bucked off, or you can feed it. Sugar, wheat, and apple increase the Temper by +3, golden carrots by +5, and golden apple by +10.
6 Skeleton Horse
Ready your swords because when there's a skeleton horse, that usually means there are skeleton horsemen around.
Majority of the trouble of taming a skeleton horse is finding one to begin with. After all, skeleton horses can only be summoned via skeleton traps which is the off-chance lightning hits a horse and produces four skeleton horsemen riding skeleton horses. But even then, this only yields a 0.75%-6.75% chance of naturally occurring depending on the difficulty of the region. But if you do manage to see a skeleton horse, all you need to do is kill its horseman and take claim of his mighty steed.
5 Donkey
If you want to make like Shrek and get yourself a donkey bestie, then you've come to the right place. At least, as long as you're not expecting one that's annoying yet strangely endearing.
No need to learn anything new because donkeys can be tamed in the exact same way horses are tamed. Ride them and hopefully get a lower Temper number or increase it to make the job easier. Though, taming a donkey does come with different benefits. As the true carrier of the "beast of burden" title, players can attach chests to donkeys, making them a cute rideable backpack.
4 Mule
Oddly enough, the first step to gaining a mule is to get a mule. Not able to spawn naturally, players will have just to play god and make a baby miracle happen between a horse daddy and a donkey mommy.
To first breed a mule, just feed a horse and a donkey either a golden carrot or a golden apple, activating their love mode. Though just because you instigated a mule's birth doesn't mean they'll immediately trust you. Instead, you have to follow the Temper method, following the same process and foods as with its parents. With the carrying capacity of a donkey and the speed of its horse parent, taming a mule really gives you the best of both worlds.
3 Llama
Adorable with their pointy ears and scrunch up faces, you too can have your very own llama. Found either in the savanna or the mountain biome in herds of 4-6, you can also just kill a wandering traveler who randomly shows up with two llamas. Regardless or where you choose to get them from, llamas also follow the Temper method.
While persistence works just as well, you can also feed it. However, unlike the other hooved tame-ables, llamas have more raw tastes with wheat (+3 to Temper) or a haybale (+6). That said, riding it even after tamed doesn't mean you can control it so to really get anywhere, you'd have to use a leash and walk on foot. But hey, not only would you have the cutest backpacks once you attach chests to it, but with enough of them, you can create an army of spitting turrets.
2 Parrot
If you're looking for a colorful friend to add to the family then parrots are the one for you. Only found in the jungle, make sure to bring some seeds with you if ever you find yourself in the biome. Taming parrots follow the same 1/3 chances with feeding them but instead, players need to use either melon seeds, pumpkin seeds, beetroot seeds (all which can be gained from the respective fruit), or you can just punch some grass for wheat seeds.
Although useless in the regards to gameplay, parrots are certainly fun and quirky to have around. Not only do they dance to jukeboxes with CDs inside, but they also mimic sounds in the environment. So if ever you hear a hissing creeper but get no boom that's probably just Polly messing with you.
1 Fox
Much like their wolf brethren, you can also find foxes in the taiga biomes. However, while mostly orange, all foxes in snowy taigas appear as white. Now, although you know where to get them, taming them is not as simple. Instead of gaining their trust with food, getting a pet fox in Minecraft is closer to kidnapping naïve newborns than it is actually taming.
Skittish like cats, you must slowly sneak up on two foxes and feed them sweet berries. Doing so will force the two to make love, produce a baby and that baby immediately trusts the player. However, since they also follow adult foxes, you must leash them to prevent them from running off with their parents and then you can walk them home.
