Is your Minecraft looking a little bit dull and boring? Why not spruce it up with a new fancy texture pack that can turn your old wooden house into a modern, sleek, contemporary home. Texture packs can even be used to turn Minecraft into a Martha Stewart simulator - or at least the closest thing to it.

While there is the option to create your own texture pack – whether it is a mash up of your favorite packs or simply with your own art – many players choose to use the easier method of downloading texture packs that are available online. The best thing about texture packs is that fact that you can significantly alter how you wish your game to look based on your particular tastes. Before you begin downloading any texture packs though, be sure to download MCPatcher as it will allow you to run HD textures – which most texture packs now support - within the game.

Having released in 2011, Minecraft has taken the gaming world by storm with over 122 million downloads across all platforms – it is safe to say that Minecraft is one of biggest selling games in the world. Mojang – the developers of Minecraft – have even revealed, that over 55 million players are logging into the game on a regular basis each month – that’s a lot of players potentially looking for a new texture pack for their game. With a list that ranges from cartoony textures to ultra-sleek modern designs, here are the 10 best and 10 worst texture packs currently available for Minecraft.

Updated on July 5th, 2021 by Anastasia Maillot: Minecraft is still going strong even ten years after its release, despite a relatively simple concept. There's just something incredibly charming about its mechanics and features, which constantly pulls players back. It also helps that the game is incredibly customizable thanks to mods and resource packs.

With the community coming up with new texture packs and ideas all the time to enhance the game even further, texture packs are in abundance. Some are absolute hits, and others fall short or age poorly as technology and demands improve.

20 The Worst: The Cursed Pack

Minecraft Cursed Resource Pack

Minecraft's popularity stems from the fact that you can easily recognize familiar mobs and blocks with one glance. Everyone's familiar with the classic Creeper or tall Enderman, which is why this Cursed Resource Pack hurts your eyes so much. Everything is simply wrong, or reversed in the worst way possible.

Without spoiling too much of the funny yet disturbing contents of the Cursed Pack, it essentially changes many of the mob textures with one another. For example, spiders will now have a Creeper texture, while turtles will have the Enderman texture.

19 The Best: FaithfulVenom

Minecraft AntVenoms Faithful

True Minecraft fans will remember the haydays of the game, with many of its most popular content creators. One of the best known Minecraft YouTubers of the early days was AntVenom, who arguably helped to make Minecraft the immensely popular game that it is today. This screenshot is courtesy of texture-packs.com.

As an ode to the old and good days of Minecraft and dedicated to the fans who have stuck around since the game was first released, AntVenom created the FaithfulVenom texture pack. This pack is a real blast from the past, staying true to Minecraft's original textures with slight HD modifications. The real treat, however, is the collection of all sounds such as walking on sand, water sounds and door sounds.

18 The Worst: Made In MS Paint

Minecraft Made In MS Paint Texture Pack

It might not occur to a lot of players but it's actually pretty easy for anyone to make a texture pack. However, it's clear that not everyone should make a texture pack and share it with the rest of the world, because some of these results look absolutely chaotic and strange.

This texture pack in particular is considered by its creator one of the worst texture packs in the game, and for good reason. All the textures were made in none other than MS Paint, which is pretty evident seeing how simplistic and messy the blocks are. At least the blocks are still somewhat recognizable.

17 The Best: Faithless

Minecraft Faithless By Stitch

Fans of retro games and RPGs will appreciate this gorgeous and still pretty new texture pack that's incomplete as of 2021. Despite its incomplete status, however, the Faithless texture pack by Stitch is vibrant, detailed and taps into something that gives a warm and fuzzy feeling to any classic retro gaming fan.

The textures are very detailed yet cartoonish at the same time. They almost remind you of a fantasy RPG from the 90s, but just much better and more detailed. It almost has a strange and adorable resemblance to Stardew Valley's style, which is that quintessential RPG Maker look.

16 The Worst: Nicolas Cage Resource Pack

Minecraft Nicolas Cage Resource Pack

Some texture packs just seem to have no rhyme or reason to their existence, and the Nicolas Cage resource pack is definitely one of them. Although the creator does specify that this is a joke and is just meant for fun and prank purposes, one has to wonder where the inspiration for something as crazy as this comes from.

As the name implies, everything has the face of Nicolas Cage in this resource pack. He's absolutely everywhere in your Minecraft world now, which, as the creator Yeshuabro states, just might make you go insane as you try to enjoy your Minecraft experience.

15 The Best: Annahstas Beastrinia (Pokémon Texture Pack)

Minecraft Annahstas Beastrinia

The Annahstas Beastrinia resource pack mashes two of the world’s most popular games together – Minecraft and Pokémon. After many failed attempts of trying to source a decent Pokémon texture pack for the popular Pixelmon mod, the creator - Artisan Princess - decided to take matters into her own hands.

If you are in the market for a new texture pack, it is without question that the Annahstas Beastrinia resource pack is one of the most beautiful texture packs. What gives this texture pack so much beauty is the simple fact that Artisan Princess has ensured that each block is easily recognizable to vanilla Minecraft players. The simplicity of this texture pack - while still staying true to Pokémon – is what really makes it shine.

14 The Worst: Angry Birds Resource Pack

Minecraft Angry Birds Texture Pack

The whole world is familiar with the classic mobile game, Angry Birds. So it comes as no surprise to find that someone has dedicated their time to creating an Angry Birds texture pack for Minecraft. This particular texture pack will shock you, because other than the Angry Birds characters making an appearance on a few selected blocks, the texture pack shows no other resemblance to the mobile game.

When you think of Angry Birds, you imagine bright, vibrant maps and colorful items – not dark blue dirt and mint colored grass. There really is no other way to put this, but this texture pack is just a miss.

13 The Best: White Architecture Pack

Minecraft White Architecture Pack

The White Architecture resource pack transforms Minecraft into what looks like a completely different game. Cube_Studio wanted to create a texture pack that looked as if you were viewing an architectural drawing. With the help from nearly all white textures (with the exception of a few colored blocks), OptiFine and Sildur’s Shaders, Cube_Studio was able to create this ultra-modern and sleek design. With all the features put together, you would think you were playing some kind of modern, almost sci-fi looking indie game.

In addition to the texture changes, a number of special 3D models have been included in the resource pack such as book stacks, table legs, vertical slabs, and even roller blinds. It's still among the most unique Minecraft texture pack available.

12 The Worst: CraftBoy Resource Pack

Minecraft Craftboy Resource Pack

You’re probably wondering why the CraftBoy resource pack is listed as one of the worst Minecraft texture packs. It ultimately came down to just one factor that was repeatedly an issue – its color. While the CraftBoy resource pack brings something new and unique, its constant four shades of green make it tiresome and bland. The resource pack essentially makes you feel as if you are trapped in one specific area that you cannot escape.

That being said, the CraftBoy resource pack looks fantastic and the creator – Maligree – did a great job at conveying a sci-fi feeling environment. But, the constant green atmosphere quickly becomes over-used and rather boring which eventually makes you want to change to another resource pack.

11 The Best: Xray Ultimate

Minecraft Xray Ultimate

The Xray Ultimate resource pack won’t be winning awards anytime soon for its beauty - but that isn’t what it was intended for. The resource pack is actually designed to be used as a method of locating ores and other rare minerals that are hidden deep under the ground – also known as cheating.

If you do find yourself downloading this texture pack, be sure to use it with OptiFine for the extra night vision effect. It should also be noted that if you do not want to use this texture pack all the time, the invisible blocks can be toggled off. Using this texture pack on multiplayer survival servers is absolutely against most server rules, so it's highly recommended you just use it in your own private Minecraft worlds.

10 The Worst: Martha Stewart Resource Pack

Minecraft Martha Stewart Texture Pack

Sometimes you can have a little too much Martha Stewart in your life. Just when you thought you had seen everything, Johnknee2010 – the creator of the texture pack – decided to reincarnate Martha Stewart into Minecraft and it is truly as glorious as it sounds.

This texture pack changes the GUI of your furnace and crafting table, the moon, paintings, and even the block breaking texture as it now becomes an image of Martha’s face. The creator states that the texture pack was heavily inspired by Matt Damon Craft – a resource pack that has since been taken down.

While the texture pack may be one of the worse resource packs in Minecraft, it is hilarious and will definitely give you and your friends a few good laughs. So if you have a friend or family member that is lacking a little bit of Martha Stewart in their lives, just set them up with this texture pack.

9 The Best: Adventure Craft

Minecraft Adventure Craft Texture Pack

Adventure Craft – created by InnovationNation – is among the most popular texture packs even years later. The realistic style – while also maintaining the resemblance to default Minecraft – is what really makes people fall in love with this resource pack. This texture pack looks unbelievably beautiful.

While no shaders are required for this texture pack, it is recommended to use OptiFine and Sonic Ether’s Unbelievable Shader to get the most out of the Adventure Craft texture pack, and to get that insanely realistic look.

8 The Worst: Green Hill Pack

Minecraft Green Hill Texture Pack

The key to creating a great texture pack for Minecraft is to ensure that the game's core essence isn’t lost while using the new texture. Since each block – given its theme – should still show some resemblance to Minecraft’s default textures. The reason why it needs to show some resemblance is purely because people do not like change as they have become accustomed to what each block within Minecraft is supposed to look like.

Now, this is where the Green Hill Pack falls flat, as its textures – such as trees, gravel, and cobblestone – do not resemble their original forms in any sense. The pack heavily based around the original Sega Genesis Sonic games, hence its old school texture style. The creator has clearly put a lot of effort into this texture pack, but it is clear after reading the comments that a lot of people are confused by the drastic changes that have been made to each block.

7 The Best: Default 3D Resource Pack

Minecraft Default 3D Texture Pack

Just when you thought Minecraft couldn’t get any better – there is now a texture pack that allows you to convert your old boring 2D blocks into fancy, detailed 3D items. The Default 3D resource pack is easily one of the most unique texture packs in Minecraft as it takes your old, ugly standard 2D blocks and changes them into a more eye-catching, 3D item.

Crafting tables, ladders, ores, and furnaces are just some of the many items that have been given a facelift. Although the texture pack was released in July 2014, the developer Know2Good has constantly kept this resource pack up-to-date with all of Minecraft’s latest updates. If you are worried about whether or not your computer can handle the texture pack, Know2Good has provided 5 different download methods to suit every computer. Default 3D is to this date one of the most downloaded texture packs for Minecraft despite its requirements.

6 The Worst: Aleph Setei Resource Pack

Minecraft Aleph Setei Texture Pack

Created by NewEvolution, the Aleph Setei resource pack is heavily based around aliens and futuristic themes. Judging from the picture, it is quite easy to tell that the creator didn’t skimp on the texturing as everything in the game is either alien looking or futuristic.

The overall concept and vision that the creator had for the Aleph Setei texture pack was fantastic, and it was evidently clear that a lot of work went into completing this pack - but the color schemes that has been used within the game looks chaotic. If you do happen to try out this resource pack, be sure to set your Alternate Blocks to Off - otherwise, the textures will tile incorrectly.

5 The Best: SapixCraft Original HD

Minecraft Sapixcraft Texture Pack

There are countless cartoon themed texture packs available for people to download across the internet but none seem to compare to SapixCraft Original HD as it is quite possibly the best cartoon themed texture pack that is currently available for Minecraft. Although that is a large title for SapixCraft to live up to, its vibrant colors, simplicity, and resemblance to default Minecraft will quickly make you realize just why it holds this title.

RELATED: Minecraft: Best Data Packs

While the texture pack is quite old, it is still being updated on a very regular basis by its creator, Sapix. To receive the full support and potential of this texture pack, it is important to use MCPatcher and OptiFine. Player’s should also be aware that a 3D texture add-on is available for this resource pack via Sapix’s website.

4 The Worst: Candy Craft

Minecraft Candycraft Texture Pack

You are never going to want to eat candy again after looking at this texture pack – unless you are looking at the official CandyCraft resource pack that actually looks very cool. While the creator – Eatoncheese – had a great concept behind this texture pack it is clear – that while a lot of work did go into it – the execution didn’t pan out as well as he may have hoped.

When the textures are all placed together, it is very clear – and even a little overwhelming – just how unorganized and out of place all of the textures are as none of them seem to match or even go together. Many of the textures even appear to look stretched and a little pixelated.

3 The Best: Equanimity

Minecraft Equanimity Texture Pack

With over 3,230,000 downloads on CurseForge alone, the Equanimity texture pack is among the most downloaded resource packs for Minecraft. With its clean, simplistic and realistic feel, it comes as no surprise that Equanimity is one of the best-looking texture packs you can find online.

Although Equanimity was released in November 2013, the creator – Filmjolk – has continually updated the pack on a regular basis to ensure that all new items are added into the pack. Filmjolk has also stated he can create up to 12 or more different textures per hour, meaning that each texture is usually created in less than 5 minutes. This is just one of the many reasons why – after three years - that the texture pack still remains one of the most updated and downloaded texture packs for Minecraft.

It is also recommended that you use OptiFine and the Continuum Shader to receive the texture packs full potential.

2 The Worst: Worst Texture Pack Ever

Minecraft The Worst Texture Pack Ever

There isn’t much to say about this texture pack – it is pretty self-explanatory. The Worst Texture Pack Ever doesn’t lie; it really is the worst Minecraft texture pack that you can find on the Internet. While many go out of their way to create terrible texture packs, few come as close to horrid as this one.

If you are looking for a texture pack that will hurt your eyes or simply want to prank your friends, this is the texture pack that you are looking for.

1 The Best: Serene HD

Minecraft Serene HD Texture Pack

Serene HD is among one of the most realistic, modern resource packs you can own as it allows you to create content that wouldn’t otherwise be possible in other texture packs.

It's difficult to create modern builds in Minecraft. While there have been countless modern texture packs created, none have really met the standards of Serene HD as they usually look modern, but lack the realistic aspect. The Serene HD resource pack – when paired with OptiFine and a realistic shader of your choice – looks absolutely beautiful, especially when building a sleek and modern house on the water.
