What started out as a passion project has turned into one of the biggest gaming franchises in existence. With how complex Minecraft has become, newcomers may need a little guidance to figure out some of the intricate details of the game.

Updated March 4, 2023 by Jacqueline Zalace: Minecraft has grown into something large, with tons of undiscovered nooks and crannies. Because of that, we've added more tips and tricks that you may not know yet.

18 Increasing Llama Carrying Capacity

Chances are, you don't use llamas too often in Minecraft. Hear us out though; llamas can be a great way to transport items, especially if you don't have access to Shulker Boxes yet. If you click on a llama while holding a chest, the chest will become their inventory space.

Depending on the llama's strength, it will have a varied amount of inventory spaces. For example, the strongest llamas will have 15 slots, while the weakest ones will have just three. You can breed llamas (similar to horses) to increase this strength.

17 Blocks Break On The Northmost Face

This may be unknown to most players, but when you break a block, the breaking pattern on the top face of the block will point north.

There are methods in Minecraft to check your coordinates and orientation. By using the break pattern though, you can quickly check which way you're facing, which comes in handy in places like the Nether, especially if you are trying to make a Nether highway.

16 Lava Buckets Are Great Fuel

Minecraft - player standing in a forest that's burning with lava

If you find lava anywhere, be sure to keep it marked. As soon as you get some buckets, go and collect as much lava as possible. Lava is an excellent fuel to use in the furnace.; it lasts far longer than wooden material or coal.

Lava is also one of the ingredients in creating obsidian, a rare block. With a bonus use like that, there's no reason not to carry lava. Get as many buckets of this as possible and become an efficient adventurer.

15 New Diamond Levels

Minecraft---player-standing-close-to-bedrock-with-diamonds-1

Prior to Minecraft 1.17, Diamonds were most likely to spawn at Y-levels 5 through 12. Going any further down than that wouldn't increase the likelihood of you finding diamonds, and would increase your likelihood of encountering lava.

As of Minecraft 1.18, the game has been updated to change the way that Diamonds spawn. Now, you'll find diamonds at Y-levels 15 through -63. Y-level -64 is basically just bedrock. Rather than only appearing most often in certain Y-levels, diamonds just get more and more likely the further down you are, so start digging!

14 Evokers Change Wool Color Of Blue Sheep

Ever had a blue sheep and thought, "I wish this was red"? Well, there is a slightly complex way to deal with this. When an Evoker is near a blue sheep, it will wiggle its arms, go 'wololo', and turn the sheep red.

This is a reference to Age of Empires. In this game, priests will make the same noise, and turn enemy units into your units. This doesn't have much practical use, but it's a great Easter Egg for Age of Empire fans.

13 Use Torches To Farm Sand/Gravel Blocks

Minecraft - Minecraft torch with gravel blocks

Torches are probably some of the most versatile items in all of Minecraft. They do the obvious things like lighting up dark areas and keeping monsters away. However, they have some other useful abilities.

As you may know, sand and gravel blocks are affected by gravity. So, if you remove the block underneath, they will fall. At that moment before the block falls, you can place a torch. This will cause all of the blocks to be broken allowing you to collect them. As a fun bonus tip, you could also place a torch beneath you when digging upwards to prevent gravel or sand from falling and killing you!

12 Mushroom Biomes Are Safe

Minecraft Mooshroom Mushroom Fields

The Mushroom Biome is the only biome where hostile mobs do not spawn at night. This makes it the safest place in Minecraft and the best place to build a home. There are also no mobs in the cave systems, allowing for safer mining.

However, be aware that mob spawners will still work. So, if you do see any zombies or spiders, then you know there's a spawner nearby. Overall, the Mushroom Biome is a good place for a base, especially if you like to keep the lighting low.

11 Pumpkin Head

Wearing a pumpkin is more about just making you look awesome. Yet, it has other benefits which can help you fight a powerful foe. If you wear a Pumpkin, then Endermen will not attack you, even if you attack them.

Endermen only attack those who make eye contact with them. However, the Pumpkin technically prevents you from making eye contact. So, they stick to their mantra and refuse to fight back. Such honorable foes.

10 Get Some Bodyguards

It's a good idea to get some extra help to protect your house. To do so, you can create an Iron Golem. This mob is made by placing iron blocks in a t-shape, as shown above.

Once summoned, the Iron Golem will defend you against hostile mobs that are nearby. Overall, the golems are powerful and durable, perfect for standing guard.

9 Become A Cat Person

Minecraft - creeper and a cat

Cats are a cute addition to Minecraft and make for nice pets. However, it's more than just having a cat as a pet. They also serve an important function; Creepers are very scared of cats.

If you have enough cats around your house, then Creepers will avoid you at all costs. It's the best way to ensure that you won't run into any explosive surprises when doing some farming or building.

8 Placing Doors Underwater

Minecraft - sign creating an airport underwater

Whenever you go on a trip underwater, be sure to take at least one door with you. They can help you breathe underwater for a longer period of time. By placing a door on a block, it creates an air bubble that you can stand in.

Rather than drowning to death, you can stand in your weird rectangle of air and catch your breath before setting out again.

7 Another Way To Fight A Blaze

A Blaze in Minecraft on fire

The Blaze is a powerful mob in the Nether. They can be a tough enemy to beat through conventional methods and their fire blasts can also knock you into the lava, eliminating you instantly.

The Blaze mob is weak to snowballs, so you should take as many of them as possible. Using snowballs from afar is a safer way to defeat the Blaze. It's not the most efficient, but it will ensure your safety.

6 Don't Destroy Mob Spawners

Minecraft - monster spawner with torches

Enemy spawners can be extremely frustrating. They spawn enemies into the vicinity until you get tired or are defeated. Unless of course, you are able to destroy them. However, there is another option.

Just place torches all around the spawner. Most players put one on each vertical side and on the top of the spawner, but it also works if you place them around the room, since it's about the fact that there's a light source present. Spawners do not respawn, so it will be gone forever if you destroy one!

5 Sneaking Swiftly

Minecraft - player crouching to avoid falling

Crouching is a useful way to expand your movement options. By crouching, you can walk a little bit off the edge of a block, and you can't fall. This is ideal when you're building a bridge-like structure.

We all know this though. The real tip comes with the Deep Dark update. If you took a break from Minecraft and came back to the game, then you are in for a treat. With the Swift Sneak enchantment, you can crouch and walk extra quick, allowing you to place blocks or flee from the Warden's territory in a timely manner.

4 Milking A Mooshroom

Mooshrooms are a special type of cow that are exclusive to the Mushroom Biome, which we mentioned above. They are similar to regular cows, and you can even milk them... except you won't get what you expected. Instead of milk, you get mushroom stew.

This can be quite useful, as the stew can restore some of your hunger. If you find yourself in a Mushroom Biome, then try milking one of these red cows.

3 Personalize Dog Collars

Minecraft - dogs with different coloured collars

It's a good idea to tame a group (read: army) of dogs to hunt with. They are great in combat and can help turn the tide in your favor. However, you may want to give them all different names and differentiate them further.

You can easily do that by changing the color of their collar. Simply get a dye for the color you want and right-click on the dog. You now have a customized dog collar in Minecraft!

2 Locking A Map

Minecraft Screenshot Empty Locator Map

Maps are a great way to navigate the world around you, but you can also use them to make epic art. Essentially, maps serve as the canvas for pixel art. Once you remove the blocks from the ground though, the map will update and change.

By adding a glass pane to the map, you can lock it in place. This is helpful if you want to document your base's progression over time. Additionally, it's helpful for those who are making several map art pieces on the same Overworld surface.

1 Zombies & Turtle Eggs

Lastly, let's go over zombies and turtle eggs. This may sound like a punchline to a bad joke, but zombie variants are all attracted to these little eggs. By zombie variants, we mean normal Zombies, Husks, Drowned, Zombie Villagers, and Zombified Piglins.

With this in mind, turtle eggs are great within mob farms. For example, you can use a turtle egg in a Zombified Piglin gold farm. When the egg is in the center of a spawn platform, the zombies will head toward it. If you place a hole just before the eggs, the mob will fall to its death and drop some gold.
