Action MOBA Battlerite is getting a battle royale mode, because why not?

Battle royale seems to be popular these days. First came PUBG--actually, first game DayZ: Battle Royale, then came PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, then Fortnite jumped on the battle royale bandwagon, and now there’s rumors that there will be a battle royale game mode in virtually every new multiplayer game between now and the end of time.

And now Battlerite.

On the surface, Battlerite doesn’t seem like a game that would lend itself to a battle royale mode. It’s ostensibly a MOBA, which, unlike League of Legends, says nuts to the whole "base" thing and simply pits two teams of three players against each other in a best of 10 rounds team fight. Like most MOBAs, there’s different hero classes for you to choose from to create a well-rounded team, with ranged assassins and bulky tanks and healers galore.

But those heroes are all created around the fact that Battlerite is a team game. Suddenly make it into a battle royale and there seems little incentive for anyone to play a support class. If you have no teammates you have nobody to heal.

So how will Battlerite pull of this battle royale bonanza? A Reddit post gives some insight.

First, instead of 3v3 fights, they’re suddenly 20-person free-for-alls (with optional teams of two). Packing twenty players on a map that’s designed to make a 3v3 fight interesting would make things a little cramped, so arenas will be expanded to 30 times their normal size. That’s a big map and one that could easily see players wandering around aimlessly.

Developers Stunlock Studios says that the bigger maps won’t make endless games and that matches will last 10 minutes on average. Presumably there will be some sort of shrinking zone of death that will keep the action flowing.

As normal, you’ll choose your champion before the fight, but there’s no word on what happens to the namesake Battlerite system that allows each champion to be customized for each matchup. Also, there will be items.

Battlerite Royale arrives this summer.
