Most Metal Gear Solid fans say that Metal Gear Solid 2 had a story that was too convoluted and they didn't really like Raiden as a character. The same convoluted criticism can be leveled at the plot of Metal Gear Solid 4, plus fans just didn't really jive with Old Snake's crotchety disposition. Not that you could blame Old Snake for being crotchety after finding out he'd die in a year because he was a poorly-made clone.

But if you had to ask fans to choose between Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, well then you might have a lively debate. Metal Gear Solid might have started things off, but Snake Eater is the highest-rated game in the franchise and many consider it to be the height of Metal Gear.

Sadly, Metal Gear 3 released way back in 2004 for the PS2 and has yet to be ported to anything other than the Nintendo 3DS. But a group of modders is looking to change that by porting Metal Gear Solid 3 into Metal Gear Solid 5.

Redditor BeesWX posted some early screenshots on the Metal Gear Solid subreddit showcasing a game world that's far lusher and jungle-like than Metal Gear Solid 5's arid terrain.

This mod is still in its very early stages and is not yet available to download, "but progress is going fast," according to BeesWX. The mod team is currently looking for people to help research Metal Gear Solid 5's game engine to further incorporate Metal Gear Solid 3 assets. You can join the Discord, appropriately called "Modders Heaven," by following this link.

If any of the Metal Gear games deserve a remake, it's Metal Gear Solid 3. But if you're fine with old-school polygons, then you can play the first two Metal Gear Solid games over on GOG.com. Konami ported these two games to PC last September, along with the Collector's Series for Castlevania and Contra.
