According to a recent leak, a remastered version of 2009's Modern Warfare 2 is currently in the works at Activision, and it could be released as early as 2021. Seeing as many consider the game to be the best of the Call of Duty catalogue, it's safe to say that a Modern Warfare 2 remake would peak the interest of many fans and would capitalize on the franchise's resurgent success.

TheGamingRevolution, a Twitter user best known for accurately leaking information on Modern Warfare's Warzone mode, is responsible for this intel. Along with a Modern Warfare 2 remaster, the user also said that a sequel to Modern Warfare is in the works, as well as a free-to-play Call of Duty title. This is all on top of 2020's untitled Call of Duty release due out in the fall.

So it's safe to say that we'll be seeing a lot of Call of Duty for years to come, but for those who lived through the golden age of the series, a Modern Warfare 2 remaster might be the most exciting name in the bunch. The game is easily the most iconic, and a remake could even surpass the success seen by 2019's Modern Warfare if done correctly.

Although the most recent Modern Warfare may have been a spiritual remake of Call of Duty 4, it sounds like the Modern Warfare remaster is going to stick to the roots of the original game, simply updating the graphics, mechanics, and overall presentation instead of reimagining everything from the ground up.

It will be interesting to see where Activision decides to go with the sequel to 2019's Modern Warfare, though. It sounds like it might be releasing a Modern Warfare 2 remaster and a Modern Warfare 2 spiritual reboot around the same time. Don't worry, if the timeline is confusing you at this point, you're definitely not alone.

Either way, it sounds like Call of Duty is evolving beyond annual releases and might be dropping as many as two games a year with all of the titles that Activision has planned. Considering the crazy amount of money the franchise is making, we guess we can't really blame it.
