Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin has a ton of monsters that can be fought and eventually added to your party as lovable monsties. The power of Kinship keeps these monsters loyal to their riders and can be used in battle to great effect.

RELATED: Monster Hunter Stories 2 Is The Comforting RPG I Desperately NeededTechnical monsties are one of the three categories of monstie, and often have some abilities worth considering over the brute strength of Power monsties and the ravaging agility of Speed monsties. Within the game, they are a crucial part of the balance, so having one or two of these powerful beasts on hand is definitely mandatory.

10 Crimson Qurupeco

  • Genus: Bird Wyvern
  • Habitat: Pomore Garden
  • Riding Action: Monster Search

While solidly infamous for being an incredibly annoying enemy to fight in the mainline Monster Hunter games, the Crimson Qurupeco here might end up more beloved. This variant on the regular Bird Wyvern has a solid supportive skillset of Paralysis and the ability to weaken every enemy's attack and defense.

Notable is the Crimson Qurupeco's very high Recovery stat. This means that healing moves heal it for a lot, so consider using the Rite of Channeling to grab a nice healing move from a different monstie.

9 Red Khezu

Monstipedia entry for Red Khezu in Monster Hunter Stories 2 Wings of Ruin
  • Genus: Flying Wyvern
  • Habitat: Lavina Glacial Peaks
  • Riding Action: Roar

The fact that Red Khezu is available at the exact same time as regular Khezu does the latter a lot of damage. This variant has a higher Crit Rate and higher attack in every element except Water. As a result, it makes for a very attractive Technical monstie at that part of the game.

As you'd expect from a member of the Khezu family, the Red Khezu is excellent at inflicting Paralysis. It even has one of the few Trap moves that will set a nasty and stunning trap for any enemy that attacks it.

8 Pukei-Pukei

Monstipedia entry for Pukei-Pukei in Monster Hunter Stories 2 Wings of Ruin
  • Genus: Bird Wyvern
  • Habitat: North Kamuna Cape
  • Riding Action: Roar

While encountered very early on in the game, a Pukei-Pukei can be a valuable party member for a surprisingly long amount of time. It has a surprisingly high health stat for an early monstie and is capable of taking a beating.

Skill-wise, Pukei-Pukei is mainly focused on inflicting Poison. This is a great status ailment to have in your back pocket in this game as it deals consistent damage. This monster is also pretty good at dealing Non-Elemental damage, so consider loading it up with more powerful attacks to use once the Poison has spread.

7 Basarios

Monster Hunter Stories 2 Monstipedia Basarios
Monstipedia entry for Basarios in Monster Hunter Stories 2 Wings of Ruin
  • Genus: Flying Wyvern
  • Habitat: Harzgai Rocky Hill
  • Riding Actions: Ore & Bone Search, Ground Dive

Basarios is the star of one of the more memorable story quests in Monster Hunter Stories 2 and it's easy to see why. This bulky beast is fantastic at survivability and has no problems in dishing out the damage. This is thanks to its potent Gas skills, which can inflict either Poison or Burn to entire enemy parties.

Spreading such painful status effects is a brilliant strategy for the longer fights against more tanky enemies, so training a Basarios up is a great idea.

6 Zamtrios

  • Genus: Amphibian
  • Habitat: Base of Mt. Lavina
  • Riding Action: Swim

This is most likely to be the first big monster you fight in the region of Loloska, thanks to a fun miniboss battle that occurs there. Zamtrios has pretty balanced, high stats that can carry you through a very large portion of the game, especially if you upgrade one with great Ice genes.

Being able to Swim is a nice ability to have for treasure collecting, and not many monsties have it. In addition, a Zamtrios is quite self-sufficient in battle with its Ice Armor ability, which makes it an even more potent battler. It's a great all-rounder to consider for your party.

5 Ruby Basarios

  • Genus: Flying Wyvern
  • Habitat: Pomore Garden
  • Riding Actions: Ore & Bone Search, Ground Dive

Thanks to its glittering hide, the Ruby Basarios is quite easy to find in the region of Lamure. It also makes for a quite timely upgrade as it has the rare Ground Dive riding ability, which becomes more applicable at this point in the game.

In battle, it acts quite like a souped-up Basarios, with super-high survivability and better Gas attacks. While Sleep Gas will be situational, Noxious Poison Gas is a very potent ability that will rack up the damage if you manage to get it to stick. Consider applying this monster with some infliction-rate up genes that you can find on Nerscylla for maximum status spread.

4 Astalos

  • Genus: Flying Wyvern
  • Habitat: Terga Volcano Base
  • Riding Action: Fly

You must take on the Subquest called A Scrivener's Fears in order to take on this tough monster in the region of Terga. It's well worth the effort, as Astalos is one of the strongest Thunder-elemental monsties in the game. It has a lot of ways to inflict Paralysis on entire enemy parties, and Paralysis is possibly the most useful status ailment in the game.

Also notable is its Vengeful Thunder skill. This gets stronger as the Astalos loses HP — and thankfully, this monstie has a large health pool, meaning it can get a lot out of this skill without being in too much danger. This monstie can deal a lot of damage.

3 Shrouded Nerscylla

  • Genus: Temnoceran
  • Habitat: Terga Volcano Base
  • Riding Actions: Monster Search, Ivy Climb

Crit Rate is the name of the game when it comes to this arachnid nightmare. This monstie will be very good at dealing Non-Elemental damage, and has a very decent chance of making it critical damage, at that.

As you'd expect from a spider, the Shrouded Nerscylla also has a deadly set of status skills to use. Arachnophobia can inflict both Poison and Paralysis, while Parapoison Chaser does extra damage to foes afflicted with those effects. Particularly notable however is Toxic Needle, which deals low damage but can inflict Poison and has a chance to outright fell the target in one shot. A trained Shrouded Nerscylla is a very devious threat to go against.

2 Mizutsune

  • Genus: Leviathan
  • Habitat: Pomore Garden
  • Riding Action: Dash

The graceful Mizutsune can be slightly elusive at first, but it only takes a Subquest (namely, The Enemy of Love) to force it to spawn in Pomore Garden. This monster is a great support option that can really help deal with tough battles. It does this mainly through Bewitching Bubbles, which deals damage to the entire enemy party along with dealing a reduction in Speed and Accuracy.

Not only that, but its very powerful Aqua Blaster can also reduce an enemy's Speed. This is a great foundation to work with to make a fantastic teammate, especially as its stats are very high all around.

1 Stygian Zinogre

Monster Hunter Stories 2 Monstipedia Stygian Zinogre
Monstipedia entry for Stygian Zinogre in Monster Hunter Stories 2 Wings of Ruin
  • Genus: Fanged Wyvern
  • Habitat: Forbidden Grounds
  • Riding Action: Jump

Despite only being available right toward the end of the story, Stygian Zinogre is easily one of the best Technical monsties you can get. With huge stats, a focus on the rare Dragon element, and a great multi-target Kinship skill, this monstie will be hitting high numbers when it comes to damage.

Training up a Stygian Zinogre should be a priority sooner rather than later, as it has some fantastic skills. Dracophage Shot and Dragonfist will do a lot of damage while also lowering enemy Crit Rate, which will help avoid nasty accidents. This is also a fantastic monstie to take with you into the postgame as you'll start fighting monsters weak to the Dragon element.
