The past fiscal year was an important one for Capcom, as they gambled on some uncertain games being popular. Luckily for them, it paid off big time and resulted in the highest level of profitability in the company's history.

The latest financial report that details Capcom's 2017/18 fiscal year shows a promising picture for the company going forward. Monster Hunter World turned out to be Capcom's best-selling title ever, while Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers proved to be a surprise smash hit, considering the fact that it was a port of an old game on a brand new system.

Monster Hunter World is also expected to receive another surge in sales later on this year when the Steam version of the game is finally released.

One of the few disappointments in Capcom's lineup was the lukewarm reception to Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, which had underperformed outside of Japan.

Capcom's net sales through the end of 2018 were over ninety-four million yen, which represents an 8.4% increase from their previous fiscal year, which concluded in March 2017.

So what do these numbers mean for Capcom going forward? The incredible international success of Monster Hunter World (especially in regions outside of Japan), as well as other games in the series, mean that we will see a greater focus on Monster Hunter titles going forward. There were concerns that the Monster Hunter franchise had run out of steam in Japan, but all it took was a true triple-A quality entry in the series to revive interest in what was becoming a formulaic franchise.

The success of Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers was equally as surprising when you consider that it's an updated port of a twenty-year-old game that was exclusive to a brand new console. This means that we will see a lot more Capcom support for the Nintendo Switch going forward, which will be a huge boon to the system, as one of the biggest issues with the Nintendo Wii U was its lack of third-party support.
