Although there are several Keeper battles in Monster Sanctuary that serve as boss battles, the true test of your abilities as a Keeper come in the form of Champion battles. These monsters are much more powerful than your standard monsters, with increased health and mana stats as well as the ability to act multiple times in a single turn.

Because of the difficulty of these battles, you may have to return to them later in the game once you have acquired a few more monsters in an effort to defeat them. While some are a little easier than others to defeat, some are significantly hard to obtain a five or six-star rating against, which is necessary in order to obtain their respective egg or evolution item.

Updated July 6th, 2022 by Geoffrey Martin: Monster Sanctuary, while not an outwardly demanding and punishing game, can easily up the ante in terms of challenge level when it comes to the game's Champion Monsters. As you might imagine, Champion Monsters are super tough variations of many of the traditional monsters that can be stumbled across while exploring the labyrinthian world of Monster Sanctuary. This list continues to be fleshed out with some of the toughest Champion Monsters that you can encounter in the game.

12 Goblin King

Golbin King is one of those rare and interesting monsters in the game that actually blocks progression if you haven't yet beat him. You can find Goblin King in the Ancient Woods at the Goblin Fort. If you want to have any hope of moving the adventure forward and getting to the next area of the game (Horizon Beach) then you need to defeat Goblin King.

What makes Goblin King so demanding is in part because he doesn't fight alone and in part because of his powerful moves. His allies are Goblin Warlock and Goblin Hood, two monsters that also put up quite the fight. A good strategy to employ is to try and first take out Goblin King's two minions. At this point, you can use your party to focus attacks and debuffs on Goblin King alone.

11 King Blob

Another king monster that might not look all that intimidating but provides quite the difficulty spike is King Blob. Okay, King Blob might look a bit derpy, however, don't let his visage fool you. Getting to King Blob requires some strategic thinking. In order to get to him you have to first get to the end of the Blob Burg area of the game and you must also obtain all the treasure chests.

King Blob uses various poison-based attacks which can quickly leech the health and energy from your chosen monster party. It's a great idea to have at least one monster that can remedy this quickly during the hectic battle. Apart from the high poison damage, King Blob also has a large health pool which takes a good deal of time to widdle away.

10 Brutus

Brutus encounter Monster Sanctuary

Brutus is easily one of the most powerful monsters in Monster Sanctuary with an attack stat that is unrivaled by most other monsters. However, while it is incredibly powerful with no inherent weaknesses of any kind, its attacks are also limited to Neutral damage, meaning there are very few monsters who are weak to it.

Brutus also doesn't have any resistances, meaning that it can't even act as a decent defensive option and is purely designed to hit as hard as possible.

9 Dracozul

Monster sanctuary dracozul baddie in snow region

By itself, Dracozul would probably be a much easier fight, but what makes this battle so difficult is that it is accompanied by two Draconov whose only role in the battle is to load it up with various buffs. This is made even worse by the fact that all of these buffs can stack up to three times, meaning that Dracozul's attacks are going to hit very hard while other defensive buffs are also keeping it alive for much longer.

Unless you have a dedicated team for this battle, it is unlikely that you will get very far without having to use Phoenix Tears or various potions.

8 Aazerach

Aazerach battle Monster Sanctuary

Aazerach's defenses are fairly weak compared to most other Champion battles, but what it lacks in defense it more than makes up for in annoyance. Alongside using Shadow Storm and Shadow Grasp to inflict Blind stacks on your team, those Blind debuffs can also lead to other randomized debuffs thanks to its passive skill, True Darkness.

Not only is Aazerach a pain to even hit, but it also has the Buff Steal passive skill and the Arcane Diffusion attack, which, when combined, means that any buffs you try to put on your team to give yourself an edge over Aazerach might end up working against you in the long run.

7 Mad Lord

Mad Lord Monster Sanctuary

The final boss of the game, Mad Lord is no joke. With great stats across the board and a resistance to all damage over time debuffs, Mad Lord forces you to shift gears from the way you have most likely been playing up until this point and focus entirely on your damage output over buffing and debuffing. Not only that, but it is holding the Abyssal Sword, which has a chance of every attack it gives and receives to inflict a random buff on itself or debuff on your team.

Mad Lord even has access to Wind, Fire, Earth, and Water attacks, meaning there are very few monsters that are able to resist everything Mad Lord can dish out. The best course of action is to use Bleed stacks since that is the only debuff that Mad Lord doesn't resist.

6 Vodinoy

Vodinoy Champion in Horizon Beach

Found deep in Horizon Beach, Vodinoy is significantly harder than the other Champion found in this area, Elder Gel. Aside from having a wide pool of elemental damage, the majority of its attacks can also inflict bleed stacks if they don't knock out your monsters outright through how much damage it can deal.

While inflicting stacks of Weakness and Armor Break is useful, the fact that it resists Water damage means that attacks that commonly inflict those debuffs won't be particularly effective. Using a monster that has the Chilling Wind attack, as it is weak to Wind damage and inflicting Chill can significantly lower its damage output, is a good way to deal with Vodinoy.

5 Spinner

Spinner encounter Monster Sanctuary

While most other Champion monsters are stationary, Spinner apparently didn't get the memo and forces you to chase after it before you can even battle it. Once you do catch Spinner, however, that is only the beginning of how difficult this battle is, as the debuffs it can inflict are annoying to say the least.

Aside from multiple attacks being able to inflict Tether stacks, it can also inflict Poison, Chill, and Burn debuffs on your team while being able to capitalize on those debuffs with additional Bleed stacks or, in the case of the Poison debuff, its Poison Eater attack, which heals additional health if the target is poisoned.

4 Kanko

Kanko encounter Monster Sanctuary

Like Aazerach, Kanko has the annoying habit of being able to dodge attacks with ease, though its battle is made even harder by the fact that it gets a random buff whenever it dodges an attack. Using Earth attacks that are guaranteed to hit will help in this battle, but that isn't the end of the problem with battling Kanko.

Aside from its dodging abilities, Kanko can also buff itself to the moon and back with Warcast and Shroud, which grant it Might, Channel, Agility, and Spellshield, alongside being able to stack Might multiple times.

3 Diavola

Diavola fight Monster Sanctuary

This weird plant thing that looks like a horrifying combination of Carnivine and the plant monster for Little Shop of Horrors is a surprisingly difficult battle considering its goofy design. Found in the Sun Palace after gaining the ability to see invisible platforms, this Champion battle is unlike anything you have done before.

Aside from having a very annoying ability to inflict bleed stacks by simply attacking it, it also has the nasty habit of using Restoring Shield, which not only gives it a very powerful shield but also removes any debuffs you try to inflict it with to make the battle a little easier. With enough practice and some well places Fire attacks, you might eventually defeat this monster.

2 Vertraag

Vertraag battle in Monster Sanctuary

Vertraag is easily one of the most well-hidden Champions in Monster Sanctuary, found by turning the clock in the Mystical Workshop area to 11:05. After changing the time, you will open a portal that leads you to this insane boss battle that is always locked at level 40, despite how early you can access this room. Vertraag only has a weakness to Neutral damage and resists Burn, Chill, and Poison damage over time effects.

The best way to defeat this thing is to bombard it with Neutral damage attacks that also inflict Bleed stacks, as this is the one debuff that it doesn't resist, alongside a monster with the Bleed Out passive skill that prevents Bleed stacks from disappearing.

1 Gryphonix

Gryphonix in Magma Chamber Monster Sanctuary

Vertraag may be hard to beat, but it has nothing on Gryphonix. Found in the depths of the Magma Chamber, this monster can easily sweep through your team if you aren't careful and functions similarly to Dracozul.

However, where Dracozul's power comes from the fact that it doesn't fight alone, Gryphonix has all the same power alongside the Phoenix Affinity passive skill that revives it after it has been defeated, making the fight last at least one more turn than you had planned for. Thankfully, it does have a weakness to Earth damage and, by extension, Poison debuff stacks.
