It might appear like a straightforward fishing RPG on the surface, but Moonglow Bay is surprisingly pretty dense and also vast not only in its story and fishing lore but in the little bits of humor hidden throughout.

Besides a laundry list of secret achievements you can rack up during your playthrough, here are just a few of the hidden gems you should try to hunt down while playing Moonglow Bay.

8/8 Sonic The Hedgehog Makes An Appearance

Entirely unmistakable, one of the most direct easter eggs tucked away right in plain sight is in your very own bedroom. Waffles the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever shares a bed in your room and sitting upon his bed is a very familiar-looking blue spiky plushie.

We can only assume that this is none other than a reference to Sonic The Hedgehog, huge buggy eyes and all. Waffles must love his friend Sonic an awful lot to have kept him by his dog bed every night.

7/8 Waffles The Dog Will Follow You

You likely already know that you can pet Waffles the dog in Moonglow Bay. He is an adorable pixelated pooch and deserves all the pats. What you might not have released is that petting Waffles controls whether he follows or stays.

Once you pet Waffles outside your house, he will follow you to the ends of the earth. If there is somewhere you would rather not bring him, simply give him another pat and he will stay right there like the good boy he is.

6/8 The Armchair Is More Than Just Decoration

Yes, you can actually sit in Moonglow Bay. Plus, it's not just for the sake of it. Perhaps you've accomplished everything you need to today, but you're still waiting for a business to open or an event to take place. Simply take a seat in the little pink armchair in your own home, and your character will grab up a book and start reading.

Reading in the armchair advances time just a little bit quicker, making it easier to progress through an otherwise uneventful day.

5/8 These Fish Names Are So Punny

Sure, some of the fish you might catch will seem pretty run of the mill. Atlantic Cod, Bluefin Tuna, and so on. But there are also dozens of fantastical fictional fish that the devs at Bunnyhug have cooked up for us (pun intended).

Some fish are named after sweets, others after land-dwelling animals. Others bear a striking resemblance to certain cartoon characters. When catching and cataloging your fish, be sure to read the names and also the descriptions to catch all the small references.

4/8 Fish Names Change In Your Journal

As much as we all want Fingerpaint Larry to be a real fish just because the old guy outside the aquarium told us so, in reality, many of the fish names townsfolk will give you are pure fantasy.

As you keep talking to people around town, they will tell you about fish they once encountered and typically provide a name that they use to refer to this fish colloquially. Unfortunately, the ocean is not full of fish named Dave, and as you bring your newest catches to Marina at the aquarium, the "scientific" names of those fish will appear in your Journal.

3/8 Did You Really Need That Tow?

Before you go full-throttle on the open ocean, you should know that your boat can actually sustain damage. Crashing into objects on the waters will slowly wear your boat down, and you could even end up stranded. That's what your boat's radio is for. A quick call to Abi back in Moonglow Bay, and for a fee you will be towed back to the Boat Shop where you can purchase repairs.

Call Abi on the radio when your boat is undamaged, however, and you will unlock a secret achievement called "Then Peel Me A Grape". This is a reference to an older saying that comes from a Mae West film, which is essentially just a callout for requesting to be spoiled or catered to.

2/8 Trade Haru An Alligator Eel

One of Moonglow Bay's other zany achievements involves gifting a rather random fish to Goto Tech store attendant Haru. You can unlock the secret achievement "Uh... Thanks. I Think" when you specifically sell Haru one Alligator Eel from your inventory.

As a tech whiz, Haru probably is not too keen to buy any of the fish you have caught. Least of all this long, ferocious eel weighing over one hundred pounds. The Alligator Eel can only be caught in late-game, but if you are looking for a laugh, feel free to gift poor Haru this monstrosity.

1/8 Toss That Spider-Eyed Mermaid Back

Of course, you'll have seen that every time you catch a fish from the ocean, you have the option to release it or keep it. It probably hasn't occurred to you to release very many fish, unless your inventory is full, or you simply have too many of a certain species already. However, if you catch the terrifying Spider-Eyed Mermaid, you are actually encouraged to drop that sucker back into the ocean pronto.

Releasing a Spider-Eyed Mermaid at least two seconds after catching it will unlock a special achievement called "Get-it-off-get-it-off!". Just take one look at all those beady eyes on the fish, and you probably won't think twice about returning it to the ocean where it belongs.
