After living off scraps from Ed Boon's Twitter handle, we finally witnessed the announcement of the next chapter in the Mortal Kombat series. Mortal Kombat 1 will follow the MK universe remade by Fire God Liu Kang after the events of MK11. While we don't have any story details, the announcement trailer did give us a few clues.
The trailer revealed that Mortal Kombat 1 will be a timeline reset, but not an entire reboot. Liu Kang is now in charge, and he has recreated the MK universe giving everyone free will. And so we see what looks like Shang Tsung appearing before someone who looks like the great Kung Lao, a young Hanzo Hasashi and Bi-Han squaring off, and Kitana and Mileena riding in an Outworld palanquin together.
We know how these relationships unfolded before the timeline reboot, but the Mortal Kombat 1 trailer suggests things could go differently. Among all the things that could possibly change in this new timeline, many long-time fans have been hoping that Kitana and Mileena have a sisterly relationship. As you may know, Mileena is a clone of Kitana, spliced with Tarkatan DNA by Shang Tsung.
The Mortal Kombat Subreddit has a number of posts hoping for a better relationship between the two. They only hate one another because that's what they've been taught by Shao Kahn; and hopefully, MK1 changes that a bit.
"I see an anti-hero path possible where if she does turn she will go [into] exile," says a reply to the above post. "Her ending in MK11 suggested she just wanted to live a simple life, and even settle down with Tanya. But I'm fine with her going apeshit too - so long as it means I get to watch her tear D'Vorah into shreds."
"I'd really love if she was just Kitana's right hand, if someone fucks with her sister she'll eat them," says another reply. That brings us to the next post, which imagines the sisters' relationship as a trope where one's a hothead and the other is the calm one. I'll let you guess which is which.
"God, I'd love it if Mileena ends up being the caring but edgy sister," said one comment which knew exactly what we were thinking. "I've always liked the 'Clone but they act just like regular siblings' dynamic so I hope this is what happens," said another.
This has got many fans warmed up to the idea that we may finally see all four of the original female ninjas fighting on one side, for Edenia. Not only would that be a great sight, but classic fans would love it. "So glad they are actual sisters now. If Jade and Skarlet make the cut and all four are allies the Edenian ladies will be unstoppable.
