The dreaded Mortal Kombat 11 “forfeit glitch” is finally on NetherRealm Studios’ radar as they work towards a permanent solution.

However, crafty players found what can only be described as a different bug to counter with the original forfeit exploit. For now, the technique only works on Mortal Kombat 11 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with no similar option yet available for PC and Nintendo Switch users.

The technique, which counters a glitch that allows players to stall out matches until their opponents concede a loss, is quite simple. On the PlayStation, one needs to enable the “splash screen” that asks for a new controller re-connection. As such, this can be done with a single controller. When the screen reads, “Take me to title screen,” this is now safe to do. The screen will state “Ending Game,” but this is of no negative consequence. Players will still have their points and earn the win. The opponent will get both the Loss and the point deduction.

Xbox One users have a little more to do, in that they need two controllers to deal with the issue. For them, one must disconnect controller 1 to trigger the splash screen. Then, the player must connect controller 2 and hit B when the screen directs them to “Take me to title screen.” Similar to the PS4, this will proceed to take the player back to the title screen and award points while deducting those for the loser.

Until NetherRealm adds an official fix, this is players' best hope. PC and Nintendo Switch users should still play at their own risk, as there is no similar option available at the moment.

The original issue involves a glitch that some players exploited to cause frustration and anguish to their opponents. Mortal Kombat 11 players discovered recently that if they simply hover over the Forfeit Set button, and not actually confirm the action, they can remain in the match indefinitely without consequence to their win/loss ratio, and without any impact to their Kombat League points.

As for a permanent fix, it appears that NetherRealm Studios is on the cusp of releasing an update that will solve the problem. They updated the game on September 4, though the problem remains. In the meantime, players remain hopeful for a quick fix, and that it won't require a complicated correction.

Many players are also wondering whether people who exploit the glitch will face punishment. That would require some manner of tracking, and now more than ever, NetherRealm Studios has some incentive to look into the matter.

If it wishes to keep a game and its community alive and healthy, the developer needs to ensure that such toxic behavior is cut out at the source and not allowed to grow. How about a nice monthlong ban from online play? Perhaps in that time those exploiting users could practice their skills offline so as not to feel the need to resort to childish trickery when things don’t go their way.
