The 2019 Combo Breaker Tournament concluded this weekend with Brad “Scar” Vaughn going undefeated to upset SonicFox's Jacqui Briggs to become the best Mortal Kombat 11 player in the world. In the weeks leading up to the tournament, many wondered if anyone would be able to knock down Dominique “SonicFox” McLean, who ultimately lost in a close 3-2 Grand Finals match.
Although Scar showed an impressive performance throughout the tournament all weekend, he was almost eliminated earlier against Denom "A F0xy Grampa" Jones. Scar was down 0-2 in their match before switching to Scorpion to smash his way back in the next three consecutive games, sending A F0xy Grampa to the losers’ bracket.
The tactic was risky but also showed the diversity of Scar’s roster by moving to a character with extreme mobility that, if used improperly, could have been punished hard by his opponent.
The match began with SonicFox showing off his aggressive playstyle, gaining a corner advantage within moments the round start. The two stayed in that position for most of the first match, constantly throwing one another to trade ownership of the corner, with Scar performing more wake ups than fans are used to seeing from him, giving him the first win.
Despite SonicFox’s persistent efforts, coming back right after the first match with a flawless victory of his own, Scar kept up the pressure to drive it home and come out on top of the 800 person tournament.
For those not familiar with Scar’s recent history as a professional player in competitive fighting games, this victory marks a triumphant comeback after former sponsor Echo Fox released him about six months ago. Scar had spent two years with the organization before being cut loose but now leaves no doubt that he is a major force to be reckoned with in future tournaments.
Scar is now signed with Endemic Sports, and future opportunities are surely on the table now for the best MK11 player in the world.
Although the title now belongs to him, there is only a month until the next tournament in the Mortal Kombat 11 Pro Kompetition. Daytona Beach, Florida will be host to the next stop from June 29-30. When eventually all of the tournament stops have been played, Final Kombat will take place in Chicago, where all of the top players will compete for the grand prize of $100,000.
Congratulations to Scar on his well-earned victory!
