NetherRealm Studios has posted a statement explaining that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players of Mortal Kombat 11 will finally be getting cross-play between the two consoles. Although this does not include cross-saving of progress of an account on more than one console, and we do not yet have a specific date for when this new feature will go live, the news is still exciting and has been long-anticipated.

Players will not be forced to use the feature, and it must be toggled on in the options menu. When it is activated, the game will find a best match across both consoles. There will also be designated Krossplay Online Rooms for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players to be able to meet and fight online in Kasual game modes.

The news is a great step towards fully integrating Krossplay across all platforms, as now only PC, Nintendo Switch, and Stadia versions are left to include. The Nintendo Switch may be problematic, at least with how it is treated right now, since that version does not often receive balance and update patches as quickly as all other versions, but if this were addressed there would be little reason not to include it in future Krossplay plans.

Like other games that are slowly featuring more cross-play between platforms, players will be able to see a visual indicator in the form of two cross arrows on their Kombat Kard, while players that are on the same platform as you will retain their specific platform icon.

The news is welcome, though not altogether as surprising as it might have been earlier in the year. This is because in early October Sony opened developer access to its cross-play beta that until then had been primarily given only to Fortnite, Rocket League, and Dauntless, among a few others. The move was a surprise since Sony had for so long kept tight control over the idea of cross-play, and no one can really blame it considering it had absolute domination over this generation of consoles.

Now the real question is whether Sony will continue to allow for such progression in cross-play as the next generation of console nears. The 2020 Holiday season is when we should be seeing the launch of the PlayStation 5, and right now there seems little reason to believe that Sony will not still be controlling the market, though Microsoft has played its cards close to the chest with its next console, and anything could happen.

For now, players should be excited to be able to compete against players on both the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One!
