More details surrounding next month’s release of Mortal Kombat 11 have been revealed, and with it comes a new round playable characters.

Cassie Cage, Jacqui Briggs, and Erron Black are the latest official additions to the Mortal Kombat 11 roster, showcased via gameplay scenes in the latest story trailer.

Cassie Cage, who made her first appearance in Mortal Kombat X, returns to fight against the Netherrealm armies alongside past and present versions of her parents, Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage. Jacqui Briggs and Erron Black, who also debuted in Mortal Kombat X, appear to be along for the ride as well, but with differing agendas. In the trailer, Jacqui Briggs is shown battling an Outworld demon, while Erron Black appears to lead an attack on the Cages.

The trio joins the ever-expanding roster of playable Mortal Kombat 11 fighters, which thus far includes: Scorpion, Raiden, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Skarlet, Baraka, Geras, Kano, D’Vorah, Kabal, Jade, and Johnny Cage.

In regards to its story, previous theories have been confirmed that Kronika, being displeased with Raiden’s meddling, wishes to usher in a new era with a greater empire, enlisting Shao Kahn and his Outworld armies to assist in her plan. Characters from across the Mortal Kombat franchise return to pick sides and do battle in what looks to be a massive way.

The trailer itself is… well, fun. Developer Netherrealm Studios has always led the way in terms of story-based fighting games, and Mortal Kombat 11 doesn’t appear to deviate from that formula. The trailer is reminiscent of a late-90s/early-2000s movie, with one of its best moments coming from Johnny Cage having a conversation with his future self. Naysayers may have you believe that the trailer’s music selection was a poor choice, but the track fits pretty perfectly with the overall tone of the trailer and has us squealing with delight.

Additional details surrounding the trailer - including a closer look at Cassie Cage’s gameplay - will be revealed at 2 p.m. EST today, during Kombat Kast on Netherrealm’s Twitch channel.

We are just hoping the quick glimpse of what looks to be Zombie Liu Kang in the new trailer will eventually be revealed as another playable character.
