It is time to jump back into some online action with the start of Season III: Revenants Reborn in Mortal Kombat 11. Following last month’s “Season of Time,” players will need to go head-to-head online and complete quests that are similar in theme and type from before. As always, making it to the top tier is not particularly difficult, but it is a bit of a grind if one wants to acquire all the rewards.

Even at the Apprentice rank there are plenty of rewards that can be gained by working towards the quests listed below. There are only a few skins gated behind the highest ranks of play. Most of this information is less surprising than it should have been, since the leaks from a few days ago seem to have been completely accurate.

Seasonal Challenges

The quests here are similar to before, with the only change being uppercuts to throws in the seasonal challenge. The daily quest remains unchanged will continue to award 50 Time Krystals each day for completing five sets of Kombat League matches, which only require that you participate in matches every day, as opposed to needing to win. Even if you lose often, you get some great practice and a nice reward for your effort.

The Seasonal challenges and rewards are as follows:

  • Challenge: Connect 10 Fatal Blows – Reward: Gear, Sub-Zero, Penglai Island Arsenal
  • Challenge: Connect 25 Throws - Reward: Brutality, Frost, Unscrewed
  • Challenge: Complete 10 Ranked Daily Challenges - Reward: Gear, Frost, North Star Gemini
  • Challenge: Complete 15 Kombat League Sets - Reward: Brutality, Scarlet, Gushing Garrote
  • Challenge: Spill 10,000 Pints of Blood - Reward: Gear – Gear, Geras, The Unbound Soldier
  • Challenge: Complete all Season Challenges - Reward: Skin Kitana, True Empress

The completion reward for Kitana is a simple way to acquire a skin even if you play sparsely. In Season 1, Erron Black was the character to receive a skin at the highest level of ranked play, and in Season 2, the same character received a skin if one completed the Seasonal Challenges. We assumed that this might be a trend going forward, to provide a skin for a character in each season based on the highest tier from the season before, but this seems not to be the case as Jacqui Briggs held the highest spot in Season 2 as a ranked reward for a new skin, while now it is Kitana receiving the seasonal challenge completion skin.

Rank Rewards

Now we get into the rewards that take a bit of a grind to acquire. As we saw in the first two seasons, these rewards are gated through a grind of online kombat, but offer enticing rewards that consist of cosmetic items, all types of currencies, and finally, unique skins that cannot be obtained elsewhere. Climbing from Apprentice to Elder God has mainly proven to be a test of time, for as long as you are consistent in your skill, climbing is all but assured.

Conversely, it still remains true that reaching the top may be out of reach for casual players who do not have the time to commit to this one mode of online competitive play. Still, players are awarded up to the highest tier they reach even if they lose a rank. Players should therefore simply aim to do their best, knowing that they will still unlock a tier of rewards once they reach it.

  • Apprentice Rank: Unlock a skin for Jade “Born-Again Assassin”, 100,000 Koins, Gear – Kano – Basic Deadly
  • Kombatant Rank: 500 Soul Fragments, Gear – Kotal Kahn, Luminous Osh-Tekk Macana
  • Warrior Rank: 250 Hearts, Gear – Noob Saibot, Shadowcatcher
  • Champion Rank: Unlock a skin for Kung Lao “Bred for Kombat”, 100 Time Krystals, Gear – Johnny Cage – Six in the Chamber
  • Master Rank: 200 Time Krystals, Gear – D’Vorah, Devourateer
  • Grand Master Rank: 300 Time Krystals, Gear – Jacqui Briggs, Right Brat-Tat-Tats
  • Demi-God Rank: Unlock a skin for Lui Kang “Blessed to Be Chosen”, 500 Time Krystals, Gear – Cassie Cage, Top Gunna
  • God Rank: 1,000 Time Krystals, Gear – Sonya, Valkyrie
  • Elder God Rank: 2,000 Time Krystals, Gear – Cetrion, Calafia

As with previous seasons, rewards will be provided following the conclusion of this season and the start of the next, along with an icon and banner.

As mentioned earlier, these skins were part of an unconfirmed leak through datamining, and Season 3 is perhaps the blandest we have seen so far in terms of rewards and skins. Season 1 and 2 leaned hard into the theme of blood and time, however these four skins appear as little more than color variations of skins already available. Perhaps die-hard fans will appreciate them, but most will not likely be impressed this time around. With that said, Seasons 4 and 5 look outstanding, assuming the datamining is correct in regard to what we will be seeing.

Looking Forward

While it is nice to see constant Seasons added to online play, we are still hoping that the development team for Mortal Kombat 11 will at some point share some important stats about the previous seasons. It would be fantastic to know how many players reached the Elder God tier, and what percentage of players that amounts to. In addition, it would be nice to have a breakdown of which fighters are used at what ranks, because our perception of a meta based on fighting tournaments is likely to be drastically different from Kombat League.

For example, players who played during Seasons 1 and 2 likely remember seeing many, many Scorpions, at least in the lower ranks of play. Following the nerf to his Hell Portal ability, it would be great to know how much the fighter is still seeing play.

An important point brought up at the start of the first season remains still a point of discussion. Will these limited-time cosmetics ever be available again? As mentioned, we do not know what percentage of players reached the minimum tier of Demi God to get the rarest skin, and many players are likely wondering if they have lost their chance forever to obtain the cosmetic item. On the one hand, those top players must enjoy the reward of having a rare skin, but then again, need it be gated forever? When considering that a major component of reaching these top levels is time, it feels a bit unfair to never have a chance again to see these skins.

Best of luck to all who aim for the highest rank in this season of Kombat League!

Mortal Kombat 11 is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and the Nintendo Switch.
