The Joker has arrived in Mortal Kombat 11, and as usual, he comes along with an Easter egg too.

Mortal Kombat has always been chock full of Easter eggs, either for fans or just funny little references. With the arrival of The Joker, the latest character as part of the Mortal Kombat 11 Kombat Pack, we get something that’s one part Easter egg and one part music nerd reference.

We have Reddit user Cmaex to thank for finding this Easter egg in The Joker’s movelist. Those of you who purchased the Kombat Pack will already have access to The Joker and you might have noticed something weird when going through his moves. One of them appears to be just a collection of letters: CCDDEGEC. On the surface, this appears to be NetherRealm Studios just making fun of button-mashing fighting game players, but those with a little musical acumen will notice there’s something more going on here.

Those letters don’t correspond to buttons on a gamepad (although, come to think of it, just what exactly would E and G be on an Xbox or PS4 gamepad?). They’re musical notes. Play them out and you’ll get the opening bar to Pop Goes The Weasel, a favorite childhood nursery song and a common theme to a jack-in-the-box.

The Joker is obviously fond of jack-in-the-boxes for their randomness jump-scare factor. So much so that he’s even got a Fatality in Mortal Kombat 11 where he punches a hole in his opponent’s chest, places a jack-in-the-box inside the cavity, and then explodes the corpse’s head when it pops.

It’s all very in-theme.

So far, response to The Joker has been immensely positive over on the Mortal Kombat subreddit. Players used to The Joker’s PG-13 rating in the Injustice franchise are enjoying the fact that the Clown Prince of Crime can finally get his murder on thanks to Mortal Kombat 11’s M for mature rating.

Those with the MK11 Kombat Pack should already have access to The Joker, while the rest of us will have to wait until February 4th for him to go on sale.
