Earlier this week, ex-Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé spoke to an audience at Cornell University, his alma mater, as part of his new position as a "Leader in Residence" at the school. This event gave the public rare access to Reggie post-Nintendo, as he only just stepped down as president in April of this year. One particular member of the audience took full advantage of the intimate, non-corporate environment to ask Reggie about something that's been on the minds of Nintendo fans for a long time: Mother 3.

Mother 3 was well-received when it was released in Japan for the Game Boy Advance in 2006 as a sequel to Earthbound (which was known as Mother 2 in Japan). Naturally, the fans who enjoyed the idiosyncratic appeal of Earthbound have been wanting an official English-language release of Mother 3 ever since. Though a popular English fan translation has done the job for some, its accessibility has been lacking. Now, English-speaking fans know just how good the game is and how great it would be if it were officially released on a Nintendo console in the West.

During the talk, an image appeared behind Reggie that showed a pixelated sprite of him in a style reminiscent of Mother 3's graphics.

Reggie's response was simple and lighthearted, reminding us all of why he was so popular during his time at Nintendo. All of his answers are already out there, he started by saying before affirming his love for the Earthbound series. He then stated: "Luckily for me, this is a decision I'm no longer a part of."

His lecture also included talk of the Wii U's failure, his previous business experience working with Satoru Iwata, and a somewhat candid discussion of the Blizzard/China controversy. Taking a rare stance on the issue, he praised consumers' response to Blizzard's actions. This is Reggie now: happy to talk about Nintendo, but on his own time and at his own pace.
