Thanks to the sandbox nature of Mount & Blade: Warband it’s given rise to a number of interesting and in-depth mods. Some look to make minor tweaks to the game, while others convert things so thoroughly it feels like its own standalone game.

These mods in particular change and contort the base game so dramatically they require their own learning curve and provide unique gameplay experiences. Whether it’s wielding magic, riding bears, or commanding your own undead army into battle, here are some of the more insane mods out there.

10 Paradigm Worlds

Paradigm Worlds is a psychedelic experience that throws realism out the window for a wild and fascinating experience. The world is in constant flux as factions rise and fall, plagues devastate the populations, rebellions lead to overthrows, and more.

Boasting over 30 factions ranging from sci-fi to fantasy themes, there are 2,500 different troops to employ and struggle against. The player can even play across different eras of time. This thing is nuts and it takes many playthroughs to fully appreciate everything that can be experienced.

9 Phantasy 2018

Phantasy 2018 is a rebuild of the very popular Phantasy Calradia. The mod takes the concept and runs with it, adding different races for the player to become, 13 factions, magic, and a wealth of diplomacy.

While being a particular race has its advantages, it does come with drawbacks. Most notably certain factions are locked off from joining and will even respond with hostility when encountered. While your army can be a diverse and motley bunch, this will draw the wrong kind of attention.

8 Star Wars Conquest

Whenever a game is created it’s only a matter of time before modders come along and give it a bit of Star Wars flair. Star Wars Conquest on the other hand goes much further than merely adding lightsabers.

It’s a top-down rebuild with locations, troops, weapons, and of course, lightsabers. Players can form armies of stormtroopers to march down on opponents on worlds like Tatooine and Coruscant. It’s not without its bugs, but this is by far the most polished and favored Star Wars mod for the game right now.

7 A Clash Of Kings

A Clash Of Kings takes the world of A Song Of Ice And Fire and blends it into Warband. Players can experience the locations of Westeros and fight alongside the familiar factions of that world.

From the taverns to the frozen wilds the game looks and feels like George R. R. Martin’s creation. The modder has also been adding and enhancing content at a pace that mirrors the books. Needless to say, fans are excited for the wildlings.

6 Rise Of The Undead

Rise Of The Undead is a crazy and wild ride down the path of evil. Players are set into the role of one of the dark lords seeking to control and dominate the world in unique ways. With a legion of the undead, players can set about conquering their foes and adding their bodies to the growing horde.

There is a lot of reading involved as the mod includes a detailed story and lots of information gets thrown at the player at times. But this only seems fitting for such a richly detailed world that thrusts the player to the forefront of the conflict.

5 Suvarnabhumi Mahayth

Suvarnabhumi Mahayth is a mod that’s as insane as it sounds. The game takes place in 16th century Asia and gives players twelve factions to choose from. The look, feel, and scope of the game are all historically sound with more Asian aesthetics, units, armor, weapons, and locales.

This thing is so well made and thought out that it feels like an expansion that fits in with Viking Conquest and Napoleanic Wars. For players looking for the Asian expansion to Warband, this mod fits the bill.

4 Persino

Persino is a wild mod that adds a lot of interesting features. It’s a fantasy overhaul that adds a number of fantasy races, factions, and weapons for the player to enjoy. There are also more complex features like the ability to borrow money from banks to buy land and start agricultural efforts for profit.

But really, what draws players to this mod are the mounts. Players can hop onto the backs of camels, wolves, tigers, elephants, bears, and even wyverns. On top of all this, it has a much more modern feel that really makes this feel like a sequel rather than a mod.

3 Warsword Conquest

Warsword Conquest is a mod that introduces the world of Warhammer to Warband. It may not be a total conversion like the others, as it’s still a work in progress. But players can choose their race, join one of the many factions, and go to war in typical Warhammer fashion.

It’s even been set up to have different races immune to different magical effects. For instance, the Undead are immune to Screaming Skulls. This introduces a unique bit of strategy as players suss out the strengths and weaknesses of their opponents.

2 The Last Days Of The Third Age

This mod converts the world of Warband to another familiar fantasy world. The Last Days Of The Third Age takes players into the world of Middle-earth. The detailed and intricate areas are definitely among the biggest draws here. Players can clash with enemies in the forests of Rivendell, fight in the halls of Moria, and other iconic locales.

This one allows players to become a human fighting for Rohan, an elven warrior, or even an orc fighting for Mordor. It's an absolute must-play for diehard fans of The Lord Of The Rings.

1 Prophesy Of Pendor

Of course, Prophesy of Pendor had to make the list. This is hands down the most recommended mod from the highly dedicated fan base. This is a full fantasy conversion that makes Warband feel like an entirely different game.

The economy has been enhanced, there are events to encounter, more goals to conquer, a variety of factions to join, and various Knighthood Orders. There’s a reason this mod is so strongly recommended by fans year after year.
