Originally created by puppeteer Jim Henson, The Muppets have been a source of joy for many people of all ages for over six decades. With movies, television shows, holiday specials, and toys, not to mention guest appearances on talk shows, award shows, and even in games like Overcooked!, most viewers of entertainment have probably seen them around somewhere.

As with many other ongoing franchises, there are plenty of Muppet mobile games, with some directly tied to specific movies or shows. However, there are also several older and less well-known or accessible Muppet video games, from a catalog that dates back to 1983 and spans several console generations.

10 Pigs in Space, Atari 2600: A Parody-Heavy Console Debut

1983's Pigs in Space for the Atari 2600 was the first console game based on The Muppets to ever be released. Based on the Muppet Show sketch of the same name, Pigs in Space features three different minigames based on other popular titles, each starring a different member of the USS Swinetrek's crew.

The featured games are Chicken Invaders, inspired by beloved classic Space Invaders, the Frogger-esque Pastaroids, where flying pasta and meatballs take the place of cars and trucks, and the Vanguard-parodying shoot-em-up game Escape from Planet of the Gonzoids, which are all immediately available to play.

9 Jim Henson's Muppet Adventure: Chaos At The Carnival, NES: The Muppets Get Chaotic on Nintendo

Jim Henson's Muppet Adventure: Chaos At the Carnival marks the franchise's debut on a Nintendo console in 1990 (although it was also released for Apple II, Commodore 64, and DOS just a year prior). Each version also has some notable changes including visual differences, gameplay differences, and removed minigames.

In Chaos At The Carnival, Kermit, Fozzie, Gonzo, and Animal must save Miss Piggy from the clutches of Dr. Grump by taking on the four rides of Grump's carnival, including River Ride, Car Course, Space Ride, and Amazing Maze, before they can face off against Dr. Grump and his Grumpasaurus.

8 Jim Henson's Muppets, Game Boy Color: A Time-Traveling 2D Platformer

This 2D platformer released in 1999 for the Game Boy Color. It features Kermit and Animal as playable characters who need to save their friends from being stuck in different time periods after a time machine malfunction.

Each time period has three levels to select from in any order, and only after those have been completed can players face the boss of the section and save the Muppet trapped there. Kermit and Animal also each have their own unique attacks they can use to defeat enemies and bosses.

7 Muppet RaceMania, PlayStation: A Zany Muppet Kart Racer

Released in October 2000 for the original PlayStation, Muppet RaceMania remains to this day the only official Muppet kart racer in existence. The usual collection of wacky weapons to take out the competition is still present, in the form of stars, but with two allowed at a time instead of just one. RaceMania also has an interesting boost system: pressing different buttons in the right sequence at the start of a race will give a speed boost, in addition to collecting fruit (and veggies) in a similar manner to the much beloved Crash Team Racing.

Featuring 25 different Muppet characters and 34 courses in total, including four different course types, RaceMania has an impressive amount of content for a standard kart racer.

6 Muppet Monster Adventure, PlayStation: A Haunting 3D Platformer

After being around for over 60 years, the Muppets are no stranger to holiday-themed outings, and ever-popular Halloween titles are no exception for them. From old episodes of The Muppet Show to the more recent Muppets Haunted Mansion, the Muppets know how to get in the spirit of the season. In a similar vein to the latter, there's Muppet Monster Adventure, a 3D platformer released for the original PlayStation in 2000. Muppet Monster Adventure stars Kermit's nephew Robin, who sets to save Kermit and co. after they're turned into Muppet versions of classic horror monsters by Dr. Bunsen Honeydews' evil uncle.

Muppet Monster Adventure also features work from composer Michael Giacchino, whose credits (per IMDb) include Pixar movies Up and The Incredibles, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and the Spider-Man MCU trilogy.

5 Spy Muppets: License to Croak, Game Boy Advance And PC: Frog, Kermit the Frog

This spy thriller parody game stars Kermit, as an agent of M.U.P.P.E.T. who must defeat several different villains and save the day. This is another Muppet title in which the story revolves around a series of minigames and the villains to face can be selected in any order.

The same minigames are played for each villain section at varying difficulty levels. They include vehicle repair, vehicle chases, snowball fights, and boss fights, with each level that uses the same minigame having only visual differences.

4 Muppet Pinball Mayhem, Game Boy Advance: Basic Muppet-themed Pinball

A virtual Muppet pinball game seems like something that would have been made a long time ago and would have had several different iterations. Surprisingly, the only one in existence is 2002's Muppet Pinball Mayhem for the Game Boy Advance. There are four different pinball tables, based on Gonzo, Kermit, Miss Piggy, and Animal, respectively, with each also having a different theme.

While it does contain familiar audio clips from The Muppet Show and the theme on the starting screen, as well as a four-player competitive mode, there's not much else to say about Muppet Pinball Mayhem.

3 The Muppets: On With The Show!, Game Boy Advance And PC: More Minigames for Muppet Show Fans

The Muppets' third Game Boy Advance title has the Muppets trying to make a new episode of The Muppet Show. Just like some of the previously mentioned games, this is yet another selection of minigames, but the notable difference this time is that most of them are based on different sketches from The Muppet Show.

This includes Electric Mayhem Band, Muppet Labs, Pigs in Space, and The Swedish Chef Cooking Hour, among others. Additionally, On With The Show! has a story mode in which minigames have to be completed in succession, as well as an activity mode where all minigames are available to play.

2 Muppets Party Cruise, PlayStation 2 And GameCube: Muppet Mario Party

By 2003, the majority of games based on the Muppets were collections of minigames, so it was only a matter of time until they had a title akin to the brilliant Mario Party series to their name. Muppets Party Cruise takes place on a cruise ship and features six playable characters, including Animal, Fozzie, Gonzo, Kermit, Miss Piggy, and Pepe the King Prawn, plus several different boards.

To complete each board, one player must collect the highest number of party favors by winning different minigames. More minigames and boards can also be unlocked by spending the collected party favors.

1 The Muppets Movie Adventures, PlayStation Vita: The Muppets Take Over The Movies

Split image Muppets Movie Adventures Cover for PS Vita featuring cast and Kermit pirate level gameplay

The most recent console release based on The Muppets, this 2014 PS Vita release sees the Muppets platforming their way through different film genres while taking out enemies and solving puzzles using the PS Vita's touchscreen. Playable characters once again include Animal, Gonzo, Kermit, and Miss Piggy, but Fozzie is notably missing after being playable in several past titles.

Since Movie Adventures was made after Disney acquired the Muppets, it's surprising that the levels in Movie Adventures don't seem to be based on other Disney properties (some such titles have been fantastic). Still, maybe Muppets Haunted Mansion is a preview of what's yet to come.
