Mutant Year Zero is receiving a new DLC expansion titled “Seed of Evil” to coincide with the launch of the game on the Nintendo Switch on July 30. Hot on the heels of the initial “Road to Eden” story line, characters Bormin, Dux, and Farrow are being joined by another anthropomorphic ally named Big Khan, a moose who delights in using massive flames to destroy his enemies.

This will come in handy as the central theme of the story focuses on a new type of enemy straight out of Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer, where some mysterious force of nature is replacing friends and enemies with copies made of plant tissue. The “Pod ghouls” as they are called in the trailer seem to be the main adversary in the new DLC, and so the fire-themed abilities of Big Khan will fit perfectly.

Styled after X-COM series mechanics, the game will continue to offer high-quality voice acting and engaging combat through synergistic abilities that can be chosen by the player. There is still no option to create a custom mutant, which has been a repeated request in forums. It would be an ideal addition to a future DLC pack.

While the trailer looks fantastic, there is always room for improvement when launching new DLC. One area that should be addressed, though not necessarily “fixed,” deals with accuracy. A common complaint among players during the early stages of the game’s release focused on how punishing the accuracy sometimes felt. Other players meanwhile do not see this as something that needs correcting, as it adds to the risk assessment of the turn-based action.

Perhaps the idea could be revisited, or characters could be given perks to increase accuracy at the possible expense of raw firepower. There are many ways that this could be explored, though it is difficult to satisfy everyone.

Another point of contention among players is that the length of the entire game is on the short side, with most stating that it took 8-10 hours to complete the story. This is a tough point to handle, as today many games are built with the idea of long-term replayability that it almost becomes the standard.

Games like Diablo 3, Mordhau, and the surprise DLC expansion to Titan Quest, are all different types of games but have modes in them that are either “endless hordes” attacking, challenging the player to survive, or to push towards a scaling enemy that eventually will overwhelm the player.

With that in mind, not everyone needs infinite replayability to enjoy the game, and Mutant Year Zero is an enjoyable experience in itself. The DLC will be a welcome addition, hopefully with more coming later on.

The expansion will also be releasing on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 alongside the Nintendo Switch on July 30th.
