The announcement that Netflix's Narcos was getting a video game adaptation was initially met with confusion by many. Regardless, the adaptation will be releasing in late November of this year.

Developed by Kuju Entertainment, the game has you play as either the cartel or as the DEA in the turn-based Narcos: Rise of the Cartels. Characters from the popular show like Murphy and Peña make appearances in the game as well.

Pablo Escobar, one of the show's focal characters, makes an appearance in the game as well. A trailer for the game can be seen below.

The trailer details various gameplay elements, including its "rapid turn-based gameplay" and taking a third-person perspective "at critical moments," which is branded as one of the game's more differentiating components.

Although the game's September trailer didn't look all too promising, the latest trailer is trying to appeal to fans of the show while also attempting to entice fans of turn-based games with a unique experience.

Still, while it's respectable to try and replicate the quality and intensity of the show in a video game format, many might find it to fall flat on several counts. First, it could be interpreted that Narcos: Rise of the Cartels is sort of glorifying real-life villain Pablo Escobar. While this may not strictly be the case, developing a game centered around an evil cartel leader doesn't provide the best look, even if it might just simply be a video game adaptation of the hit Netflix show.

On a more technical level regarding design, it's interesting that Narcos: Rise of the Cartels would take a turn-based route, as opposed to a generic run 'n' gun or third-person shooter route. Many licensed games of the past generally seemed uninspired, so sticking to the turn-based genre is an interesting choice.

However, from what the trailers have shown, the visuals don't look entirely impressive and are more reminiscent of something that would have come from the previous console generation.

In either case, fans of the show and all other audiences can expect Narcos: Rise of the Cartels to release November 19th on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
