Every year for the last seven years, The Last of Us fans have marked September 26 as "Outbreak Day." The event is meant to celebrate the game's community while also commemorating the date in which the apocalyptic outbreak begins in The Last of Us' story. Now, after 2020's COVID-19 outbreak, Naughty Dog has officially changed the celebration to "The Last of Us Day."

It's hard to blame the developer, who posted a tweet on Tuesday announcing the decision, explaining that it didn't feel right continuing the celebration under the same banner. The company went on to include that the day is meant more so to show appreciation for the community rather than to simply recognize the game's lore.

Towards the end of the tweet, Naughty Dog also hinted that an announcement would be made this Saturday, now known as The Last of Us Day. It's unclear what exactly that announcement might include, but our best guess is that it could be a release date for The Last of Us 2 on the PS5. Here's hoping!

If that's not the case, it is still very likely that the highly popular second game will make its way onto the PS5 at some point in the same fashion that the original transitioned from the PS3 to the PS4. In the meantime, you can look forward to The Last of Us Day and some sort of announcement from Naughty Dog this Saturday, September 26.
