A player for the Miami Heat Check esports team has been disqualified due to gambling charges. According to the official announcement, Basil "24K Dropoff" Rose was "providing inside information" to someone he knew who was betting on the games. It's unclear if 24K was sharing in the winnings or not.

Notably, 24K wasn't found guilty of fixing games or betting on games himself, which clears him of any potential criminal charges. Still, there isn't an official way to bet on the NBA 2K League so anyone who is placing bets at all is already operating in a legal gray area at best.

Extra strange in this case is NBA 2k20 has already been criticized and scrutinized for its predatory monetization mechanics, where players can play actual casino games with real money for in-game rewards. The game is also facing extra scrutiny as countries pass laws regulating or outright banning loot box mechanics in videogames.

Esports gambling isn't a new phenomenon, and there are many websites where you can do so legally, including major sportsbook sites. In this case, however, there isn't a clear legal way to bet on the NBA 2k League. It's not a great look for the NBA, who've been heavily involved in financing the NBA 2k League.

The league is relatively new, having been founded two years ago, so they seem to be setting a strong precedent on breaking the league's rules. The NBA 2K League is a joint venture between 2K and the NBA, with each team backed by an actual NBA team. 24K, a two-year vet, was the power forward for Heat Check gaming. He was a third-round draft pick.

"Heat Check Gaming believes in the spirit and integrity of competition," the team said in a statement. "We stand behind the league and its ruling."

24K's page has been deleted on the NBA 2k League website, and the wording of the statement makes it clear the ban is permanent.

The expansion draft for the 2020 season takes place on September 26, and 24K was left unprotected. The new team, the Hornets Venom GT will be eligible to play in the 2020 season.

In the 2019 season, Heat Check Gaming finished 17 out of 21 teams with a losing record of 6-10. However, the prior year they made it all the way to the final round of the playoffs, where they were swept by Knicks Gaming.
