NBA 2K fans are hopping mad over a change in NBA 2K21. Released on September 4, the game introduced a new targeting and timing system.

Players are complaining that the new system makes it hard to aim and shoot. NBA 2K includes the Pro Stick, which allows gamers to control players on the court. It also enables players to perform post and dribble moves to get past defenders as well as to shoot.

With the new targeting and timing system, players must compensate for the aim of their shot as they’re trying to time it, making it difficult for even seasoned NBA vets to effectively control their shots. One person said the changes had people “scared to shoot threes,” while a streamer said he’d been getting the “Ben Simmons treatment.”

Even this year’s cover athlete, Portland Trail Blazers star point guard Damian Lillard is reportedly struggling with the new system. In response, Visual Concepts, NBA 2K21’s developer, provided a hotfix this weekend that applies to lower difficulty levels but doesn’t change the system in multiplayer modes. Since its release, the game has received more than 2,000 negative reviews on Steam.

The new game has also suffered as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has impacted the actual NBA season, making it impossible to deliver the roster update a new version usually comes with. According to the developers, the NBA 2K21 roster update with new player ratings that reflect the 2020-21 season won’t be available until the next-gen version of the game is released.

On Steam, some have complained about the new game's shooting system, while others criticized the new game for being more or less the same as it has been for the last few years. Disappointed players have also requested refunds after shelling out $79 for the game on PS4 and Xbox One or $89 on PC.

NBA 2K21 is currently out for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, and will be out for the PS5 and Xbox Series X when those consoles launch.
